New Delhi: State-run BSNL is working on a plan to install 4,000 new mobile towers in Naxalite-affected areas of Chattisgarh, Minister of State for Telecom and Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said on Sunday.The minister shared the information during a three-day visit to in Chhattisgarh to review central government schemes, including Aspirational District programme, and projects under telecom and rural development ministries."The central government is working on a plan to install 4,000 new BSNL towers in the Naxalite-affected and remote areas of Chhattisgarh to strengthen digital communication. This information was shared by Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Telecommunications Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar in Raipur," the statement said.Pemmasani said the installation of these towers will be carried out in phases after obtaining necessary approvals from security forces and the forest department."BSNL is providing high-quality 4G services across the country, and with this expansion, we are realising the mission of delivering digital connectivity to the last village in the country," the minister said.He said development work in Naxalite-affected areas is being carried out in 'mission mode' and a strategy is being adopted to deliver services door-to-door in these regions."Schools in these regions are being digitised, enabling students to better prepare for competitive exams like JEE and NEET. In addition, special facilities are also being provided for differently-abled students, which is a sensitive and inclusive initiative," the minister said.Pemmasani chaired a high-level review meeting held in Raipur, in which senior officials from the Department of Rural Development, Department of Posts, Department of Telecommunications, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) participated.During the meeting, the minister expressed satisfaction over the fast and effective implementation of flagship schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G), and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the statement said.Pemmasani appreciated the role of self-help groups and said innovative initiatives like the 'Pink Auto' scheme are being implemented in Chhattisgarh to empower and make women self-reliant."SHGs are being linked with various schemes to provide them financial assistance, training, and marketing opportunities. This is helping women become self-reliant and increasing opportunities for self-employment," the minister said.

In the Rajya Sabha, both Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Trinamool Congress floor leader Derek O'Brien demanded a debate on SIR. O'Brien reminded deputy chairman Harivansh that there are two more weeks left in the ongoing monsoon session and a debate on SIR can be organized. Kharge sought Chair's assurance when the debate on SIR will start and reminded Harivansh that since the beginning of the session, the Opposition's efforts had been to debate SIR. Later, talking to HT, Kharge said, 'Our top issue now is SIR. We want a debate on SIR and will make a plan on how the issue can be highlighted.' Kharge also didn't rule out protests but indicated that any rally or Opposition march might not happen in the short term. Demanding a debate on SIR, Kharge also told HT, 'The EC has announced it would do SIR in other states too. Notification has been issued in some states. This is a clear plan to not allow a large section of voters to vote.' INDIA group– which has 24 parties in Parliament, had met on July 19 to strategize for the monsoon session of Parliament. During the meeting, Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and SIR were picked up by leaders as top issues. 'Now that the Operation Sindoor/ Pahalgam debate is over in Parliament, our focus will sharpen on SIR,' said an Opposition leader. O'Brien said, 'SIR is a huge issue for the Opposition.' Bihar deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha, who came to Parliament for work, reacted to the Opposition's protests over SIR. 'The SIR will ensure only genuine voters will cast their votes. Otherwise, they (Opposition) wants votes to be cast in the name of those who have died. The people of Bihar are happy. Only those who come from RJD and Congress cultures are facing problems. They are in panic and they have accepted defeat. So, they are looking for an excuse.'

Five rounds of India-US trade talks held so far: Centre
New Delhi: India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations were launched in March 2025, with five rounds held so far -the most recent from July 14-18 in Washington, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada told the Lok Sabha in a written reply on Tuesday. The two countries aim to negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector BTA by fall 2025. The US has imposed a 25% tariff on automobile imports and certain auto parts from all countries, including India. These tariffs took effect on April 3, 2025, for automobiles, and on May 3, 2025, for auto parts. "India has taken requisite steps to reserve all its rights consistent with the provisions of WTO Agreements," Prasada added. In a separate reply, the Lok Sabha was informed that the US has not yet imposed any additional tariffs specifically on BRICS countries. "While the US had announced a reciprocal tariff of 26% on certain Indian exports, including seafood, this has not been implemented. Currently, the US has imposed an additional 10% duty on seafood imports, regardless of country of origin - including those from India and Ecuador," Prasada said. He added that the government remains committed to supporting India's seafood sector through sustained diplomatic engagement and policy support.
