Key factors for next UP BJP chief: Caste, cadre, chemistry with CM

Time of India6 days ago
Lucknow: The much-anticipated appointment of the new UP BJP chief will be done after factoring in a slew of key parameters, including caste of the candidate, and whether he/she belongs to original cadre (the one having a robust backing of the RSS and associated with the party for at least 10-15 years).
Besides, deft organisational skills and having a seamless coordination with Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
are the other important factors.
This is learnt to have been the high point of the recent discussions between the state leadership and the party's high command even as the BJP gears up for future electoral battles, including the 2026 panchayat polls and subsequently the 2027 UP assembly elections.
The caste of the new UP BJP president, sources said, was indeed one the crucial factors which the party sought to examine in a bid to blunt opposition's aggressive charge – especially Samajwadi Party's Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (PDA) poll narrative which is said to have dented the saffron outfit in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, sinking its tally from 62 to 33 in UP.
As a matter of fact, the names of at least seven leaders – including three from the OBC community, two Dalit and two Brahmins – have been doing the rounds for the past many days. Among the OBC leaders which have emerged are Union minister BL Verma and two UP ministers: Swatantra Dev Singh and Dharampal Singh. Likewise, among Dalits, the party was considering the names of MLC Vidhya Sagar Sonkar and former MP Ram Shankar Katheria.
BJP sources do not rule out the possibility of picking up a Brahmin for the top job. Not surprisingly, the names of former deputy CM Dinesh Sharma and former MP from Basti, Harish Dwivedi were doing the rounds.
Sources said that the party planned hoisting an original cadre -- having a strong affiliation with the RSS -- as the new state chief to boost the morale of `mool karyakarta'. Sources said that the party wanted to give weightage to a leader who has been associated with the BJP well prior to its meteoric rise under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi since 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The insistence on a candidate with "original cadre" credentials, experts said, signalled BJP's desire for ideological purity and grassroots commitment. It also underscores the party's dependence on RSS's organizational machinery. Similarly, the 15-year affiliation with the party could potentially act as a litmus test for loyalty and an insider's understanding of the party's ideological ethos.
The BJP, sources said, is zeroing in on a leader who could manage multiple fronts simultaneously: internal factionalism, alliance dynamics and voter outreach, essentially in the rural and semi-urban precincts.
Sources said that the party preferred a leader who had a strong ground-level connection to energize booth-level workers and mobilize them for future campaigns.
Coordination with the Yogi Adityanath-led government was another crucial factor which the party aimed to prioritize before finalising the name of the new state president. This, analysts said, would also help in ensuring policy synergy between the government and the party.
Analysts said that Yogi was not just the administrative face of the state but also a powerful political force in his own right. BJP sources said that the party was in no mood to create any misaligned power centre to avoid a clash of authority in the state. "The party looked for someone who could complement rather than compete with Adityanath," a senior BJP leader said.

Punjab Vigilance conducts searches at real estate baron Ranjit Singh Gill's residence, hours after he joined BJP

Less than 12 hours after prominent Punjab real estate developer Ranjit Singh Gill was inducted into the BJP by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau conducted a search at his Sector 2 residence in Chandigarh on Saturday. The search was ongoing till this report was filed. No one was being allowed to enter or leave the premises. Gill is the founder of the Gillco Group, a real estate development company based in Mohali, Punjab, and was the 'halka in-charge' of Kharar for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) till he quit the party in July. He was widely tipped to join Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), especially after the sitting Kharar MLA Anmol Gagan Maan announced her resignation and decision to quit politics on July 19. However, she took back her resignation the very next day. Gill is a real estate baron and agrarian entrepreneur who began his career in real estate in Ropar in 1990 before moving to Kharar, where he founded the Gillco Group. The company is known for developing luxury residential, commercial, entertainment, and educational projects, including the notable Gillco Valley township, one of the largest in Mohali, spread over nearly 200 acres. Beyond his business ventures, Gill has been politically active. He was a close confidant of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and served as the party's general secretary. He contested the Punjab Assembly elections from Kharar in 2017 and 2022 on an SAD ticket but was unsuccessful, finishing third in 2017 and losing to Mann in 2022. Gill's assets were reported to be worth Rs 74 crore in 2022, a significant increase from Rs 29 crore in 2017, as per his election affidavit. He faced an income tax raid in December 2022 at his Gillco Valley office and residences in Chandigarh, alongside associates, with cash recovered during the operation. Additionally, an FIR was registered against him in 2021 under the Disaster Management Act for gathering more than 10 people against the district commissioner's prohibitory orders in force.

