Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell steps down

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell is stepping down after 35 years at the automaker, including the last three as CEO. Mardell's tenure brought increased profits to JLR, and he started a major restructuring of the automaker's brands and model lineups that's still underway. "Adrian Mardell has expressed his desire to retire from JLR after three years as CEO and 35 years with the company. His successor will be announced in due course," a JLR spokesperson said in a statement. Mardell joined JLR in 1990, holding various positions mostly related to finance until being appointed as CEO in 2023, replacing Thierry Bolloré. He oversaw a prosperous period for JLR, which went from a weak financial state in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic to posting its best profits in a decade last year. Granted, that was helped by the popular (and profitable), current-generation Range Rover and Defender, which launched before Mardell took over but saw initial sales damped by the pandemic. Related: How the Defender Became Land Rover's Best-Selling Model Mardell also oversaw major changes at both of JLR's brands. At Land Rover, the Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover nameplates were elevated to brands in their own right. It was a logical extension of the strategy that led to the creation of spinoff models like the Range Rover Evoque and Velar, but does mean the Land Rover name itself takes a back seat these days. At Jaguar, Mardell started the transformation into a more high-end EV brand heralded by the Jaguar Type 00 concept. The first of Jaguar's new generation of EVs is expected to be unveiled later this year and start production in 2026. Until then, the brand is essentially on hiatus. While Mardell's successor will inherit a stronger automaker, they'll still face challenges. The first of Jaguar's EVs has already been delayed by a few months, along with an electric version of the Range Rover, according to a recent report. JLR hasn't confirmed how long these delays will last. There's also the matter of the Trump Administration's tariffs. Under the most recent trade deal, the first 100,000 vehicles imported from the United Kingdom to the United States will be subject to a 10% tariff, while any subsequent vehicles will be hit with a 25% tariff. JLR also assembles the Defender and Discovery in Slovakia, meaning those models will be subject to a 15% tariff, per the most recent trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union. JLR CEO Suddenly Retires Ahead of Jaguar's Big Relaunch

Adrian Mardell, the man who turned Jaguar Land Rover into, simply, JLR, and put in place a strategy to market Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as their own brands is retiring. Autocar reported Thursday that Mardell is stepping away after two years on the job , and JLR hasn't yet announced a successor. Mardell joined JLR in 1990 and became chief financial officer of the company in 2018. He took over the top job after his predecessor, Thierry Bolloré, resigned in 2023. As Autocar points out, Mardell helped JLR become profitable after a few rough years during the Covid-19 pandemic, but his departure comes at a critical time for the company. Jaguar unveiled a rebrand as a high-end EV maker last year with a campaign that was widely mocked. The brand has also stopped production of all previous models in anticipation of a new $100,000-plus electric cars that will arrive into a market that seems to be rejecting luxury EVs. Jaguar is moving into a bold new direction, and it's future is anything but certain. Things are better over at Land Rover thanks to the continued success and profitability of Range Rover and Defender models. But, Range Rover is set to launch its first EV , and it's already been delayed until next year over apparently weak demand. There's also tariffs to contend with. The US has 10-percent duty on the first 100,000 UK cars exported to the US in any given year, which is lower than the duties on cars from any other country. But, the Defender and Discovery are built in Slovakia, which is subject to a 15-percent tariff. In some ways, Mardell leaves JLR better than he found it. But, it faces many of the same challenges all automakers face right now and its own unique set of uncertainties. Mardell's successor will be very busy. JLR postpones new electric models

Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has postponed the launch of its new electric Range Rover and Jaguar models, extending the timeline for additional testing and to allow for an increase in market demand, reported The Guardian. The delay impacts customers awaiting the electric Range Rover, with deliveries now commencing next year instead of late 2025. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Production for the inaugural electric Jaguar since the rebrand, currently known as the Type 00, is slated for August 2026. The subsequent Jaguar model may not launch until December 2027, the report added. Also, an electric Range Rover Velar is anticipated to enter production in April 2026, with the possibility of further delays, and an electric model under the Defender sub-brand could begin production in early 2027. Additionally, two new Jaguar models might also face a delay of 'several months' from the original schedule, two individuals familiar with the company's plans told The Guardian. JLR's sales have recently suffered, experiencing a 15.1% decline in the quarter ending June, partly due to a halt in US exports influenced by President Donald Trump's tariffs. The company has also introduced a voluntary redundancy programme targeting up to 500 managerial positions in the UK. Despite these challenges, JLR claims to have maintained profitability for ten consecutive quarters, bolstered by a UK-US trade deal that reduces tariffs on the initial 100,000 vehicle exports. The carmaker's approach to electric vehicle technology is said to have been more conservative than its competitors, which previously risked incurring fines for not meeting UK electric vehicle sales targets. However, the UK's relaxation of the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate has alleviated some of this pressure. A company spokesperson said: 'By 2030, JLR will sell electric versions of all its luxury brands. Our plans and vehicle architectures are flexible, so we can adapt to different market and client demands.'
