NEW DELHI: Home minister
Amit Shah
was the first to be informed by
Delhi Police
commissioner Sanjay Arora about "four or five half-burnt sacks" of cash at Justice Yashwant Varma's official residence within hours of its chance discovery following a fire on the night of March 14 at the bungalow's storeroom.
Responding to a fire emergency call, firefighters and police reached Justice Varma's Tughlaq Crescent bungalow a little after 11.30pm on March 14. The first responders, who stumbled upon the bags stuffed with cash, shot videos of half-burnt currency notes of Rs 500 denomination around midnight. They left after dousing the fire around 1am on March 15. Delhi Police chief Arora first informed the home minister on March 15 and, later, briefed Delhi HC Chief Justice D K Upadhyay about the cash.
Delhi Police chief Sanjay Arora also shared "certain still photographs and video" of the storeroom fire with the Delhi HC CJ, who in turn informed then CJI Sanjiv Khanna, triggering a chain of events which led to setting up of an inquiry into the sensational episode.
The inquiry panel said in its report, "The information was shared by Arora with Justice D K Upadhyay in the late afternoon of March 15, who was out of station in Lucknow on account of Holi vacation, and he was informed that a report had been sent to the Union home minister, wherein there was reference that there were four or five half-burnt sacks of Indian currency at the spot."

The inquiry panel comprising Punjab and Haryana CJ Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh CJ G S Sandhawalia and Karnataka HC's Justice Anu Sivaraman had sent 10 phones belonging to the first responders, used for taking videos and still images of burning cash in the storeroom, for authentication by Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh.
The laboratory authenticated the images and videos - one of 67 seconds shot by head constable Roop Chand and another of 70 seconds shot by head constable Sunil Kumar.
The panel said, "The phones have been analysed by us having been sent to CFSL, Chandigarh, and are per se admissible in view of the provisions of Section 329 of BNSS."
Apart from legal admissibility of the evidence against Justice Varma, the panel said these pieces of evidence also stood corroborated by witnesses. "The said videos have been shown to independent eye-witnesses, including the fire/police personnel who were at the spot (and) who have vouched for the same," the panel said.

PM Modi in Brazil for BRICS Summit, Trump tariffs likely in group's focus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on Sunday (Saturday evening local time) for the BRICS Summit 2025 in Rio de Janeiro after wrapping his Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago visits. Prime Minister Narendra has a packed agenda for the BRICS Summit 2025 in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro.(AFP) This is the fourth leg of PM Modi's five-nation tour, which began on July 2. Modi then landed in Argentina for the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over five decades. Now he is in Brazil, from where he will head to Namibia to cap off his longest diplomatic tour yet. The BRICS summit will be held without the presence of the two big bloc leaders. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will not attend the meeting this year. However, the annual summit has a packed agenda. PM Narendra Modi in Brazil: India's BRICS agenda PM Narendra Modi's first priority is that the BRICS bloc of nations calls out terrorism in clear terms. The BRICS declaration in Rio de Janeiro is expected to condemn the Pahalgam terror attack, which took 26 lives, mostly of tourists, in the Jammu and Kashmir resort town of Pahalgam on April 22. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the attack, targeting terror infrastructure in PoJK and Pakistan. Apart from that, the BRICS summit is expected to adopt a framework for climate finance, collaboration on artificial intelligence, and a new health initiative aimed at reducing disparities. India is also pushing for trade settlement in national currencies, which would reduce the global South's dependence on the US dollar. BRICS on Trump tariffs BRICS leaders' meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday is also expected to decry US President Donald Trump's "indiscriminate" trade tariffs, saying they are illegal and risk hurting the global economy. Emerging nations, which represent about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output, have united over "serious concerns" about US import tariffs, according to a draft summit statement reported by AFP. The draft summit declaration does not mention the United States or its president by name, but leaders gathering for talks on Sunday and Monday could amend it. "We voice serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO (World Trade Organization) rules," AFP quoted the draft text. The draft text warned that such measures "threaten to further reduce global trade" and are "affecting the prospects for global economic development."

Mobility revolution: Union minister Nitin Gadkari unveils futuristic roadmap; pitches electric buses, ropeways and hyperloops

Union minister Nitin Gadkari unveils futuristic roadmap Union minister Nitin Gadkari has outlined a bold vision to transform India's transport landscape, with a focus on electric rapid mass transport, hyperloop corridors in urban centres, and ropeway and cable-car connectivity in remote regions. In an interview with news agency PTI, Gadkari said the government is working on multiple futuristic mobility solutions that aim to cut pollution, improve connectivity, and reduce logistics costs. 'We are driving innovation. A revolution in mass mobility is underway,' he said, underlining how technology, sustainability, and accessibility will shape the next phase of India's infrastructure growth. According to the minister, work is underway on 360 ropeway and funicular railway projects in hilly terrains, including Kedarnath, with 60 already in progress. These systems, designed for steep inclines, are seen as essential for providing safe and efficient transportation in remote areas. At the urban level, Gadkari revealed that pilot projects like Metrino pod taxis, hyperloop systems, and pillar-based transport networks are planned for Delhi and Bengaluru. 'Days are not far off when cities will have cable-run buses and electric rapid mass transport with aeroplane-like facilities,' he said. He also confirmed that tenders have been floated for 135-seater electric buses in Nagpur, equipped with premium seating, AC, and the ability to travel at 120–125 km/hr. These buses, capable of recharging in 30–40 minutes, will initially operate on trial and then be introduced on intercity routes like Delhi-Jaipur and Mumbai-Pune. On the road infrastructure front, Gadkari reiterated the ministry's goal of building 100 km of highways per day and upgrading 25,000 km of two-lane roads to four lanes. National highways have expanded from 91,287 km in 2013-14 to 1,46,204 km today, he claimed. High-speed corridors have also grown substantially, from 93 km in 2014 to 2,474 km now. To improve safety and quality, new technologies like precast construction, AI-based monitoring, and 3-ft road barriers are being rolled out, as per the minister. The government also plans to plant 20–25 crore trees along highways, with a proposal for a 'tree bank' in advanced stages with the environment ministry. On the green energy front, Gadkari said 11 companies, including Tata, Toyota, Hyundai, and Mahindra, have agreed to manufacture flex-fuel vehicles. These vehicles can run on ethanol or methanol blends, helping to reduce India's reliance on fossil fuels. India's transport sector contributes nearly 40 per cent to the country's air pollution, Gadkari noted. He said the switch to green mobility would not only bring down emissions but also slash India's fuel import bill, currently around Rs 22 lakh crore. He further stated that improved infrastructure and alternative fuels would help bring logistics costs down from 14 per cent to 9 per cent of GDP by year-end. Earlier, Gadkari recently said India could become a net energy exporter in 6–7 years, driven by advances in ethanol, biodiesel, and hydrogen fuel technologies. Imagine someone saying 'This guy comes from a culture that lies about everything' about a prominent Jew and then falling back to 'oh actually I meant because he's a Zionist'. It's stupid when the anti-Israel extremist protestors say it and it's also dumb you're saying the equivalent here."
