Ask DU to grant OBC aspirants more days to submit certs: Academics to UGC

Time of India23-06-2025

New Delhi: Citing repeated administrative delays that cost hundreds of other backward classes aspirants their admissions each year, academics and former members of OBC Commission urged University Grants Commission to direct Delhi University to extend the deadline for submitting non-creamy layer certificates by 15-20 days.
This was a persistent issue, with educators highlighting that many OBC applications were rejected due to rigid certificate deadlines and technicalities, such as formatting inconsistencies, language barriers and missing "non-creamy layer" declarations. Students from out-of-the-state and rural areas were especially vulnerable, often unable to obtain the required documents within the limited submission window.
The admissions for DU's undergraduate programmes for 2025 are currently underway, based on CUET-UG scores.
According to a member of Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA), approximately 10% of the eligible OBC candidates lost their chance at admission each year because they were unable to submit updated non-creamy layer certificates during the verification process. In a letter to the UGC chairman, DUTA members and former OBC commission members emphasised that these recurring delays disproportionately affected students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds.

They pointed out that bureaucratic inefficiencies at the local level often prevented the timely issuance of updated certificates, resulting in the disqualification of otherwise eligible students and undermining the constitutional principles of social justice and inclusion.
"A large number of students, particularly from rural and marginalised communities, face significant delays in obtaining updated certificates due to inefficiencies in local administration," the letter stated.
These delays, often beyond the students' control, left them excluded from the admission process despite fulfilling all other eligibility requirements, it added. "This not only deprives deserving candidates of access to higher education but also perpetuates systemic inequities, contradicting the spirit of inclusive education policies.
" The grace period, as per academics, would accommodate genuine administrative delays and ensure that no student is unfairly denied admission.
Queries sent to UGC and DU officials went unanswered. The issue surfaced frequently over the years, with repeated appeals made to the authorities for additional time. In 2023, the chairman of National Commission for Other Backward Classes wrote to the DU vice-chancellor, highlighting the "severe lack of time" given to OBC students to furnish their caste certificates.
Approximately 71,624 undergraduate seats will be filled this year through DU's Common Seat Allocation System. Students who performed well in CUET-UG 2025 and cleared Class XII with the necessary qualifications are eligible to apply.

We have put up ‘no entry' board for Akhilesh: Rajbhar

Jaunpur: Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief and Uttar Pradesh minister Om Prakash Rajbhar on Monday said that Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav is desperate to return to power, but he and other regional parties have already put up a 'No Entry' board for him. 'Akhilesh is eager to come to power, but I, Sanjay Nishad (of Nishad Party), Anupriya Patel (Apna Dal-S), and Jayant Chaudhary (Rashtria Lok Dal) have hung a 'No Entry' sign for him,' Rajbhar said while addressing SBSP workers at three different meetings in Jaunpur district. During the meetings, Rajbhar held discussions on strengthening the SBSP at the grassroots level and urged party workers to consolidate its presence at the booth level so that it can play a decisive role in elections. Criticising the previous Samajwadi Party (SP) government, Rajbhar said, 'There were 800 riots across Uttar Pradesh during the SP regime, while under the BJP rule in the last eight years, not a single riot has taken place. People need to understand this difference.' He also expressed concern over recent incidents in Etawah and Prayagraj, saying no one has the right to take the law into their own hands and strict action should be taken against the guilty. 'All is well in BJP,' he quipped when asked by reporters about Union Home Minister Amit Shah referring to Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya as a 'friend'. Rajbhar's comments come at a time when Uttar Pradesh's political landscape is a buzz about new alliances and shifting equations. His 'No Entry' remark is seen as a pointed message to the SP, which has made PDA (picchda, dalit alpsankhyak) its main plank, suggesting that OBC-centric regional parties are now aiming for a more decisive and independent role in state politics.

Delhi Confidential: Caste factor

On the eve of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav's birthday, party leaders from four prominent non-Yadav OBC castes — Maurya, Shakya, Kushwaha and Saini — organised a blood donation camp at King George's Medical University in Lucknow on Monday. Over 300 party workers donated blood at the camp. Yadav himself visited the camp to appreciate the donors and also cut a cake. SP has a good support base among the Yadav OBC castes but the votes of the other OBC castes get divided among different political parties. Model Office The constituency office of Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, who represents the Navsari (Gujarat) Lok Sabha seat, has emerged as a 'model MP office' for fellow BJP MPs and MLAs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also learnt to have cited Patil's office as an example during a recent meeting with BJP MLAs from Delhi, urging them to visit and learn how it operates. Since then, several Delhi BJP leaders have been planning a visit to his office. Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have also expressed interest in understanding how Patil's office functions. Digital Classic Bollywood classic Umrao Jaan is among the films under consideration for India's Cannes Film Festival entry, it is learnt. The 4K remastered version of the the iconic 1981 film, starring Rekha, Farooq Shaikh and Naseeruddin Shah, premiered Sunday in Delhi. Residents ban entry of priests in Bihar village to protest Itawah Kathavachak assault incident

PATNA: Row over assault and misbehaviour with a non-Brahmin Kathavachak in Itawah district of Uttar Pradesh have reached poll-bound Bihar, too. Residents of Tikulia village in East Champaran district on June 30 imposed restrictions on the entry of Brahmins, especially priests following assault and misbehaviour with a non-Brahmin Kathavachak in Itawah district of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh on June 21. Residents put up banners on the entrance gate of the village, restricting the movement of Brahmins, especially priests. They also threatened to impose a penalty on anybody who dared to defy the ban order and perform puja. Electric pillars have also been painted with a similar ban order. Dharmendra Kumar, a local resident, said that a unanimous decision to impose ban on the entry of priests was taken at a meeting. 'We are protesting against those priests who don't have any knowledge of Vedas and 'dharma shashtras'. Yet they were doing the job of priests. Several priests have been found consuming alcohol, which can not be justified,' he added. The village under Adapur police station limits is dominated by people from the Yadav caste, which comes under the Other Backwards Classes (OBC) category. The priests come from nearby villages to perform puja and other religious rituals request of local residents. Another resident, Janardan Yadav, said that it hurt the sentiments of people when they came to know about Mukut Mani Singh Yadav, a kathavachak, being assaulted by residents in Itawa district of Uttar Pradesh recently, for being a non-Brahmin. 'Mukut Mani Yadav has been doing 'Kathavachan' for the past several years. But it never happened that he had to face a protest for being a non-Brahmin. But it happened in Itawa recently under Yogi Adityanath's regime. Similar incidents will come to light in days to come', he asserted. Dharmaveer Choudhary, Station House Officer (SHO) of Adapur police station, said that the posters and banners erected at the village have been removed. Police have identified one Sandeep Yadav, a Youtuber, behind the entire episode. Legal action will be initiated against him soon, he added. He also said that patrolling has been intensified in the village as a precautionary measure. 'We are keeping a close vigil on activities of anti-social elements who may try to vitiate the atmosphere in the village,' SHO Choudhary said.
