JUNE 26 — My experience teaching Mathematics in two countries, Malaysia and China, has revealed an important reality: the way students master this subject is deeply influenced by the educational culture and assessment systems of each country.
In today's modern educational era, tools such as scientific calculators and artificial intelligence (AI) have become increasingly prevalent in the classroom. However, students' approaches to using these tools are still firmly rooted in the foundational values shaped by their respective systems.
In Malaysia, the use of scientific calculators is standard practice beginning at the upper secondary level. Students rely on calculators for a wide range of mathematical operations, and for some, they become an inseparable part of problem-solving. While calculators help speed up calculations and minimize errors, overreliance can sometimes lead to weaker mastery of basic computational skills and reduced understanding of core mathematical concepts.
This culture of calculator dependency is also reflected in Malaysia's national examination, the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). In SPM, calculators are permitted for Mathematics and Additional Mathematics papers. The structure of the exam often assumes that students have access to calculators, especially for questions involving trigonometry, logarithms, or statistical calculations. While this allows for efficiency, it may inadvertently discourage the development of mental calculation and manual problem-solving strategies.

By contrast, my experience teaching foundation students under the PASUM offshore program at Xi'an International University in China revealed a very different learning environment. Many students there had never used a calculator. Since they were preparing to pursue their undergraduate degrees at Universiti Malaya, I took the initiative to introduce calculator usage and made it a requirement in both lectures and assessments. Initially, they were unfamiliar and hesitant, but I could see their excitement when they first tried using the device.
Even so, most of them continued to prefer solving problems such as multiplication, square roots, and trigonometric expressions manually with remarkable confidence, speed, and precision. This comfort with manual computation stemmed from their early training and a system that actively reinforces such skills.
One of the main reasons for this is China's national university entrance exam, Gaokao. Known for its intensity and competitiveness, Gaokao strictly prohibits the use of calculators in the mathematics paper. This policy is intentional. It aims to assess a student's genuine computational skills, ensure fairness across all regions and backgrounds, and encourage deep mastery of mathematical principles without reliance on technology. As a result, Chinese students are trained from a young age to memorize formulas and solve problems manually. The outcome is a generation of students who possess strong fundamental skills and a high level of discipline when tackling complex problems using logical and structured steps.
Despite these systemic differences, global developments continue to impact both countries. Students in Malaysia and China are now increasingly turning to AI-powered apps such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Symbolab, and Photomath. These tools allow students to input or scan questions and receive complete answers, including solution steps, within seconds. While these technologies offer convenience and accessibility, I have observed a troubling trend: students are becoming increasingly dependent on AI-generated solutions without fully engaging with the problem-solving process.
To address this, I apply a simple yet effective approach in my classroom. Students are required to first attempt questions manually, using their own reasoning, before they are allowed to check or verify their answers using AI. This method trains students to think critically, assess their own solutions, and compare them thoughtfully with the output provided by AI tools. It also builds confidence in their conceptual understanding.
What I find most encouraging is how students respond when their answers differ from AI-generated ones. On several occasions, I have heard students say confidently, 'I think my answer is correct. The AI is wrong.' To me, this is a clear indicator of authentic learning. These students are not simply replicating solutions — they have internalized the logic, can explain their reasoning, and are unafraid to challenge the authority of a machine when they believe in their understanding.
I am not against the use of technology. On the contrary, I fully support the integration of AI as a learning tool, provided it is used wisely and with the right guidance. However, I believe that manual problem-solving and conceptual mastery must remain the foundation of Mathematics education. Technology should enhance students' learning but not replace their ability to think.
