Introducing Bounce, a tool to move your following between Bluesky and Mastodon
The makers of Bridgy Fed, the tool that connects decentralized open social networks, like Mastodon and Bluesky, developed a new project called Bounce that will allow users to migrate their social network followers across networks powered by different protocols.
This is a significant step towards making the open social web a more viable alternative to the locked-in ecosystems provided by tech giants like Meta, Snap, Google, TikTok, and X — and where you may be able to delete your account and export your data when you leave, but not actually migrate your account to a new app.
Today, Mastodon, Bluesky, and other social services that run on their protocols (ActivityPub and the AT Protocol, respectively) allow users to move their accounts within their protocol network.
That means a Mastodon user can migrate their account to another Mastodon server, while Bluesky allows users to move their accounts and data from one Personal Data Server (PDS) to another. (The latter is still a work in progress because you can move off of Bluesky's PDS but not back to it!)
However, it hasn't been possible for users to move their accounts or retain their followings by moving from one network to another.
Now led by a nonprofit called A New Social, the makers of Bridgy Fed have developed technology that will make this type of migration possible.
The tech builds on Bridgy Fed to allow users to "move" their Bluesky account to their Mastodon profile's bridged account (an account that listens for your Mastodon posts and then replicates them on Bluesky so your Bluesky followers can see them), then take the bridged account and "move" it to the user's Mastodon profile.
How all this works under the hood is technically complicated because both platforms have different ways of handling migrations. That's why Bridgy Fed has to function as something of a middleman, enabling the transition with servers of its own, custom-built for the purpose of bridging and moves.
Currently a proof-of-concept, the technology will launch into beta in a few weeks -- but not for the casual user.
"I don't want to go as far as saying it's a tech demo, but it was really important to prove that this is possible," says New Social's CEO and executive director, Anuj Ahooja.
There are some complications at present, too. You can't move back to Bluesky's PDS because the social network hasn't built out that technology yet, for starters.
Also, if someone on Bluesky who isn't bridged interacts with your "moved" account, you won't see that once you're on the Mastodon side. But the team is working on developing a feature that will notify you of off-bridge interactions, Ahooja says.
In addition, Bounce alerts you to how many of the people you follow aren't bridged, so if they ever do bridge, you can re-follow them.
Ultimately, the team hopes the technology in Bounce would be obscured from the everyday open social user, who could instead decide simply what app they want to use and then go through a few short steps to move their following.
And while today, Bounce supports Bluesky, Mastodon, and Pixelfed (an ActivityPub-based photo-sharing app), the longer-term goal would be to support any open social platform and protocol, whether that's a long-form blogging platform like Ghost, or even other networks like those running on Nostr or Farecaster.
"We're trying to create an interface for the open social web to handle some of these tougher movements that you have to make," explained Ahooja. "So, if you're unhappy with something Bluesky is doing -- or even if you're not unhappy, but you feel like a platform on the ActivityPub side is doing something that you really needed to do...[you could] do these couple of clicks on Bounce," he added.
Bounce is the third project from A New Social. In addition to Bridgy Fed, the organization also launched a settings page a few weeks ago that makes the process of preparing to bridge easier and allows you to set a custom domain for your account.
The overall goal at A New Social is to shift the power of social networks back to the people, not the platform makers, by giving them tools that let them move their account, their followings, and leave if a platform ever fails them in some way.
This motto of 'People not Platforms' is now emblazoned on merch A New Social sells, like tees, hoodies, hats, cups, and stickers that help monetize its efforts, alongside its Patreon.

