The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, has officially begun as the crescent moon marking the start of Muharram 1447 was sighted in
Saudi Arabia
on the evening of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, after Maghrib prayers.
This signifies that the previous month, Dhul Hijjah, (May 28, 2025 to June 25, 2025 in the Gregorian calendar) concluded with 29 days this year.
Following the moon sighting, the UAE has announced a one-day public holiday on Friday, June 27, for both the public and private sectors, allowing residents to observe the sacred occasion. The announcement aligns with Islamic traditions and is consistent with regional lunar calendar observances.
Understanding Hijri New Year: A Spiritual Milestone
The Islamic or Hijri New Year commemorates a foundational moment in Islamic history, the Hijrah (migration) of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in the year 622 CE. This event not only marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar, but also symbolizes the emergence of a united Muslim community and the early formation of Islamic society and law.
While the occasion does not involve festive celebrations on the scale of Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha, it remains a significant spiritual and cultural event.

The day encourages personal reflection, increased prayer, and religious contemplation, especially in the wake of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that concludes days prior, in Dhul Hijjah.
Muharram
: A Sacred Month of Peace and Reflection
The month of Muharram is among the four sacred months in Islam during which warfare is forbidden, a directive rooted in Islamic scripture and tradition. This restriction elevates the month's spiritual status, making it a time for heightened devotion, charitable acts, and inner reflection.
The 1st of Muharram heralds not just a new calendar year, but also an invitation for Muslims worldwide to renew their spiritual goals and intentions. As such, many believers use this time to revisit their faith practices, set moral resolutions, and seek forgiveness.
More than 20 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Syria, officially recognize the Hijri New Year as a national holiday. This global observance reinforces the cultural and religious relevance of the occasion across diverse Muslim-majority nations.
Why the Date Changes Every Year
The Islamic calendar, known as the Hijri calendar, is lunar-based, meaning it follows the phases of the moon rather than the solar cycle. Each lunar month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, which causes Islamic dates, including Ramadan, Eid Al Fitr, and Eid Al Adha, to shift approximately 10 to 12 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar.
As a result, the Islamic New Year does not fall on a fixed Gregorian date annually. For 2025, the crescent moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on June 25, marking the start of Muharram 1447.
In Summary
The Islamic New Year (Hijri New Year) began on June 25, 2025, as the crescent moon of Muharram 1447 was sighted in Saudi Arabia.
The UAE will observe a public holiday on Friday, June 27, for both public and private sectors.
The Hijri calendar starts from 622 CE, the year of Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijrah.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the four sacred months during which warfare is prohibited, emphasizing peace, prayer, and reflection.
Over 20 nations, including the UAE, recognize this day as a national holiday.

Sustained demand, infra revamp drive Mumbai property market to best-ever H1

Mumbai, the country's largest and most expensive property market, has recorded its strongest half-yearly performance ever led by sustained homebuyers' demand, lower home loan rates aided by the recent interest rate reduction, and the city's ongoing infrastructure and connectivity upgrade. The momentum has sustained despite steady growth in property prices and hike in ready reckoner (RR) rates from the beginning of the new financial year. The country's financial capital registered over 75,933 property deals in the first half of 2025, up 5% year-on-year, with the state exchequer fetching Rs 6,727 crore in stamp duty, a 15% rise and the strongest half-yearly performance on both counts, showed data from the Inspector General of Registration (IGR) and Controller of Stamps, Maharashtra. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mechanics Say: Fix That Windshield Crack Before It's Too Late Nexa 'Mumbai's residential market continues to reflect steady buyer confidence, as monthly registrations consistently stay above the 11,000-mark year-on-year. What is particularly encouraging is that this sustained demand has led to the city's strongest half-yearly performance. While we have seen some cooling in the mid-price segments, the appetite for larger homes and properties priced above Rs 5 crore remains strong, driving healthy revenue collections,' Shishir Baijal, CMD, Knight Frank India. In June, property registrations and stamp duty collection touched over 11,521 deals and Rs 1,021 crore, respectively. Live Events 'The sales pattern underscores a structural shift in demand, particularly for larger, high-value exclusive homes, as buyers continue to prioritise long-term lifestyle, community living and location choices. This trend is being reinforced by the government's ongoing efforts to upgrade infrastructure across the Mumbai region. These developments are not only enhancing connectivity but also reshaping buyer perceptions of emerging micro-markets,' said Parthh K Mehta, CMD, Paradigm Realty. According to experts, the recent reduction in home loan rates following the Reserve Bank of India's decision to lower Repo rate by 50 basis points, taking the cumulative reduction to 100 basis points in the last six months, is expected to keep the housing sales robust. The government is currently undertaking several infrastructure projects in the region Including the metro network expansion, the coastal road project, or the improvement of arterial connectors and expressways. Apartments up to 1,000 sq ft continued to dominate Mumbai's residential registrations in June, accounting for 84% of all transactions, broadly stable compared to 83% a year ago. Within this, the 500–1,000 sq ft segment remained the most popular, inching up from 44% to 45%. The share of units up to 500 sq ft held steady at 39%. This underscores the enduring preference for compact homes, even as a niche segment of buyers continues to explore more spacious living options. The western and central suburbs continued to anchor Mumbai's residential market, together accounting for 88% of total registrations in June, up slightly from 86% a year ago. The western suburbs alone contributed 57%, while the central suburbs accounted for 31% share.

Benchmark military spending at 3% of GDP, create non-lapsable modernisation fund: EY report

India should consider benchmarking military spending at 3 per cent of GDP, creating a non-lapsable defence modernisation fund , besides incentivising domestic manufacturing , an EY report said on Monday. The June edition of EY Economy Watch highlighted the need for a forward-looking defence budgeting strategy, saying this would build a more resilient and responsive defence infrastructure, and make India better equipped to address evolving geopolitical and technological challenges. "Over the years, India's military expenditure as a share of GDP has gradually declined - from close to 3 per cent in the early 2000s to just over 2 per cent today, whereas countries like the US and Russia continue to allocate significantly higher proportions," it said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? Sit Down Before You See What He Looks Like Now 33 Bridges Undo The EY report recommended "benchmarking defence allocations at 3 per cent of GDP, supplemented by the creation of a non-lapsable defence modernisation fund, and incentivising domestic manufacturing to unlock long-term economic growth multipliers". Going forward, there is a need to enhance the capital component of the defence budget , streamline procurement processes, and emphasise defence-related research and development. Live Events EY India Chief Policy Advisor, D K Srivastava , said, "Benchmarking defence spending at 3 per cent of GDP and operationalising a dedicated non-lapsable modernisation fund can provide the fiscal predictability required for investing in advanced technology, strengthening domestic defence manufacturing ecosystems, and driving innovation-led procurement." The 15th Finance Commission had proposed the creation of a Modernisation Fund for Defence and Internal Security (MFDIS), a non-lapsable corpus under the Public Account of India, to be financed through disinvestment proceeds, monetisation of surplus defence land, and voluntary contributions. "Although accepted in principle by the government, this fund is yet to be implemented. Reviving the proposal could provide consistent capital support, insulating critical defence investments from year-to-year fluctuations," the EY Economy Watch report said.