Calculators, SPM, Gaokao, and AI each represent tools, systems, and educational paradigms that shape students in different ways. What truly matters, however, is ensuring that students are able to understand, reason logically, and trust their own thinking. When a student can confidently say, 'AI is wrong, I know my answer is correct,' because they fully understand the concept, that is where the true success of a teacher lies.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is actively creating more space for young entrepreneurs to thrive, in line with Malaysia's role as Asean chair, said Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He said that through initiatives such as the Asean SME Academy and the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), the ministry is breaking down barriers so that these entrepreneurs can start, scale, and connect their ventures beyond borders. 'DEFA, the world's first regional digital economy treaty, is projected to grow Asean's digital economy to over US$2 trillion by 2030 and generate millions of jobs. These are not just statistics; they are doorways to your future,' he said in his closing keynote address at the Nusantara Youth Forum 2025 held in Putrajaya today. Tengku Zafrul said that as Malaysia opens doors for young entrepreneurs and innovators, it is important to mention how Malaysia's own long-term strategies align with these regional ambitions. 'Through the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), Malaysia is transforming our industrial landscape by focusing on high value-added sectors, advanced manufacturing, and future-oriented skills. 'NIMP's core mission is to create quality jobs and ensure our industries – especially in electrical and electronics (and) green tech – remain globally competitive, resilient, and sustainable,' he said. According to the minister, national frameworks such as NIMP are not just about Malaysia's progress. 'They also complement Asean initiatives like DEFA and the Asean SME Academy, creating a seamless ecosystem that supports youth, from upskilling and financing to market access, so you can truly take your ideas from the region to the world,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also gave recognition to arts and culture, saying that too often, the creative sector is wrongly treated as secondary to the 'main economy.' 'The truth is, culture and creativity are economic engines, identity builders and bridges between nations,' he said, adding that Asean's creative industries, from music to film, are gaining global attention. The MITI Minister said he cannot overstate the importance of entrepreneurship in driving both economic progress and social transformation. 'Today, the most exciting businesses in Malaysia, and indeed throughout Asean, are being founded, led, and grown by youths. 'Whether you are developing tech solutions, running sustainable farms, designing innovative products, or launching platforms for social impact, you show the world what is possible when ambition is united with purpose,' he added. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — DNA from six critically endangered and endangered fish species has been found in fish maw products sold in stores across Malaysia and Singapore, according to a new study released last week. Researchers identified DNA from the European eel and large yellow croaker — both listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) — in samples taken from shops in both countries, The Straits Times reported today. Eleven of those samples came from the European eel, despite the European Union banning its export in 2010. 'It's not that surprising that eel maw has been sold, because you can find the eels here,' National University of Singapore (NUS) Assistant Professor Benjamin Wainwright, one of the study's authors, was quoted as saying. 'But it's interesting that the European eel is still making it here, because that should have been banned a long time ago.' The most commonly identified species was the blackspotted croaker (Protonibea diacanthus), which accounted for 58 of the 480 samples tested. The blackspotted croaker is listed as near threatened on the IUCN Red List – meaning it is at risk of becoming endangered in the near future. Four other endangered species in the fish maw samples were listed as: the cassava croaker, American eel, fourfinger threadfin, and iridescent shark. The findings were published on June 24 in the journal Conservation Letters by Wainwright and Seah Ying Giat of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). Fish maw is made from the dried swim bladder of fish. It is considered a delicacy as well as a social status symbol for the rich that is believed to offer health benefits that is widely consumed across South-east Asia and East Asia. Between October and December 2023, the NUS-UMT researchers collected fish maw samples from Malaysian shops, followed by stores in Singapore from January to April 2024. A total of 39 different fish species were identified after the DNA extraction from 118 samples in Malaysia and 362 in Singapore. According to Wainwright, identifying species by sight is nearly impossible as the fish maw has been heavily processed. 'Fish maw has been processed, flattened, cleaned and washed. 'You can't determine what species the maw comes from without using genetic methods – so we have no idea of what species are involved in this trade in South-east Asia,' he was quoted as saying. Fresh fish maw is also served at some restaurants in Malaysia. — Picture by Ethan Lau He added that trade regulations are further complicated by broad commodity classifications. 'Commodity codes are meant to say, this is shark fin, this is shrimp, this is fish maw – but at the moment, all these products are lumped together and imported as dried fish goods.' Chester Gan, marine lead at Singapore's World Wide Fund for Nature urged consumers and companies to consider sustainability. 'Given that fish maw may originate from fisheries with little data, endangered species, or unsustainable fishing practices that harm vulnerable marine life, we urge both consumers and businesses to consider more sustainable alternatives,' he told The Straits Times. Gan also called on businesses to review their supply chains to ensure responsible sourcing. Wainwright said the best approach was to avoid fish maw altogether if the species, country of origin or sustainability could not be verified. 'The hope is, as more people become aware of the damage caused by unsustainable fishing, they may turn away from products of unknown origin and towards seafood from sustainable fisheries. 'Otherwise, when a species targeted for fish maw gets fished out, it's very likely we'll turn to another species and fish that one out, and then do the same for the next ones,' he added.

