BJP-TIPRA Motha relation turns sour in Tripura?
TIPRA Motha leaders have confronted the govt on several issues since they joined the ruling front and got two ministerial berths last year. After a long persuasion, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) appointed an interlocutor to negotiate TIPRA Motha's core demand for Greater Tipraland and associated socio-economic, cultural and social issues, but there has been no headway.
BJP and TIPRA Motha have been facing differences on selection of scripts for Kokborok (dialect spoken by tribals).
While Motha and other tribal parties demanded for the Roman script, BJP argued for Bengali or Devanagari script for the language. The ruling party of Tripura ADC has been fighting for direct funding from the Centre and empowerment, for which they said to have forged an alliance with BJP, but this has not happened yet, Motha leaders said.
Recently, TIPRA party launched an agitation demanding action against district magistrate (Gomati) TK Chakma for alleged misbehaviour with ADC CEM Purna Chandra Jamatia and Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.

"Freed Area More Than Size Of Chandigarh": Himanta Sarma On Eviction Drive
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday defended the state's ongoing eviction drives, stating it is essential to curb illegal encroachment, and warned the indigenous people about a growing demographic shift in the Upper Assam region. Addressing a press conference at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Dispur, the Chief Minister said that over the past four years, the BJP-led government has reclaimed over 160 square kilometres of land from the encroachers who have "succeeded in making Assamese people a minority in South and Central Assam." He further said that while conducting eviction drives, it was found that the encroachers were mostly people who owned land in their native districts, and yet moved to Assam to settle illegally in different parts of the state. "It's not that the people evicted are all landless. Many of them have land elsewhere but move into new areas to encroach forest lands and alter the demographic composition of constituencies," CM Sarma said. He added that the state government has cleared approximately 40,000 acres of encroached land from areas including forest lands, grazing reserves, tribal belts and blocks, and government-owned land. "This area is larger than the city of Chandigarh, which is around 125 square kilometers, and approximately equal to two-thirds of South Delhi," Mr Sarma said. The Chief Minister also said that the intruders are targeting North Assam next, adding, "Had we acted earlier, we might have been able to stop the changes in Lower and Middle Assam. Now it has become irreversible." "Once they become a political force, eviction becomes impossible, and this threatens the identity of the indigenous Assamese people," CM Sarma said. He added that the eviction drives were not only aimed at reclaiming the encroached land, but also restoring ecological balance, highlighting that the government planted lakhs of trees and recovered wildlife habitats in the cleared areas.

Congress draws parallels between the NRC, and the SIR in Bihar
Taking on the Election Commission of India (ECI) over reports that lakhs of illegal persons from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar had been traced in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Congress on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) asked if the poll panel would declare the previous elections 'null and void'. 'If this is true, then the elections in which the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has won, they did it with the votes of people from Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal. Those elections should be declared null and void,' Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar said during a press conference at the party headquarters. The ECI should not start an exercise like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the name of revision of electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. The SIR should not be about verifying citizenship, which is the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs, he added. The SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar showed the poll panel had admitted to what the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress party, had been saying — that there was a problem with the electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. 'If Rahul Gandhi is right, then the ECI should give the Congress the data it has been asking for. First, they should accept this, and then adopt the right method to rectify it,' he said. 'If they have to revise, it should be done with transparency and given proper time. What would be done in three months? It should be given 13 months or [carried out] over three years... They should revise electoral rolls and not ask for proof of citizenship. That is the job of the Union Home Ministry,' Mr. Kumar said. The Congress leader also expressed grave concern over 'the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar', alleging that criminals had no fear of the law and were roaming around freely in the State. The education system in Bihar had collapsed under the Janata Dal-United (JD-U)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, he alleged. 'I want to tell the youth that if those in power are not bothered about your future, and are only worried about their chairs (a reference to positions of power), then they should be removed from their chairs,' Mr. Kumar said.

Punjab's Anti-Sacrilege Bill Meets Roadblock, Sent To Select Committee
Chandigarh: The anti-sacrilege bill, meant to introduce stringent punishment for desecration of religious scriptures - be it Guru Granth Sahab, Gita, Quran or the Bible -- did not get passed in the Punjab assembly today despite there being a broad consensus on the need for tougher laws. The Punjab Prevention of Crimes Against Holy Scriptures Bill 2025 -- which proposed life imprisonment for culprits -- was sent to a select committee. The BJP had raised questions over the bill, asking why feedback from political and social parties was not sought. The Congress wanted more time to scrutinise it. The Select Committee will include assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and it would take the opinion of all stakeholders and submit its report within six months. The proposal related to this was passed unanimously in the Assembly. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann told the assembly that unlike earlier, those who desecrate the holy scriptures will get exemplary punishment once the bill is passed. "Whenever incidents of desecration took place, our heart used to break. But till date there was no such concrete law in this matter. The culprits used to come out after serving the sentence after a short time. Therefore, it was very important that anyone who desecrates any religious text should get exemplary punishment," he said. Punjab has been trying to pass an anti-sacrilege bill since several instances of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib about a decade ago. Attempts were made in 2016 and 2018 to pass similar bills. In 2016, the Centre thumbs downed the IPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016 and CrPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016, saying all religions should be treated equally given the secular nature of the Constitution. In 2018, the Amarinder Singh government passed two similar bills which did not get the President's nod. The current bill has provisions for strict punishment including life imprisonment for the desecration of holy scriptures. Till now, cases involving desecration of religious texts were filed under IPC and later BNS Sections 298 (hurting religious sentiments, carrying a jail term of 3 years, fine or both), 299 (outraging religious feelings carrying a three-year jail term, a fine or both) and 300 (disturbing religious assemblies carrying a one-year jail term, a fine or both).
