Rio Ferdinand thinks Man Utd should dodge Benjamin Sesko and sign Brighton star instead

Daily Mirror25-07-2025
Manchester United have been told to avoid a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko by club legend Rio Ferdinand, who has suggested alternative targets
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has advised the club to avoid RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko in their quest for a new striker. The Red Devils have already secured the services of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer to bolster their attack.

Last season, Ruben Amorim's team lacked a reliable goalscorer, with Amad and Bruno Fernandes leading the scoring charts with a mere eight league goals each. United have been linked with a move for Sesko as the club attempt to improve their striking options.

The 22-year-old, who has also been on Arsenal's radar, scored 21 goals across all competitions last term. Yet, Ferdinand has warned United that they need a more experienced forward than Sesko.

"I think you've got to look at the here and now at the moment with Man United. That's what I said about a number nine," Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. "I'm not really doubting [Sesko] as a player. I'm saying Man United need experience at the top of the pitch.
"They've got Hojlund, they've got Zirkzee, they've got Chido. Young, inexperienced players. They need someone to look at and go, 'That's how you play as a number nine.' That's how you do it. When you're going to buy somebody who hasn't got as much experience as I'd like, I think that's another risk. Is it worth taking with inexperienced players at this level?".
Ferdinand has hinted that Ollie Watkins, who is on United's radar, could be the perfect fit due to the Aston Villa striker's Premier League pedigree. While Ferdinand has emphasised the need for a new striker, the former defender confessed he'd be willing for United to overlook a forward in favour of splashing out on Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.

"If I don't get a striker, I'd go midfield. There's only one name I'm thinking about, I've got to be honest, who I think fits the bill for what we need," Ferdinand explained. "An Amorim-type player as well. Physically great, can drive with the ball, can take it in all areas, very good tactically, great energy, great legs, Premier League experience, centre midfield. Baleba.
"That's who I go and get. That's my man. That's the one I go and get. I go and break the bank. So if I got the money for the four players that are surplus to requirements now, would I get a number nine or would I get Baleba?

"Would I get a number nine I'm not sure about, who's a bit young, inexperienced, or would I get Baleba with Premier League experience and know what he can do here? I'm going Baleba, sorry.
"I'm going to go with Baleba. I think he'll have a huge impact on this squad, on this team. You free up a few people in that midfield area as well to have a little less responsibility defensively because I think he's all-action. He can do it all."
Baleba was signed by Brighton from Lille for approximately £26million (€30m) in 2023. The young midfielder, aged 21, made 34 appearances in the league for the Seagulls last season.
Meanwhile, United's current striking options, consisting of Rasmus Hojlund, Josha Zikzee and highly-rated prospect Chido Obi, managed to score a total of seven league goals last season. United are hoping to boost their transfer budget through the potential sales of Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia, who have all been omitted from the club's US pre-season tour.

Benjamin Sesko's agent's clear message to Man Utd as enormous transfer offer made

Benjamin Sesko has been linked with a move to Manchester United, and the striker's agent has already outlined the key criteria that he and his client will look for when deciding on his future Benjamin Sesko's agent, Elvis Basanovic, claims the 22-year-old wants a "special project with a special coach" as he targets a potential move to the Premier League. This news comes as Newcastle United table a huge £65.5million bid for the RB Leipzig striker, amidst the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer drama. ‌ Manchester United are also in the race to sign the towering centre-forward, with Ruben Amorim keen to get a No.9 in the door to front his attacking line. United are progressing with a deal to sign the Slovenian international after picking him as their preferred target over Ollie Watkins, but Newcastle could put a stop to this with their bid. ‌ Sesko has not commented on the prospect of a switch to the Premier League previously, meaning he has not given any clues or indications. Given this, it could all come down to who can provide the striker with the most attractive overall package, and that doesn't simply mean financially. ‌ Basanovic discussed the possibility of Sesko making a move to England earlier this summer, stating that the striker will be looking for a range of things before deciding where to play. The agent, who met former United football director John Murtough back in 2022 to talk about a potential move to Old Trafford, said: "It's not correct to speak about the names of clubs that are interested in Sesko, but maybe it is right to clarify a few things. "Let me tell you: Sesko is not competing with anyone. It's him vs him every day. We have a clear plan for the future and media speculation doesn't affect us. His numbers at his age are comparable to some strikers with already great careers. "That confirms my words. He will move from RB Leipzig only when we recognise a special club. A special project with a special coach." United are currently working on 'Project 150', an ambitious scheme launched last year with the target of clinching the Premier League crown again by 2028 for their 150th anniversary. Speaking about the initiative in June, United chief executive Omar Berrada said: "It's establishing a series of targets within a timeframe so we can focus our efforts and energy on that goal. Can the team win the Premier League title by 2028? Of course. ‌ "We've just finished 15th and it seems an impossible task. But why not aim for it? Why not do everything in our power?" However, Eddie Howe is keen to make an impression on Sesko it seems, as Newcastle's project focuses on making the club a permanent fixture in the top five of the league table. It remains to be seen where Sesko will decide to go - if he moves at all - but the transfer battle is looking likely to heat up between the north east and north west giants of the Premier League.

