Tarar seeks to defend convictions of PTI lawmakers
Tarar, speaking during a session held to honour the late opposition lawmaker Mian Muhammad Azhar of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who died last month, defended the recent sentences handed down to PTI-linked rioters, calling them 'fully justified' following trials that spanned 15 months.
The remarks angered lawmakers from PTI, who accused the minister of injecting politics into a session intended to honour Azhar, a veteran politician widely respected across party lines.
Tarar, for his part, remained tight-lipped in the face of the backlash.
'Make up your mind, Minister, but stop playing courtroom cheerleader,' retorted PTI stalwart Latif Khosa, accusing Tarar of turning a memorial session into a partisan stage.
Khosa slammed the minister for 'secretly' visiting Azhar's grieving son, Hammad Azhar, yet refusing to drop what PTI calls a politically motivated case against him.
'How long will politicians keep playing puppets for unelected powers,' he thundered, slamming pro-establishment antics that, according to him, poison the country's fragile democracy.
Despite the drama, tributes continued to pour in for the late Azhar, a rare unifying figure in the country's polarised politics.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, with a sombre tone, revealed he had stayed in regular contact with Azhar during his final 16 months.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, usually a PTI critic, called Azhar a 'man of principle' who never indulged in dirty politics even after parting ways with PML-N.
'He was the only PTI lawmaker who crossed the aisle to shake hands with us,' Asif added. 'That takes guts and grace.'
Former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf called Azhar 'a gentleman in a toxic game,' while MQM's Farooq Sattar praised his adherence to the now-rare 'golden rules of decent politics.'
In an emotional moment, PTI's Amir Dogar reminded the House of Azhar's resilience – taking his son's place in Parliament after Hammad Azhar was barred from the 2024 elections due to 9 May allegations.
But the real gut punch came when Dogar described how Azhar – a septuagenarian statesman – was manhandled by police outside Adiala Jail during a peaceful protest for Imran Khan.
'That image will haunt our democracy,' Dogar said, his voice cracking. 'A stain we may never wash off.'
Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the information minister should have refrained from raising the issue of convictions, emphasising that the moment called for moving beyond confrontational politics.
At the same time, he urged PTI lawmakers to reflect on the past, recalling how Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was not permitted to attend his mother's funeral during Imran Khan's tenure.
He also paid tribute to the late Mian Muhammad Azhar, noting his personal ties with the deceased.
PTI members like Sherhryar Afridi and Ali Muhammad Khan joined the chorus of praise, united in grief over a political elder who, regardless of party, was seen as a symbol of civility in an increasingly brutal arena.
PTI lawmakers attended the session and placed pictures of the party's recently disqualified MNAs – including opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, Abdul Latif, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Jamshed Dasti, Zartaj Gul, and Rai Hassan Nawaz – on their seats.

PTI carries out countrywide protest rallies amid Section 144 in twin cities
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is carrying out protest rallies across the country, amid imposition of Section 144 in twin cities and crackdown of law enforcement agencies on the political public gatherings. The Islamabad and Rawalpindi administrations have imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings and processions in the twin cities. The PTI on its social media platforms has said numerous of its workers, including PTI leader Usman Dar's mother Rehana Dar, were arrested in various parts of the country in a bid to stop them from staging rallies, as the former ruling party is marking the second anniversary of incarceration of PTI founding chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan today, with 'peaceful protests', demanding his release. A day ago, PTI Punjab released a 12-page white paper titled 'Detention of Former Prime Minister Imran Khan: Political Victimisation and Human Rights Abuses (August 2023-August 2025).' Addressing a presser along PTI senior leader Barrister Ali Zafar, Head of the Media Cell for PTI Punjab Shayan Bashir said his party has decided to organise peaceful protests to mark second anniversary of Imran's imprisonment. PTI no longer a political party: Azma 'We have always promoted peace, and our founder, Imran Khan, encourages us to remain peaceful. If Khan's family is not allowed to visit him, we will stage a major protest outside Adiala Jail and continue to protest daily after August 5,' he said. He asserted that some individuals wish to see PTI completely dissolved but it will not happen. Over the past four days, he reported that raids had been conducted on the homes of PTI workers, violating their privacy. 'In Lahore alone, over 200 raids took place in the last two days. The authorities are using brutal tactics, detaining individuals and demanding bribes for their release, and in some cases, asking them to sign affidavits,' he added. Zafar said each case against the PTI founder is based on false accusations. When he spoke with Khan, the former prime minister expressed his commitment to fighting for the rule of law and his faith in the judiciary to deliver justice, he said. Currently, the PTI leader stated, Khan is confined to a 10-foot room, and the authorities do not permit him to meet with his family freely. Recently, even his lawyers have been denied access, and cases have been filed against his wife to apply pressure on him, he maintained. The PTI's dossier outlines a series of issues including political persecution, judicial manipulation, electoral interference, and state-led repression. It claims that Imran Khan has faced over 186 politically motivated FIRs across the country since August 2023. According to the report, convictions in controversial cases, such as the Toshakhana reference, the cipher case, and the Al-Qadir Trust case, were delivered through closed-door trials that were characterised by procedural violations and media blackouts, in blatant defiance of Articles 10-A and 14 of the Constitution. From the party's perspective, the dossier emphasised violations of court orders, human rights abuses, electoral engineering, subversion of democracy, and suppression of peaceful protests. The white paper makes several demands, including the immediate release of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and all political prisoners who are jailed for peaceful expression or association. It also calls for the reversal of all politicied convictions and the initiation of fair retrials overseen by independent benches and international observers. Furthermore, the document demands the formation of an impartial judicial commission to investigate police brutality, forced disappearances, attacks on peaceful protesters, and custodial torture.

More than six MPAs have been arrested in Lahore. Deputy Opposition Leader Moin Qureshi has been detained. MPAs Farukh Javed Moon, Colonel Shoaib, Nadeem Sadiq Dogar, Khawaja Salahuddin, Aminullah Khan, and Iqbal Khattak have also been arrested. Furthermore, preparations for protests have also been completed in various constituencies across Lahore. According to PTI Lahore President Imtiaz Shaikh, the party will hold strong demonstrations in multiple areas of Lahore, and an attempt will be made to stage a central power show at one location. However, given the situation, an alternative plan has also been prepared. Meanwhile, the party claims that, to stop the protest, police have detained more than 300 workers from Lahore and are conducting raids on the homes of party leaders. On the other hand, in anticipation of a possible protest call by PTI, Rawalpindi Police have put in place extensive security measures, with over 4,000 officers deployed across the city, the City Police Officer (CPO) said Monday. Special arrangements have been made around Adiala Jail, including the deployment of Right Management Force units to strengthen control in sensitive areas. Section 144 has been imposed in Rawalpindi, and authorities have vowed to ensure its full enforcement. According to the CPO, law enforcement is monitoring the situation through Safe City cameras and other surveillance tools. Any violation of the law will prompt immediate action, he said, adding that no individual or group will be allowed to disturb public life. Police pickets and patrolling teams have been activated citywide as part of efforts to maintain law and order. The CPO reiterated that the rule of law and public peace will be upheld at all costs.
