Landmark Land Law Reforms: CM Dhami marks 4 years of Uttarakhand government's progressive agenda
DEHRADUN: On the occasion of the completion of four years of the Uttarakhand chief minister
Pushkar Singh Dhami
's completing four years, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke about the several achievements of his government, including the revision of the state's land law that restricts the sale of agricultural and horticulture in 11 districts.
Of the 13 districts in Uttarakhand, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts have been exempted from the stringent amendments to the land law.
Speaking to ANI, Dhami said that these stringent amendments to Uttarakhand's land law were in line with public sentiment. He added that the state government has introduced various legislation, including the anti-cheating law, which has become a model for the entire nation.
"People had long-standing expectations about the land law. We have also implemented it. Be it anti-riot law, anti-conversion law to prevent religious conversion, or an encroachment removal campaign, in which we have so far cleared more than 6,500 acres of land from encroachment. The anti-cheating law has become a model for the entire country," Dhami said.
Highlighting the efforts of the Uttarakhand government in combating corruption, CM Dhami said that his government has taken action against those who have engaged in corruption regardless of their "position".

"Apart from this, we have taken major action against corruption. Earlier, people used to say that small fish are being caught, and big fish are being released. Today, along with small fish, big fish are also being caught. Those who are the crocodiles of corruption are also not being spared, regardless of their position," the CM said.
In February, the state legislative assembly passed the Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Destruction and Land Reforms Act, 1950) (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
At that time, Dhami had stated that the state government laid the foundation for land reforms in accordance with public sentiment. Work will be done continuously on land management and land reforms in future as well.
The Uttarakhand government has remained committed to protecting the state's resources and lands from land mafias. The purpose for which people have bought land was not used but misused, Dhami said.
The chief minister said that permission for purchase for agricultural and industrial purposes in the state was given at the collector level.
"It has now been abolished in 11 districts, and provision has been made to take decisions at the state government level only in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. The land transfer of more than 12.5 acres in the approved limit in favour of any person has been abolished in 11 districts and will be decided at the state government level only in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts," CM Dhami said.
He further added that an affidavit has been made mandatory for purchasing 250 square meters of land for residential projects.
"If the affidavit is found to be false, the land will be vested in the state government. Permission to purchase the thrust sector and notified Khasra number land under micro, small and medium industries, which was given at the collector level, will now be given at the state government level," he said.
The chief minister stated that many significant changes have been introduced in the new law. He said that the government had also taken views from stakeholders in Gairsain.
"In these new provisions, the views of the people of the state have been taken, and suggestions have also been taken from everyone. Suggestions were also taken from the people in their districts at the District Magistrates and Tehsil levels of all the districts.
This law has been made on the request of suggestions from everyone," he further said.
The amendment covers land purchases outside municipal limits and excludes Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts. Another major change is that land bought for tourism, industry, and educational facilities will have a ceiling of 12.5 acres in the 11 districts. In the remaining two districts, permission can be sought to purchase more land.

End of the American dream: Over 50 Canadians in ICE custody amid rising fears and legal uncertainty
Biden-era enforcement machine now supercharged under President Donald Trump 's new immigration crackdown. Global Affairs Canada says it's aware of at least 55 Canadian citizens being held by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ). But for the families of those detained, that number is more than a statistic. Frank Olvera and his wife, Cynthia Olivera, a Canadian-born woman who's lived in Los Angeles for decades, thought they were finally taking the right step, completing an interview for her US citizenship. Instead, Olivera was arrested on the spot. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Walmart Cameras Captured These Hilarious 20 Photos Undo 'They took my wife, put her in handcuffs, and swept her away,' Olvera told CBC. 'No due process.' The arrest was reportedly linked to a 1999 border incident, when Olivera tried to return to the US after attending her mother's funeral in Canada. Because she was pregnant at the time and planned to give birth in the US, she was initially refused entry. Live Events Today, she is being held at a detention facility in El Paso, Texas. Her husband says she has endured substandard conditions and repeated transfers. 'They're treated like animals,' he said. 'Sometimes they get hot food, sometimes they don't.' A Montreal entrepreneur trapped Paula Callejas , a 45-year-old Montreal resident, had been working to finalize a US work visa for her swimwear business when she was arrested in Florida on a misdemeanor charge. Despite pleading not guilty, she was transferred to ICE custody and her family hasn't had reliable updates since. 'We don't know where she is from day to day,' a family member said, describing her situation as a 'nightmare.' ICE told CBC News that Callejas 'seems' to be in El Paso, the same facility as Olivera, but could not confirm details. The surge in detentions follows a series of executive orders signed by President Trump earlier this year. According to senior officials, ICE is now under pressure to carry out 3,000 arrests per day, up from about 650 during the earlier months of his second term. Earlier this week, Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem toured a controversial new detention center in Florida dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz." Noem defended the policy, saying, 'We are going after murderers and rapists and traffickers.' But the human toll is hitting far beyond that target. 'I'm ashamed to be an American right now' Frank Olvera, a third-generation American and Trump voter, says the experience has shaken his faith in the system. 'I turn on the TV and see them chasing brown people,' he said. 'This is not what I voted for.' Olvera says he's willing to pay for his wife's deportation, even offer to fly ICE agents back to the US, just to get her home to Canada and restart the citizenship process from there. The Canadian government says it's offering consular assistance and trying to locate all detained citizens, but privacy laws restrict the information it can release. Meanwhile, some detained Canadians have already faced devastating consequences. Johnny Noviello, another Canadian in ICE custody, died last week. His death remains under investigation. For families like Callejas's and Olivera's, the uncertainty is suffocating. 'After all this,' Callejas's family member said, 'she just wants to get out. The dream is over.'

