'Loving mom' suffers horrific tragedy while enjoying daughter's softball game under shady tree

Daily Mail6 days ago
A 'loving mom' from Pennsylvania was killed in a freak accident while enjoying her daughter's softball game last week.
Gendie Miller, 49, and her husband Bill were rooting for their 16-year-old daughter Marlee on Wednesday when they decided to get out of the 90-degree heat and sit under a tree, WPXI reports.
As the teen was working on her drills just before 7pm, Bill said he heard a cracking sound that jolted him from his seat.
'I said to my wife, "Let's go,"' he recounted to WTAE.
'I jumped out of my chair, felt a small branch of some sort that grazed my leg. And I immediately turned to my right to look back at her and she was lying face down with large, multiple branches and limbs.'
Gendie had apparently been struck in the head by one of the branches, which Bill said were between 10 to 12 inches thick.
Good Samaritans immediately ran over to help remove the branches off of her limp body, Bill said, but the damage was too severe.
She died on her way to the local hospital.
'With the heavy load of the type of branch and limb, it was devastating,' the grieving husband said. 'And I can tell you that she didn't die from her heart, because her heart was too big.'
He explained that his wife of 17 years was known for her kind spirit, as well as her love for their travel softball family in Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
'She would never miss a practice or an event, high school, travel ball, wherever it was,' Bill said. 'That was who she was.'
Family friend Luka Bompiani also described Gendie as 'such a loving woman, caring woman and a mother who lived for her daughter.
'And she put everything she had into Marlee and everything she had into Bill,' he said. 'It's just sad.'
In a statement, Sheri Burdett, the District 9 USA Softball of Pennsylvania commissioner, said she was 'deeply saddened to learn of the tragic situation that occurred before the start of our tournament.'
'Our thoughts and prayers are with the Miller family during this incredibly difficult time,' she said. 'At this moment, our sole focus is on supporting them in any way we can.'
McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko also said his 'thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.
'An evening that started like any other, with families and friends gathered in the park for a game, has ended in tragedy after this horrible accident.'
Bill said he remains in shock about what happened, while their teenage daughter is 'being very strong.'
Still, community members are rallying around the family, with one of Marlee's coaches on her Nitro Fastpitch team setting up an online fundraiser to help Bill with the expenses related to his wife's untimely passing.
'Between medical/ambulance bills, funeral items and initial lost wages, Bill and Marlee could use all the hope they can get,' Michael Mull writes in the GoFundMe, which had already raised nearly $48,000 for the family as of Sunday.
'Although it doesn't bring back their loved one, it takes a bit of the burden off of coming up with funds they don't have right now for something so unexpected.'
'You never know when your time comes and this was such a freak accident that they definitely need the community support around them,' added Bompiani.
Yet the family friend expressed his hope that the family will be OK.
He noted that he had spoken with Bill on Friday, when the softball coach told him Marlee looked up at him earlier that day and said, 'Hey dad, we got this. We're gonna get through this, we got this together.'
'When I heard that [it] just brought tears to my eyes,' Bompiani said.

Eerie photo shows suspected Montana shooter fleeing shirtless and barefoot after killing four people

A new chilling photo has been released revealing the moments after the Montana shooter suspect fled the scene shirtless and barefoot. The grainy image, released by the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, depicted Michael Brown, 45, running from The Owl Bar in Anaconda on Friday down an outdoor concrete staircase. He appeared to grip the walls wearing only black biker shorts after allegedly killing four people. The Montana Department of Justice said on Saturday afternoon that the search for Brown is still ongoing. Authorities are focused on the area off of Stumptown Road and are engaging ground and air resources. Three patrons and a bartender were killed in the shooting. It's unclear if Brown knew the victims or what the suspect's motives were. Authorities confirmed that Brown lived next door to the bar. The Montana Department of Justice said that more information would be released when it became available.

Federal agency opens inquiry into ex-special counsel Jack Smith over Trump investigations

The US office of special counsel, an independent federal agency, confirmed to NBC News on Saturday that it is investigating former Department of Justice prosecutor Jack Smith for possible violations of the Hatch Act. Smith led investigations into Donald Trump's part in January 6 US Capitol riot and alleged mishandling of classified documents. The confirmation of an investigation comes after Arkansas senator Tom Cotton, a Republican, requested last week that Smith, 56, be investigated for 'unprecedented interference in the 2024 election'. The Hatch Act, a federal law passed in 1939, limits certain political activities of federal employees. Trump, along with other prominent Republican lawmakers, have argued that Smith's investigations into Trump amounted to illegal political activity. Smith was appointed as special counsel by then attorney general Merrick Garland in 2022 – three days after Trump announced his bid for a second term – to investigate potential interference with the 2020 election and the handling of classified documents. However, the US office of special counsel, the federal agency investigating Smith, is different from the type of justice department-appointed special counsel position that was held by Smith. As an independent federal agency, it lacks the power to bring criminal charges, but can instead seek disciplinary action for a federal government employee or refer its findings to the justice department for investigation. In a series of social media posts on Wednesday, Cotton said that Smith's legal actions 'were nothing more than a tool for the Biden and Harris campaigns. This isn't just unethical, it is very likely illegal campaign activity from a public office.' Cotton said Smith 'pushed for an out-of-the-ordinary, rushed trial for President Trump, with jury selection to begin just two weeks before the Iowa caucuses. No other case of this magnitude and complexity would come to trial this quickly.' His resignation came soon after the justice department asked a federal appeals court to reverse a judge's order, blocking the release of his investigative report focused on Trump's alleged efforts to undo the 2020 presidential election. A second Smith-authored report, into Trump's handling of classified documents, was also blocked from publication.

Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson arrested on domestic violence offense at airport

Reigning 100m world champion Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Richardson was arrested Sunday on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense, according to a police report obtained by the Associated Press. On Thursday, she ran in the opening round of the women's 100m at US track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. She has an automatic bye to the world championships in September in Tokyo as the defending champion. The 25-year-old Richardson was booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, at 6.54pm last Sunday and released Monday at 1.13pm. 'USATF is aware of the reports and is not commenting on this matter,' USA Track and Field said in a statement. Richardson's agent did not immediately reply to an email request for comment. The police report said an officer at the airport was notified by a Transportation Security Administration supervisor of a disturbance between Richardson and her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman. The officer reviewed camera footage and observed Richardson reach out with her left arm and grab Coleman's backpack and yank it away. Richardson then appeared to get in Coleman's way with Coleman trying to step around her. Coleman was shoved into a wall. The report later said Richardson appeared to throw an item at Coleman, which the TSA indicated may have been headphones. In the police report, the officer said: 'I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim.' Richardson won the 100 at the 2023 world championships in Budapest and finished with the silver at the Paris Games last summer. She also helped the 4x100 relay to an Olympic gold. She had a positive marijuana test at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials and didn't compete at the Tokyo Olympics.