Election system in India already dead: Rahul Gandhi reiterates rigged 2024 Lok Sabha polls, claims he has proof

Addressing the annual legal conclave titled 'Constitutional Challenges - Perspectives & Pathways', Gandhi said that he suspected over 80 Lok Sabha seats were rigged in the 2024 general elections. "The truth is that the election system in India is already dead. The Prime Minister of India holds office with a very slim majority. If 15 seats were rigged, we suspect that the number is over 70 to 80, he would not have been the Prime Minister of India. We are going to prove to you in the coming few days how a Lok Sabha election can be rigged and was rigged," Gandhi said while addressing the gathering in the national capital. Highlighting the six-month investigation carried out by Congress, he further alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) doesn't exist and has disappeared. According to documentation received from the EC, Gandhi said that the Congress has ascertained that nearly 1.5 lakh voters out of 6.5 lakh who voted in the Lok Sabha elections were "fake". "It makes it clear that the institution that defends the constitution has been obliterated and taken over. We have such proof that will show the whole country that the institution of the Election Commission does not exist. It has disappeared. It has taken us 6 months of non-stop work to find this proof. You will see with zero doubt how a Lok Sabha election is stolen. 6.5 lakh voters vote, and 1.5 lakh of those voters are fake," Gandhi said. The LoP rekindled his suspicions regarding the election system, saying that he had his doubts about "something being wrong" since 2014. Questioning the BJP's sweeping victories in the assembly elections of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi noted that they began investigating electoral malpractices following their defeat in Maharashtra, where one crore new voters appeared within months ahead of the assembly elections, ultimately voting for the BJP. "I've been speaking recently about the election system. I had always suspected something was wrong, starting from 2014. I had a suspicion in the Gujarat Assembly elections already. This ability to win sweeping victories. The Congress Party didn't get a single seat in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, or Gujarat, which surprised me. Whenever we spoke, people said, 'Where's the proof?' Then, something happened in Maharashtra," Gandhi said. "In the Lok Sabha, we won the election. And then four months later, we didn't just lose, we were obliterated. Three formidable parties suddenly just evaporated. We started to look seriously for electoral malpractice. We found that in Maharashtra, one crore new voters appeared between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. The bulk of those votes go to the BJP... Now, I say with absolutely no doubt that we have proof," the Congress leader said.

Stay home to avoid rape: Gujarat traffic police's posters spark row; DCP says posters created ‘without their consent'

Posters allegedly sponsored by the Ahmedabad traffic police for a safety campaign have stirred up a controversy, as some of them urged women to stay home to avoid getting raped. The posters, which were pasted in a few localities in the city, have invited criticism from the opposition, which raised questions about women's safety in Gujarat. Posters with statements, "do not attend late night parties, you could be raped or gangraped," and "do not go with your friend to dark, isolated areas, what if she is raped or gangraped?" were pasted on road dividers in Sola and Chandlodia areas and have since been removed. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic West), Neeta Desai clarified that the city traffic police had sponsored posters concerning road safety, not women's safety. Satarkta Group, an NGO, had created the controversial posters without the consent of the traffic police, she claimed. "The NGO had approached us and said they wanted to organise traffic awareness programmes in schools and colleges and wanted our staff to accompany them. We were shown posters related to traffic awareness. But such controversial posters were not shown to us and were plastered without our consent," Ms. Desai said. She added that the posters were immediately removed when the issue was brought to their notice. Gujarat Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took a swipe at the BJP-led government, saying the posters exposed the state of women's safety. "The BJP government in Gujarat talks about women's empowerment, but the ground reality is completely different. In the last three years, more than 6,500 incidents of rape and more than 36 gang rapes have occurred in Gujarat, with more than five rapes per day," the AAP said in a statement. "The chief minister and BJP leaders talk about women's safety, but today in a big city like Ahmedabad, these posters express the reality of Gujarat. Our question to the CM is whether the women of Gujarat should go out of the house at night or not?" it said.