Raj & Uddhav Thackeray reunite after 20 years, slam Hindi rule, and vow a united fight for Marathi pride; here's what we know
Raj and Uddhav Thackeray reunite at Victory rally | Credit: X Uddhav Thackeray, leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), and his cousin Raj Thackeray, chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), shared a public platform for the first time in almost 20 years at the 'Awaj Marathicha' rally held in Worli. The rally, initially planned as a protest against the state government's three-language policy, turned into a victory celebration after the policy was rolled back. The event was attended by thousands of MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) supporters. The joint appearance by the Thackeray cousins was seen as a symbolic gesture of unity, especially after years of political divergence since Raj Thackeray left Shiv Sena in 2005 and later founded the MNS in 2006. Opposition to hindi in schools sparks alliance The recent Maharashtra government order to introduce Hindi as a compulsory third language from Classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English-medium schools triggered widespread opposition. Unless at least 20 students opted for another language, Hindi would be mandatory. Both Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS criticized the order, calling it an attempt to sideline Marathi. NCP (Sharad Pawar's faction) also supported the protests. Uddhav Thackeray termed the move a 'language emergency', clarifying that he was not against Hindi but was firmly opposed to its forced inclusion. Raj Thackeray also criticised the policy and urged people to stand united. 'The government should know what Maharashtra wants,' he said, calling the move a conspiracy to dilute Marathi's significance. From protest to celebration: A shift in tone While the two parties had originally planned separate protests for July 6 and 7, the cousins eventually decided to combine efforts and hold a joint rally on July 5. The government revoked both language policy GRs on June 29, following sustained backlash. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis later announced the formation of a committee under former Planning Commission member Narendra Jadhav to recommend how the three-language formula could be implemented in schools. #WATCH | Mumbai: Brothers, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray share a hug as Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are holding a joint rally as the Maharashtra government scrapped two GRs to introduce Hindi as the third language. (Source: Shiv Sena-UBT) — ANI (@ANI) July 5, 2025 The rally invitation, devoid of any party logos or symbols, was issued in the names of both Raj and Uddhav. 'Did we make the government bow down? Yes! This celebration will be yours and we were merely fighting on behalf of you,' it stated. Remarks at the rally: Political and personal Uddhav Thackeray emphasized the significance of their reunion. 'We have removed the distance between us,' he said, affirming that they were united and would remain so. Commenting on the importance of the event, he added, 'This stage was more important than our speeches.' Raj Thackeray echoed the sentiment, joking that CM Fadnavis had succeeded in doing what Balasaheb Thackeray hadn't — bringing the cousins together. He credited the rollback of the language policy to the united resistance by the Marathi-speaking public. Responding to Fadnavis's earlier comment that 'hooliganism' in the name of Marathi would not be tolerated, Uddhav said, 'If we don't get justice, then we will continue doing what he calls hooliganism.' ‘Fadnavis did what Balasaheb could not': Raj Thackeray's ironic jab at Maharashtra CM during joint rally with Uddhav
Cousins Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray organised a joint rally on July 5 where they appeared together on stage after nearly 20 years. The latter took a swipe at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, ironically stating Fadnavis reunited him and Uddhav together, an achievement which he said even Balasaheb Thackeray could not accomplish. They hosted the rally named 'Awaj Marathicha' to celebrate the Maharashtra government's reversal of a contentious plan to have Hindi as a third language from Class 1 in state schools. 'I am sharing stage with Uddhav Thackeray after almost 20 years. Chief Minister Fadnavis managed to do what Balasaheb Thackeray could not - bring myself and Uddhav together. The Maharashtra Government rolled back the decision on the three-language formula due to the strong unity shown by Marathi people. This decision was a precursor to the plan of separating Mumbai from Maharashtra," he said. Raj hit out at the Centre, asking whether Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) renowned leader LK Advani's schooling at a missionary institution sparked questions among some about the authenticity of his adherence to Hindutva ideology. He further questioned, "LK Advani studied at St. Patricks High School, a missionary school. Should we doubt his Hindutva?", according to NDTV. He specified even Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray received education at an English school and was associated with an English newspaper but 'never compromised on the status of Marathi'. 'Balasaheb Thackeray studied in English school, worked in English newspaper but never compromised on status of Marathi,' the MNS chief said. Earlier today, according to police, some unknown persons chanted slogans backing Raj and damaged the office of investor Sushil Kedia situated at Century Bazar in Worli area of Mumbai. Kedia had dared Raj Thackeray and stated that he would not study Marathi. He went to the police after he was targeted over his post on X. A police official said some men hurled stones at Kedia's office when they reached there and were raising slogans in endorsement of Marathi and lauding Raj Thackeray. The police had given enough security to his office. "I don't know Marathi properly even after living for 30 years in Mumbai & with your gross misconduct I have made it a resolve that until such people as you are allowed to pretend to be taking care of Marathi Manus I take pratigya I won't learn Marathi. Kya karna hai bol?" Kedia had said on X.
