Tim McGraw, Reese Witherspoon and More Stars With Family Members Who Committed Serious Crimes

Yahoo5 days ago
It's a celebrity (adjacent) crime wave! See why stars' law-breaking relatives wound up behind bars.
Woody Harrelson
It's like something out of a movie! The Natural Born Killers star is the son of an actual mobster and contract killer, though the felon was absent for much of the actor's childhood. Among several killings attributed to the 63-year-old's father is the 1979 murder-for-hire of a U.S. district judge on behalf of a drug dealer.
Charles V. Harrelson was sentenced to life in prison and died in 2007. 'I tried for years to get him out,' Woody told The Guardian. 'To get him a new trial… just being a son trying to help his dad.'
Tim McGraw
The 58-year-old didn't learn his dad was baseball great Edwin 'Tug' McGraw until he stumbled upon his birth certificate at age 11. While they eventually met, his dad denied fathering him until after the country music star turned 18.
Maybe he should have stayed away from his newfound family: According to The Associated Press via My Plainview, in 2003, Tug's brother Dennis was convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a neighbor and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison!
Billy Bob Thornton
The Oscar winner has been married six times and has four kids, though he is not close to all of them. In 2011, the 69-year-old's estranged daughter Amanda Brumfield was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated manslaughter for the 2008 death of a child who was in her care, the Palm Beach Post reported. (Amanda's attorneys argued that the 1-year-old was injured trying to get out of a playpen.) Per The Ledger, she was released in 2020, reportedly with the stipulation that she would stop 'pressing her innocence in court.'
Reese Witherspoon
We knew the Legally Blonde star had her own scrape with the law ('You're about to find out who I am,' the 49-year-old threatened an Atlanta cop who pulled over the actress and then-husband Jim Toth on suspicion of DUI in 2013 via a video obtained by TMZ). Turns out, Reese's big brother John also has a record.
In 2002, he was charged with entering a female neighbor's home in Tennessee. According to a sworn affidavit obtained by New York Post, he allegedly 'began kissing the victim on the neck and face' without her consent. Charged with sexual battery, a felony, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was placed on two years probation.
Leighton Meester
'My parents had been part of a very interesting lifestyle, I guess you could say,' the 39-year-old once told Ellen DeGeneres during an appearance on her former talk show. You can say that again!
In 1983, the Gossip Girl alum's mom, Connie, was busted for helping to smuggle 1,200 lbs of marijuana out of Jamaica, and after Leighton's birth had to spend 16 months behind bars. (Also, Leighton's aunt broke out of prison and became the first woman in America to get on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted List!)
Tobey Maguire
Is that why he became the crime-fighting Spider-Man? According to The Independent, in 1993, the 50-year-old's father, Vincent, was convicted of robbing a bank in Reseda, Calif. No career criminal, he reportedly neglected to wear a mask and was quickly IDed and arrested, then spent two years in the pokey.
Perhaps Vincent was driven by desperation. Tobey once told The Guardian, 'As a kid, I was very poor… I always had a roof over my head, but I slept on couches of relatives, and some nights we wandered into a shelter. '

WWE honors Hulk Hogan with another tribute on Monday Night Raw

WWE continues to pay tribute to one of its icons, Hulk Hogan. The wrestling company honored Hogan at the start of Monday Night Raw on July 28 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, four days after his death. The Raw roster came out in the arena to kick off the show, with WWE chief content officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque speaking about Hogan's impact of wrestling. "We lost one of the biggest and most globally recognized icons in the world. A man I grew up watching was fortunate enough to share the ring with and like so many of us were honored to call a friend," Levesque said. "He captivated millions of people and inspired them around the globe. We would not be standing here right now, all of us together, if it was not for him." The honorary 10-bell salute then rang as people in the crowd held up signs and chanted Hogan. Also with the roster was Hogan's son, Nick, and longtime friend and WCW collaborator Eric Bischoff. A tribute video also played highlighting the biggest moments of his Hogan's career, along with other moments outside of the ring. It was the second tribute for Hogan after one was done at Friday Night SmackDown on July 25, the day after his death. Hogan died at the age of 71 after he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida. Considered one of the biggest wrestling stars in history, he was a six-time WWE Champion and inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice, in 2005 for himself and in 2020 as part of the New World Order. Gunman killed, two people wounded in Manhattan shooting

A gunman who opened fire at a Manhattan office building is dead, the New York Police Department says. Police converged on a Park Avenue skyscraper in midtown Manhattan where gunshots were reported fired inside the tower housing offices of several financial firms and the headquarters of the National Football League, police said. The New York Post and CNN, both citing police sources, reported the gunman killed himself. The New York Post newspaper, citing unnamed police sources, reported that a gunman wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle opened fire inside the skyscraper, wounding a police officer and a bystander. The Post reported they were in critical condition. The gunman, the Post said, had barricaded himself inside the office tower, possibly on the 32nd floor of the building. A short time later, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed on X: "At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralised." News media footage showed a large police presence in the area around the office tower. "There is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now," New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement on social media platform X as news of the shooting first surfaced. The FBI said agents from its New York field office were also responding to provide support at the scene.

3 dead, including off-duty police officer, in Midtown Manhattan shooting: Sources

3 dead, including off-duty police officer, in Midtown Manhattan shooting: Sources A man wielding a long gun shot and killed three people, including an off-duty police officer working security in Midtown Manhattan, sources told ABC News The incident occurred in an office building located at 345 Park Ave., sources said. After apparently barricading himself on the 33rd floor, the suspect was found dead from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sources added. Surveillance footage captured the suspect outside the building armed with a long gun, according to sources. The motive is currently under investigation, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said. There is a lockdown at the office building, which contains the headquarters for the investment company Blackstone and the National Football League, sources said. It is unclear if those companies, or any company in the building, were tied to the shooting. Some of the employees inside 345 Park Ave. have been advised that the threat "has been resolved," but are being asked to continue sheltering in place and only leave the building with a police escort, according to a message sent to employees. New York City Mayor Eric Adams earlier warned residents to avoid the area amid the "active shooter investigation." The New York City Police Department also urged people to avoid the vicinity of East 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue due to police activity. MORE: 3 dead, several injured in shooting outside casino in Reno: Police "Expect emergency vehicles & delays in the surrounding area," the NYPD said on social media. FBI New York Field Office management personnel and agents responded "to provide support at the active crime scene in Manhattan," Bongino said on X. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she has been briefed on the situation. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
