Padres connected to Cleveland Guardians All-Star outfielder at trade deadline

Yahoo3 days ago
The San Diego Padres are in the market for outfield help at the trade deadline. An area of struggle all season, making a splash move for a plus outfield bat could help put the team over the top in the National League.
One name that has come up recently in connection with the Padres is Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan. Kwan is an elite contact hitter at the plate, and a gold glove-level fielder in the field.
ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan said that the Padres are considered a top fit for Kwan in the event that the Guardians trade him. While they aren't jumping off the wall to deal the two-time All-Star, the Guardians — who are limping to a 52-53 record so far this season — would be silly to not listen to offers.
'An All-Star the past two years and Gold Glove winner in all three of his previous big league seasons, Kwan is a do-everything left fielder with elite bat-to-ball skills and two years of club control after 2025,' they wrote. 'Cleveland doesn't want to deal him, but with a dearth of available bats, the Guardians at the very least will listen to see if teams are willing to blow them away with offers.'
On the season, Kwan is hitting .285 with 9 home runs and a .761 OPS. Acquiring Kwan would give the Padres a much-needed boost in the outfield, and would further deepen their lineup as they aim to make another deep postseason run in October.

Why These Padres Pitchers Could Be Traded After Mason Miller Trade

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Diego Padres made the first massive splash of deadline day with a reported blockbuster to land Athletics closer Mason Miller. San Diego sent MLB's No. 3 prospect in infielder Leodalis De Vries and three pitchers to the A's to acquire one of the game's most electric relievers. The Padres sit just three games out of the lead in the National League West, but they find themselves in a situation to both buy and sell at the deadline. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 28: Dylan Cease #84 of the San Diego Padres walks to the dugout during the third inning against the New York Mets at Petco Park on July 28, 2025 in San Diego, California. MoreThe Padres have a complicated financial situation that leaves general manager A.J. Preller needing to balance a payroll. That reality could force trades for Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease and reliever Robert Suárez. San Diego could realistically replenish some of the prospect capital from the Miller trade if they move Cease, a rental starter, and Suárez in the midst of a wildly beneficial seller's market for bullpen arms. The Padres continue a competitive window and made their best run in 2022 with a trip to the National League Championship Series. In a competitive league and another battle down the stretch with the Dodgers, San Diego has more work to do Thursday. More MLB: Padres Reportedly Get Mason Miller, J.P. Blue Jays acquire Cy Young winner Shane Bieber in trade with Guardians

The 2020 American League Cy Young winner is on the move. The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for pitching prospect Khal Stephen, the teams announced on Thursday. Bieber, 30, has not made a start this season as he has been recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent last season. In free agency this past offseason, Bieber signed a one-year deal with the Guardians, reportedly worth up to $10 million that included a $16 million player option in 2026. The two-time All-Star pitched in just two games last season before undergoing surgery. Bieber was shut down after his first rehab start when he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired elbow. However, things have gone smoothly since that initial setback, as he has made four rehab starts in July between the Rookie-League Arizona Complex, High-A Lake County and Double-A Akron. Bieber threw 57 pitches in his last rehab start and is on track to make his season debut sometime in August. Bieber had spent his entire seven-year career with the Guardians. The Blue Jays currently have five starting pitchers – Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Jose Berrios, Eric Lauer and Max Scherzer – but a team can never have enough pitching. If Bieber could return anywhere close to his Cy Young form, the Blue Jays would have added another ace to their rotation. He won the award in 2020 during the coronavirus-impacted season. The Blue Jays are 64-46 and hold a four-game lead over the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East. Stephen, 22, was the Blue Jays second-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State. Across three minor league levels this season, Stephen has thrived. Stephen has a 9-1 record with a 2.06 in 17 starts and 91.2 innings this season. The Guardians are 54-54, but they are nine games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League Central. They are rumored to also trade other key players on their roster before the trade deadline.
