The state welcomes the Raja festival every year as a mark of respect for womanhood, fertility, and the rhythms of Mother Earth. This time, the festival reflecting deep-rooted traditions and cultural pride, is observed between June 14 and 16.
President Murmu, who hails from Odisha, posted on X: "I am wishing my dear countrymen heartily on the occasion of Raja festival. On the arrival of rainy season, honouring Mother Earth this agrarian festival is observed by eating sweets, playing swings, kabaddi and betel and sweet drinks. This festival is celebrated for three days in Odisha. From this, we should take inspiration from walking in harmony with nature."
She also said, "On the occasion of Raja festival, I wish happiness and prosperity for the state and the countrymen."
The X handle of Governor Odisha said: "On the occasion of Krishivithik Gana Parv # Raja the Hon'ble Governor Shri @DrHariBabuK has extended his greetings and best wishes and wished that the eternal spirit of this festival may be felt by all. #RajaParba."
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who hails from Keonjhar district, where Raja is a major festival, also wished the people of the state.
"Greetings and best wishes to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Gana Parva, a unique tradition of honouring tradition, nature, motherhood and womanhood. May this festival bring joy and happiness to everyone's lives.#Raja #PahiliRaja," he said.
Former chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik also congratulated the people on the occasion and said: "Heartiest greetings to everyone on the occasion of Odisha's mass festival, Raja. May this unique tradition of paying homage to the land and mother fill everyone's lives with joy and happiness. #RajaParba."
The nomenclature of the festival 'Raja' is rooted in the Sanskrit word 'Rajaswala' . Raja marks a symbolic period when Mother Earth is believed to rest and rejuvenate, like women during their menstrual cycle, said Asit Mohanty, a researcher in Odia culture. He said that the festival also witness the beginning of cultivation works which comes coinciding with the onset of the monsoon month 'Asadha'.
During the festival, young girls and women rejoice by wearing new clothes, applying henna and alta, playing traditional games, enjoying swings called - 'Raja Doli', and eating festive foods, mostly handmade cakes. Special sweets like Poda Pitha, Arisha, Kakara, and others are prepared at houses and offered to guests, Mohanty said.
The festival unfolds in four phases. The first day of the festival is called - 'Pahili Raja' , middle day is 'Raja Sankranti' , first day of Asadha, celebrating seasonal transition and 'Basi Raja' , the last day of the festival.
At the end of the festival, the women in houses observe a ritual called 'Basumati Snana' when the mother earth is bathed after her menstruation period, Mohanty said.
He said the girls are exempt from household work, and no farming or digging is done, showing reverence to nature's fertility during the three-day Raja festival.
Raja festivals are held across the state including state capital of Bhubaneswar.

Naveen Patnaik Flags Omission of Odisha's Paika Rebellion From NCERT History Textbook
Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday expressed concern over the exclusion of the 1817 Paika Rebellion from the latest Class 8 history textbook released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Calling it a "watershed moment in Odisha's history," Patnaik said the move undermines the sacrifices of the Paikas, who revolted against British rule nearly four decades before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. "I had urged the Government of India several times to declare it as the first war of Independence. The omission of the epic rebellion from NCERT textbooks is a huge dishonour to our brave Paikas, 200 years after the rebellion," Patnaik said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He urged Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to ensure justice is done to the Paika Bidroha and to the people of Odisha. However, NCERT issued a clarification on Monday night, stating that the recently released Exploring Society: India and Beyond is the first in a two-volume Social Science textbook series for Class 8. The council confirmed that regional resistance movements, including the Paika Rebellion of Odisha and the Kuka Movement of Punjab, will be included in the second volume, which is currently in its final stages and expected to be released between September and October 2025. In a detailed press note dated July 16, 2025, NCERT said the new textbook has been developed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. It aims to offer students an integrated, multidisciplinary understanding of India's geography, economic life, governance, and history-covering the period from the 13th century to the mid-19th century. NCERT stated that the book was designed to avoid overloading students with information and instead focuses on fostering critical thinking. "All facts presented are based on well-known primary and secondary academic sources. A note titled 'History's Darker Period' has also been included on page 20 to help learners view the content in the right context," the council said.

Asim Munir wants himself as president, brother-in-law as PM: Ex-Pakistan army officer
Major (Retd) Adil Raja, a former Pakistani army officer, alleged that Army Chief General Asim Munir sought total control of the South Asian nation by orchestrating chaos read more A man carries a portrait of Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, during a rally to express solidarity with Pakistan's armed forces, in Islamabad. AFP Major (Retd) Adil Raja, a former Pakistani army officer turned whistleblower, has accused Pakistan's army chief, General Asim Munir, of undermining the country's democracy. Raja alleged that Munir, who earlier promoted himself to the rank of Field Marshal, seeks total control by orchestrating chaos. 'The plan is allegedly by the Army Chief, Asim Munir — putting his brother-in-law as PM, himself or another general as president — a Musharraf-style accountability push to claim they cleaned up Pakistan,' he claimed, referencing the former Pakistani president and army chief. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In an India Today interview, Raja accused Munir of orchestrating a 'strategic lawsuit against public participation' (SLAPP)—a defamation case filed in the UK by Brigadier Rashid Nasir, the ISI's Punjab sector commander. 'This is part of the lawfare launched against me by the Pakistani military establishment and its intelligence arm, the ISI, with whom I was once working,' Raja said, days before his London trial that started on July 21. Living in exile in the UK, Raja told the Indian news channel that UK counterterrorism police investigated him for nine months on terrorism charges but fully cleared him. He claimed the defamation trial is the Pakistan army's backup plan to silence him. 'They couldn't get me under counterterrorism, so now they're trying their luck in the courts. The UK is the libel tourism capital of the world — as King's Counsel Geoffrey Robertson says,' he stated. ISI exploiting UK's laws to silence critics? Raja accused Munir and DG ISI Lt Gen Asim Malik of exploiting the UK's lenient libel laws to suppress dissent and conceal military crimes, including political manipulation, judicial interference, and widespread violations of civil liberties. He said that his family in Pakistan faces severe repercussions, with his mother under de facto house arrest and her passport revoked to block his return. 'She's practically under house arrest — her passports have been cancelled. My entire family's nationalities have been blocked,' he said. Raja also disclosed that Shahzad Akbar, a witness in his case, was attacked with acid in the UK, an act he attributes to ISI-orchestrated intimidation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The ISI is using all its power to silence this. They just don't want any coverage, because it exposes their soft belly,' he said. Court-martialed in absentia and sentenced to 14 years under Pakistan's Official Secrets Act, Raja insisted his only offence was exposing the military's grip on Pakistan's politics. 'I was committing the cardinal sin: exposing the crimes of my institution — regime change operations, controlling the government, judicial manipulation, and corruption,' he said.
