Milan-Cortina Olympic medals unveiled - Omni sports
"We conceived a medal that represents purity and a return to essence," explained Raffaella Panie, the organising committee's brand director.
"We celebrate the strength found in difference: two unique halves that join through the Olympic and Paralympic symbols to deliver a bold and unified message.
"This concept is also reflected in the surfaces of the medals, where two textures meet and begin a story written not only by the athletes and Para athletes, but also by those who supported them: coaches, teammates, family members, and fans."
Federica Pellegrini, Italy's 200m freestyle swimming champion at the 2008 Beijing Games, was chosen to front the presentation in Venice.
The medals, 1,146 for both the Olympics and Paralympics, are 80mm in diameter and 10mm thick, with the gold medals weighing in at 500 grammes.
They were designed by the Italian national mint, the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato.
The 2026 Games will run from February 6-22, with the Paralympics taking place between March 6-15.
At last year's Paris Olympics over 200 medals became discoloured due to oxidisation, with the French mint (Monnaie de Paris) promising to replace them.

Athletics: Kenya athletics trials under shadow of Chepngetich suspension - Omni sports
Kenya held trials for the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday under the cloud of renewed doping concerns after women's marathon world record holder Ruth Chepngetich was provisionally suspended last week. Chepngetich, 30, tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide on March 14, according to the Athletics Integrity Unit. It threatens to destroy a career that has seen her win the 2019 world marathon title in Doha and set the marathon world record in Chicago last October at 2hr 09min 56sec, making her the first woman to run the distance under 2hr 10min. Her case has also cast a shadow over Kenya's preparation for the World Championships in Tokyo from September 13 to 25. Few in the Kenyan sports community have been willing to talk about the case. "It has increased suspicions that it is still a big issue. The authorities still have a lot more to do in the fight against doping," a former Kenyan world champion, who requested anonymity, told AFP. Kenya has invested massively to clean up its image after a string of doping scandals around the 2016 Rio Olympics led to it being declared non-compliant by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Nearly 130 Kenyan athletes, mainly long-distance runners, have been sanctioned for drugs offences since 2017, and Kenya has put in place a $25 million, five-year programme to attempt to combat the problem. In June 2024, Kenya handed out its first lifetime ban to marathon runner Beatrice Toroitich and a six-year ban to 10km record-holder Rhonex Kipruto. Kenyan sports lawyer Sarah Ochwada said Kenya has made significant strides. "Anti-doping is a complex system. It is a mix of bio-chemistry and medico-legal regulations," said Ochwada, who has represented several athletes suspended for doping including Rita Jeptoo, Ferdinand Omanyala, and Mark Otieno. "With more testing, the system is likely to catch both inadvertent and intentional anti-doping rule violators," she said, adding that it was up to Kenyan athletes to take "destiny into their own hands" and make sure they don't accidentally break the rules. Diuretics are banned because they can be used to rapidly lose weight or to flush out signs of performance-enhancing drugs. Athletics Kenya still has high hopes of success at the World Championships 10 years after it stunned the world by claiming the overall title for the first time in Beijing with seven golds, six silvers and three bronzes. Among the athletes expected to shine on Tuesday include rising 1,500m star Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech, the 18-year-old who upset Britain's reigning world champion Josh Kerr at the London Diamond League on Saturday. Tennis: Alcaraz withdraws from Montreal event for Wimbledon recovery - Omni sports
World number two Carlos Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, has withdrawn from next week's ATP Canadian Open in Toronto to recover from Wimbledon, organizers said on Monday. The 22-year-old Spaniard lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final earlier this month in a bid for his third consecutive crown in the grass-court classic. "I'm really sad to have to miss the National Bank Open in Toronto," Alcaraz said in a statement. "I tried my best to be ready for the tournament as it's one I really enjoy playing, but it comes just too soon for me as I recover after Wimbledon. I wish the event well and look forward to being back on the Canadian courts next year." Alcaraz had his best Canada run in 2023, falling to American Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals. Olympics: Champion Marchand to focus on medleys at worlds - Omni sports
French swimmer Leon Marchand is skipping two of the four events which brought him gold medal success at the Paris Olympics last year in the upcoming world championships in Singapore in order to challenge the 200m medley world record, his club president in Toulouse announced on Monday. Marchand was one of the standout stars of the Paris Games when he claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly as well the 200m and 400m individual medleys. However, he is now set to concentrate purely on the medley events. "He won't be doing the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke," Michel Coloma of the Dauphins du TOEC club told AFP. "He wants to see what happens in the 200m medley, without having any other races on his plate." Marchand is already the world record holder for the 400m medley, having snatched it from American legend Michael Phelps in 2023, but he now wants a crack at Ryan Lochte's 2011 record of 1min 54.00sec for the 200m medley. He came close in his Olympic final, which he won in 1min 54.06sec, setting an Olympic record in the process. Marchand will begin his world championships on July 30 with the heats of the 200m medley, with the final the next day.
