A Owaisi's AIMIM Seeks Entry Into Bihar Grand Alliance, Writes To Lalu Yadav
The AIMIM in Bihar wants to join the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) to put a united front and consolidate minority votes in the Bihar election scheduled later this year, sources said.
Bihar's AIMIM chief and MLA Akhtarul Iman has written a letter to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Yadav, asking to include the Hyderabad-headquartered party in the Grand Alliance, sources said.
In the letter, Mr Iman said fighting the election together will ensure "secular votes" are not scattered and the Grand Alliance will have a much better chance at forming the next government.
Mr Iman, however, also added that not taking a quick decision on including AIMIM in the Grand Alliance will be considered a missed opportunity for the RJD.
"We have talked to RJD, Congress and other parties of the Grand Alliance to join them. A proposal has been sent. We have told them to make a decision soon," Mr Iman said.
"If they don't, they should not say they want us to be with them after the election," said the leader of the party led by Asaduddin Owaisi.
Seemanchal will be a tight contest for minority votes. Kishanganj has 67 per cent Muslim voters, Katihar 38 per cent, Araria 32 per cent, and Purnea 30 per cent.
RJD's Tejashwi Yadav participated in the Waqf Bachao-Samvidhan Bachao rally in Patna's Gandhi Maidan, where he declared he would "throw the Waqf Act into the dustbin" if voted to power.
National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders, including Giriraj Singh and Vijay Sinha, have criticised Tejashwi Yadav on the Waqf issue, calling it vote bank politics.
Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) national president and Bihar Minor Water Resources Minister Santosh Suman alleged the RJD-Congress alliance wants to polarise minority votes in Seemanchal.
"The purpose of Tejashwi Yadav's rant in Patna against the Waqf Amendment Act was not the protection of Waqf properties but appeasement politics. Congress-RJD can go to any level to polarise votes through communalism," Mr Suman said at a rally.
"Through communal polarisation, Congress-RJD are trying to get these votes while scaring the majority community," he added.

Muzaffarnagar (UP): Members of a Hindu group who asked a Muslim man to remove his pants to check his identity have doubled down on their act, claiming they have a right to check the religion of people working at shops and eateries along Kanwar Yatra routes in Uttar Pradesh. The row began after a Muslim man named Tajammul was found working under the assumed identity of "Gopal" at a roadside dhaba to protect himself from Hindu groups. The dhaba - which has since shut down due to protests - is off National Highway 58 in UP's Muzaffarnagar. Tajammul alleged members of the Hindu group pulled down his pants and thrashed him. NDTV spoke to the members of the Hindu group for an explanation. To a question why they took the law in their hands when it was the police's job to look into it, one of the vigilantes shot back, "Who has given you permission to ask such questions? If you were in our shoes you would have also asked for an Aadhaar card. These days media people show themselves as secular." When pointed out that the Constitution clearly says India is a secular nation, and whether they would either go by what they believe or what the Constitution states, he replied, " No, this country is not secular. This is the land of Sanatana dharma." He raised objections to Muslims working at what he called Hindu areas along the Kanwar Yatra route. "You tell me, who gave certificates to Muslims to put up boards in their shops showing gods and goddesses of Hindus, of Sanatana dharma?" he said. To a question why they are doing something which is the exclusive domain of the police, he said, "We can raise our voices. We have a right to ask." The controversy came a day after the UP government made it a must for all shops along the Kanwar Yatra route to have proper licences and clearly show the owner's original name. The Yogi Adityanath government has defended the move, with state minister Sanjay Nishad saying the accusation holds no weight. "The party whose nameplate the public has torn down and thrown away, that party's words hold no weight... Our government makes decisions for the welfare of the public, which is why the public stands with us," Mr Nishad said. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said every buyer has a right to know from whom they are buying. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also slammed the UP government over its directive. "There are many hotels near the Muzaffarnagar bypass. These hotels have been there for years. Didn't the Kanwar Yatra start here 10 years ago? The Kanwar Yatra used to start peacefully. There was no unrest there. Why is all this happening now? Now, they are asking for Aadhaar cards from hoteliers. They are making shopkeepers remove their pants," he said. The yatra is scheduled to start on July 10. In procession, Kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva.

Visakhapatnam Junction to have 14 platforms to cater to the growing demand
The redevelopment of Visakhapatnam Railway Station, which is among the top 20 stations in India in passenger revenue for the financial year 2023-24, has begun after much delay. Visakhapatnam Junction will have 14 platforms to cater to the growing demand. In fact, Visakhapatnam Junction was the highest revenue earner among all the railway stations in the Bhubaneswar-headquartered East Coast Railway (ECoR) during 2022-23 and 2021-22 financial years also, according to data obtained by Kanchumurthi Eswar of Duvvada under the RTI Act. It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for redevelopment of Visakhapatnam Railway Station, at an estimated cost of ₹456 crore, on November 12, 2022. The redeveloped station is designed to cater to the needs of 75,000 passengers a day. The work commenced in the first quarter of 2023 but was subsequently held up reportedly due to issues with the contractor. Notwithstanding the delay, there is enough reason for people of the city to cheer up. The redeveloped Visakhapatnam Junction will have six new platforms taking the total to 14. It may be recalled that a survey for construction of new platforms was conducted more than a decade ago to reduce the congestion at the station. There were demands for construction of four additional platforms ever since. The station redevelopment plan originally included provision for construction of two new platforms. A revised DPR submitted to make Visakhapatnam Junction as a terminal station with six additional platforms, major yard remodelling works to prevent criss-crossing of trains, leaving and entering Visakhapatnam Railway Station, is under consideration of the railways, according to sources. It is learnt that of the six new platforms, two would be terminal platforms for the operation of Vande Bharat Express trains, which do not require engine reversal. A coach maintenance depot would be established in Visakhapatnam for the maintenance of Vande Bharat express trains. 'The revised master plan for redevelopment of the entire station, including yard redevelopment, provision of new escalators and 12 m wide FOB have been submitted, and it is under consideration of the authorities concerned,' Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra told The Hindu. 'The delay in the redevelopment work of the station is because the old contractor approaching the court on the issue. We (railways) have won the case and the construction work would be hastened,' he added.
