Kharge calls INDIA bloc meeting to discuss voter roll revision in House
New Delhi: Opposition's INDIA group will sharpen its focus on the Election Commission's Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls, will insist on a debate and might also make a comprehensive protest plan over the issue after Parliament finished discussing Operation Sindoor in both Houses. Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge speaks during the discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha. (ANI PHOTO) INDIA group has called a meeting of its floor leaders of 24 parties on Thursday to evolve a common strategy on the issue. Congress president and Rajya Sabha's Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge will chair the meeting. In the Rajya Sabha, both Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Trinamool Congress floor leader Derek O'Brien demanded a debate on SIR. O'Brien reminded deputy chairman Harivansh that there are two more weeks left in the ongoing monsoon session and a debate on SIR can be organized. Kharge sought Chair's assurance when the debate on SIR will start and reminded Harivansh that since the beginning of the session, the Opposition's efforts had been to debate SIR. Later, talking to HT, Kharge said, 'Our top issue now is SIR. We want a debate on SIR and will make a plan on how the issue can be highlighted.' Kharge also didn't rule out protests but indicated that any rally or Opposition march might not happen in the short term. Demanding a debate on SIR, Kharge also told HT, 'The EC has announced it would do SIR in other states too. Notification has been issued in some states. This is a clear plan to not allow a large section of voters to vote.' INDIA group– which has 24 parties in Parliament, had met on July 19 to strategize for the monsoon session of Parliament. During the meeting, Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and SIR were picked up by leaders as top issues. 'Now that the Operation Sindoor/ Pahalgam debate is over in Parliament, our focus will sharpen on SIR,' said an Opposition leader. O'Brien said, 'SIR is a huge issue for the Opposition.' Bihar deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha, who came to Parliament for work, reacted to the Opposition's protests over SIR. 'The SIR will ensure only genuine voters will cast their votes. Otherwise, they (Opposition) wants votes to be cast in the name of those who have died. The people of Bihar are happy. Only those who come from RJD and Congress cultures are facing problems. They are in panic and they have accepted defeat. So, they are looking for an excuse.'

Five rounds of India-US trade talks held so far: Centre
New Delhi: India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations were launched in March 2025, with five rounds held so far -the most recent from July 14-18 in Washington, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada told the Lok Sabha in a written reply on Tuesday. The two countries aim to negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector BTA by fall 2025. The US has imposed a 25% tariff on automobile imports and certain auto parts from all countries, including India. These tariffs took effect on April 3, 2025, for automobiles, and on May 3, 2025, for auto parts. "India has taken requisite steps to reserve all its rights consistent with the provisions of WTO Agreements," Prasada added. In a separate reply, the Lok Sabha was informed that the US has not yet imposed any additional tariffs specifically on BRICS countries. "While the US had announced a reciprocal tariff of 26% on certain Indian exports, including seafood, this has not been implemented. Currently, the US has imposed an additional 10% duty on seafood imports, regardless of country of origin - including those from India and Ecuador," Prasada said. He added that the government remains committed to supporting India's seafood sector through sustained diplomatic engagement and policy support.

ET Explainer: Why India-US trade talks hit a rocky road amid new US tariffs and penalties
India & the United States trade talks hit a wall with President Donald Trump announcing a 25% tariff on Indian goods from August 1, besides a penalty in lieu of the former's purchases from Russia. These steep tariffs roll out notwithstanding the earlier decision by the two countries that the first phase of the trade deal will be finalised by September 2025, targeting bilateral trade of $500 billion by 2030. A look at the contentious issues that have held up progress: Absence of assurance Explore courses from Top Institutes in Please select course: Select a Course Category MBA Product Management Finance Digital Marketing Data Science Degree PGDM Technology healthcare Design Thinking Operations Management Public Policy others CXO MCA Others Artificial Intelligence Data Science Project Management Management Leadership Data Analytics Cybersecurity Skills you'll gain: Financial Management Team Leadership & Collaboration Financial Reporting & Analysis Advocacy Strategies for Leadership Duration: 18 Months UMass Global Master of Business Administration (MBA) Starts on May 13, 2024 Get Details India wants the US to provide a water-tight deal with assurance that no additional tariff would be levied on its exports post the trade deal, which the US is not agreeable to. New Delhi wants clear proposals from the US in view of the current administration's unpredictable trade moves. Indian exports already face a baseline tariff of 10%, 50% on steel & aluminium, 25% on auto and auto components. Access in farm sector India has reservations about completely opening up its farm sector, which is largely subsistence, unlike America's, which receives large government subsidies. New Delhi's pacts with other countries have so far kept the dairy and farm sectors out. New Delhi also has strong reservations on allowing any market access to GM foods or even GM cattle feed. High tariffs Prez Trump has repeatedly flagged India's high tariffs, but New Delhi maintains that its average tariff on US goods is much lower than the bound rate at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), barring a select sensitive goods. India had, in its last budget, slashed the duties on a number of products, including motorcycles for the US. The Pakistan Factor Repeated statements by Trump that he brokered the Pakistan-India ceasefire have not helped the bilateral relationship, with New Delhi viewing it as a tilt towards Pakistan.