Report Finds That X Remains a Key News Source for Many

It seems that reports of X's demise could be premature, with the latest Reuters Institute Digital News Report showing that X is still a key source of news and information in many regions, despite the recent changes at the app. Reuters' digital news consumption report is based on responses from close to 100,000 people across 48 countries, with an average of 2,000 respondents from each nation. So it's a big sample size, providing insight into key trends, which would be largely indicative of the general popularity of the major news sources. You can download the full 171-page report here, which includes a heap more specific insight into key news engagement trends. But in this post, we'll dig into the social media elements specifically, and how X remains a key news source for many, many users. Indeed, according to the data, usage of X for news has remained stable, or has increased, across many markets. As you can see in this chart, looking at the U.S. market specifically, right-leaning interest has increased in the app, which makes sense given the conservative push led by the platform's owner and most followed user Elon Musk. As per the report: 'Since Elon Musk took over the network in 2022 many more right-leaning people, notably young men, have flocked to the network, while some progressive audiences have left or are using it less frequently. Rival networks like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon are making little impact globally, with reach of 2% or less for news.' The report says that the U.S. election has re-energized the platform to some degree, as more people turn to X for news and information. 'Our poll, which was conducted in the weeks after the inauguration, showed that the use of X for news was 8 points higher than the previous year, reaching almost a quarter (23%) of the adult population.' According to the data, X's usage for news has increased in the U.S., Australia, and Poland specifically. And overall, X remains steady as a news source: As you can see, Facebook's usage as a news provider has declined, though it is now picking up again since Meta stopped penalizing news content. Instagram, Snapchat and Bluesky are also rising in terms of news interest, while TikTok continues to gain more influence. 'Overall, a third (33%) of our global sample use TikTok for any purpose and about half of those use the app for news (17%). The fastest growth is in Thailand, where almost half of our sample (49%) now uses TikTok for news, up 10pp on last year, but there are increases everywhere, especially with younger groups.' Given the ongoing debate around the influence of the Chinese government over TikTok trends, that could be a concern, and could lead to more nations taking the U.S. path of seeking to sever the app's ties with its Chinese homeland. Though that hasn't exactly worked out either, but if the belief is that the CCP is able to influence TikTok content, then the app's rising presence as a news provider will raise more concerns in more regions. The report also looks at the rising influence of influencers as news sources, particularly in younger-focused apps. As you can see in this chart, on Snapchat and TikTok, creators now have more presence as news resources than traditional media outlets. Though that may also contribute to, or be inspired by, this element: More and more people are questioning the accuracy of what they see online. Which could suggest that influencers, with whom people have developed a relationship, are now seen as more trustworthy in some cases than mainstream providers, and that could hold as these younger users move into older age brackets. That points to the need for increased digital literacy, which should be part of every school curriculum worldwide. Some nations have already seen great success in teaching skepticism of online sources, and this is an important life skill in the modern age. Especially if you're going to trust X as your key source of news. Many reports have found that X enables the amplification of misinformation, with its Community Notes model failing to slow the spread of some of the most harmful, dangerous content. But it remains a key news source for many, which could point to a larger concern. But then again, X isn't considered the worst culprit on this front: Facebook and TikTok are seemingly trusted less overall, particularly in African nations. Maybe, then, X's influence is more concentrated in the Western world, while other platforms play a bigger role in swaying opinion in other regions. Which could be another point of concern in TikTok's growth, dpeending on how you look at it. Either way, some interesting trend notes, which provide a snapshot of the modern media landscape. Exclusive: Meta names Connor Hayes head of Threads
Longtime Meta executive Connor Hayes has been named head of Threads, Axios has learned, marking a significant milestone for the two-year old product. Why it matters: Instagram head Adam Mosseri has overseen Threads since its inception, but as the app has grown, so too has its need for a leader solely focused on its future. " Given Threads' maturity, we think we need a dedicated app lead who can focus all of their time on helping Threads move forward," Mosseri wrote in a Thursday staff memo obtained by Axios. Zoom in: Mosseri said Hayes will begin his new role by mid-September and will report to him directly. Once onboarded, all product managers, engineers, designers, data scientists and user experience researchers working on Threads will report in through Hayes, he added. Threads data engineers will continue reporting through Brad Ruderman, Meta's senior director of data engineering. Catch up quick: Hayes was part of the original team that built the first version of Threads when it launched in 2023. He later served as Meta's vice president of product for generative AI. Hayes first joined Facebook in 2011 and has served in various product roles across Meta and Instagram over the past 14 years. Zoom out: The move comes as Threads continues to grow rapidly around the world. While X is still the dominant real-time, social discourse platform in terms of global daily web visits, Threads is on the cusp of catching up in terms of mobile app users, according to Similarweb data. Between the lines: Meta launched Threads in 2023 as an offshoot of Instagram. Having access to Instagram's user base of more than 1 billion people helped Threads grow quickly, especially compared to other real-time, social discourse apps like Mastodon and Bluesky. In his staff note, Mosseri said Threads now has more than 350 million monthly users. Between the lines: When Threads first launched, the product was closely linked to Instagram. Today, it's "grown into a platform with its own culture, its own energy, and a rapidly growing community," Mosseri said. To that point, he added that more than a third of daily Threads users with connections follow different accounts on Threads than on Instagram. "It's exciting to see Threads establishing its own unique user base," he noted. What to watch: Meta continues to roll out new Threads features that make the app more akin to X, formerly Twitter, which launched in 2006.

Jack Dorsey backs an open-source development collective with $10 million
Jack Dorsey has been back in the news lately after unveiling a pair of new apps he worked on, Bluetooth-based messenager Bitchat and UV exposure tracker Sun Day . The Block CEO put those together under the auspices of a new development collective called "and Other Stuff," a nonprofit that he is backing with a $10 million cash injection through his StartSmall foundation , as TechCrunch reports. The group plans to work on open-source projects, including ones that could become consumer social media apps, along with app-development tools. The developers met on Nostr, a social networking protocol Dorsey has also backed financially. The "and Other Stuff" collective aims to support Nostr's "transition from an experimental protocol to a widely adopted, sustainable ecosystem through collaborative growth and funding." In addition to Nostr projects, the collaborators plan to experiment with building tools based on the likes of ActivityPub — which powers Mastodon — and Cashu. That e-cash platform's creator, dubbed Calle, is part of the "and other Stuff" team alongside Twitter's first employee, Evan Henshaw-Plath. The projects that "and Other Stuff" has worked on so far include voice note app heynow, a private messenger app called White Noise and social community +chorus. They have also created Shakespeare, which is designed to help developers build Nostr-based social apps with AI. Dorsey has long fostered an interest in open-source protocols. In 2019, during his second stint as Twitter CEO, the company set up a team that was tasked with forming an open, decentralized standard for social media. Dorsey had hoped to eventually shift Twitter onto that protocol, but of course that didn't pan out. Instead, Twitter spun out that project — Bluesky — as a public benefit corporation in 2022. Last year, after leaving Bluesky's board, Dorsey claimed that the team there was "literally repeating all the mistakes" he made while running Twitter such as, uh, setting up moderation tools (which are, in reality, a critically important aspect of any successful social platform). On an episode of Henshaw-Plath's new podcast , Dorsey reiterated a point he had made previously, that Twitter was beholden to advertisers (an issue that X is contending with under Elon Musk's ownership ). "It's hard for something like [Twitter] to be a company, because you have corporate incentives when it wants to be a protocol," Dorsey said. "If [Twitter] were an open protocol, if it were truly an open project, you could build a business on top of it, and you could build a very healthy business on top of it." He was also once again critical of Bluesky's structure, adding that, "I want to push the energy in a different direction... which is more like Bitcoin, which is completely open and not owned by anyone from a protocol layer. That's what I see in Nostr as well. That's where I want to push my energy... rather into the more corporate direction, even if it is a public benefit corporation."