Spillover from animals or lab leak? WHO says Covid-19 origins still unknown as lack of data hampers four-year investigation

GENEVA, June 28 — All hypotheses on how the Covid-19 pandemic began remain open, the World Health Organization said yesterday, following an inconclusive four-year investigation that was hamstrung by crucial information being withheld. The global catastrophe killed an estimated 20 million people, according to the WHO, while shredding economies, crippling health systems and turning people's lives upside-down. The first cases were detected in Wuhan in China in late 2019, and understanding where the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid came from is key to preventing future pandemics. However, a lengthy investigation launched by the UN's health agency said that pending further data, the origin of Covid and how it first spread remains elusive. 'As things stand, all hypotheses must remain on the table, including zoonotic spillover and lab leak,' WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference, referring to the two main hypotheses as to how the pandemic began. Expert investigation An initial WHO-Chinese joint report in March 2021 concluded that the virus most likely jumped from bats to humans via an intermediate animal. It deemed a leak from Wuhan's virology laboratories — known for their research on coronaviruses — to be 'extremely unlikely'. However, that investigation faced harsh criticism for lacking transparency and access, and for not seriously evaluating the lab-leak theory. Tedros launched another investigation, setting up the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO), comprising 27 international experts, in July 2021. Their 78-page report was published on Friday. It said the weight of available evidence suggests a spillover from animals — either directly from bats, or through an intermediate host. However, it could not conclude with certainty where and when this happened, nor whether the Wuhan wet market was where the virus first spilled over into humans. That said, the market 'appears to be the location for amplification of infection in humans', leading to widespread transmission. 'Evidence for widespread infections or cases in any other countries prior to December 2019 is lacking,' it added. While spillover was the best supported theory on the evidence currently available, 'until further requests for information are met, or more scientific data becomes available, the origins of SARS-CoV-2 and how it entered the human population will remain inconclusive,' SAGO chair Marietjie Venter said at the press conference. Lab leak theories 'could not be investigated or excluded', she said, because much of the needed information had not been made available. The experts requested unpublished information from other countries, notably Germany and the United States, but without success, she said. Earlier this week, one SAGO member resigned and three others asked for their names to be removed from the report. 'Crucial question' 'Over the past five years, we have learned a lot about Covid-19 but there is one crucial question about the pandemic that we have not yet answered: how it started,' Tedros said. 'Despite our repeated requests, China hasn't provided hundreds of viral sequences from individuals with Covid-19 early in the pandemic, more detailed information on animals sold at markets in Wuhan, and information on work done and biosafety conditions at laboratories in Wuhan,' he said. He said WHO has requested access to intelligence reports by governments around the world on the origins of Covid-19. US President Donald Trump's administration has officially embraced the lab leak theory. Moral imperative Tedros said finding out how Covid-19 started was a moral imperative for those who lost their lives in the pandemic and to prevent further outbreaks. He said the virus was continuing to evolve, take lives and leave people suffering with post-Covid conditions, or so-called long Covid. Tedros said the WHO is appealing to countries with information about the origins of Covid-19 to share information. SAGO said it would continue to evaluate any new, sound scientific evidence and update its findings accordingly. — AFP