How does Ramsdale compare to Newcastle's goalkeepers?

When Nick Pope started against Italy at the San Siro in September 2022, he became the first Newcastle goalkeeper to win a senior England cap for 121 years later, the Magpies could now have another England international keeper on their Newcastle fans could be forgiven for any apprehension around potentially signing a goalkeeper that has suffered relegation with four different clubs. Aaron Ramsdale was in the Southampton side that went down with 12 points last term and he also dropped out of the Premier League with Sheffield United in 2020-21, Bournemouth in 2019-20 and even endured a League Two demotion while on loan at Chesterfield seven years 27-year-old conceded 66 goals and kept three top-flight clean sheets in a disastrous 2024-25 campaign for the Saints, with his numbers understandably below average because of playing behind such a porous experience cannot be questioned, however, and he has 183 Premier League appearances to his name - only 38 fewer than Premier League career profile is similar to Eddie Howe's back-up keeper Martin Dubravka - both are less accomplished shot-stoppers than Pope, but more accurate did well when called upon last term but he will turn 37 in January and the opportunity to sign a player almost 10 years younger with comparable ability could prove to be shrewd Ramsdale good business? Darwin Nunez next club odds slashed as team makes move for Liverpool striker

The bookmakers expect Darwin Nunez to make a summer move to Saudi Arabia, with Al Hilal making a move in their pursuit of the Liverpool striker. The Uruguayan is available for transfer as the Reds significantly revamp their forward line after winning the Premier League title. Hugo Ekitike has arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt and Florian Wirtz has been brought in from Bayer Leverkusen, while Liverpool continue to be linked with the likes of Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Real Madrid's Rodrygo. Luis Diaz has left for Bayern Munich and of course the club lost Diogo Jota in tragic circumstances due to his shocking death last month. Nunez has been linked with a move away from Anfield all summer after a disappointing season on a personal level, despite the team's success under Arne Slot. The 26-year-old scored just five Premier League goals in 30 appearances, netting seven times in 47 outings across all competitions. The Reds are happy to let him go, but want a significant return on the initial £64m they paid Benfica for him in 2022. Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have made a move, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that they have 'presented their project and plan to Darwin Nunez in recent days.' A deal is far from done, with negotiations still to take place between the clubs and the player. While a number of players have been tempted to the Saudi Pro League, plenty more have also decided they would prefer to continue their career in Europe, turning down the vast riches on offer in Saudi Arabia. 4/5 Any Saudi Arabian team3/1 AC Milan4/1 Liverpool9/1 Juventus 10/1 Newcastle Odds courtesy of bet365 Nunez may well have an option to make a big move within Europe, with AC Milan also interested in signing him this summer. Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Uruguayan is AC Milan's first choice as they look for a new striker this summer and they have held talks with him already. The Serie A side will not be able to compete with Al Hilal on a transfer fee or wages, but will hope to appeal to Nunez by offering a higher level of competition. There is yet to be a bid from any side, with Napoli and Juventus also linked with a move for him this summer but their interest seemingly fading. It was a difficult season for the striker under Slot, with the manager criticising his work rate in February after back-to-back performances that disappointed the Dutchman. More Trending 'I helped him by saying you can miss a chance,' Slot told a press conference in February after Nunez made substitute appearances against Wolves and Aston Villa, missing a glaring opportunity in the latter. 'I wasn't only hard on him. But for the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa. 'I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once, but twice was a bit too much. That's why I addressed it. 'If you miss a chance, you need to be fighting for the team. I'm not saying he didn't do that at all, but it wasn't the usual Darwin, the one that is loved by the fans. That is mainly because he always works so hard.'
