LANGKAWI - A 45-year-old man was arrested by the Malaysian police after he was involved in the daylight robbery of a goldsmith in Langkawi on June 19.
Langkawi police chief Shariman Ashari said the incident took place around 11.48am when the suspect, wearing a face mask, entered the premises and hurled chilli powder at one of the goldsmith employees.
'After disabling the victim with the chilli powder, the man proceeded to smash the display glass with a machete and grabbed a quantity of gold jewellery,' he said in a statement.
Assistant Commissioner (AC) Shariman said the suspect attempted to flee but members of the public nearby immediately gave chase.
He said the suspect was eventually subdued and arrested by policemen on patrol in the area.
AC Shariman said that initial investigations revealed the stolen jewellery was worth about RM50,000 (S$15,130).
He said the case is being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Malaysian Penal Code for robbery and armed robbery. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Two girls, aged three and 10, were among three people killed when a boat capsized off Pulau Perhentian on the night of June 28. The other victim was a 40-year-old man who was the father of the three-year-old. Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said 12 others in the boat, including a six-year-old in critical condition, were rushed to Besut Hospital for treatment. The boat, carrying 15 passengers, capsized during a storm, heavy rain and rough seas. Datuk Seri Tiong said preliminary findings showed that both the travel agency and the boat operator had violated several laws and regulations. 'These include operating with an expired licence since April, failing to ensure that passengers wore life jackets – and most alarmingly – the boatman tested positive for drugs,' he said in a statement on June 29. 'I am deeply angered and disappointed by the tragic incident off Pulau Perhentian, which resulted in three deaths and nine injuries. I have immediately instructed the ministry to conduct a thorough investigation,' he said. He said the boatman also had a record of drug-related offences. 'Hiring such a person to ferry passengers is gross negligence… and a complete disregard for human lives,' he said. The skipper was also arrested. Mr Tiong warned all tourism operators not to compromise the safety of tourists. 'Malaysia has already experienced numerous incidents that have cast a shadow over our tourism sector, damaging the country's reputation and in some cases, prompting foreign governments to issue travel warnings against certain destinations here. If left unchecked, this will severely affect our tourism industry,' he said. Mr Tiong said the ministry is also focusing on tour bus safety management, while also emphasising the need for the Maritime Enforcement Agency to closely monitor all vessels providing maritime activities. 'We are actively working towards transferring the regulatory authority over tourism-related transport vehicles from the Transport Ministry back to our tourism ministry. He did not give further details on any casualties or how the incident unfolded. 'As this situation is still developing, please stay clear from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs,' Mr Little added. Calls to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department, along with the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department, city police and Idaho state police were not returned. The Kootenai County Emergency Management office issued an alert for citizens in nearby areas to shelter in place. Forum: Stronger measures needed against smoking and littering at public parks
I have noticed more smokers lighting up in public parks, particularly near Jalan Rumah Tinggi and the ABC Market area. Many of them do so even though smoking is prohibited in public parks, and go on to litter at the same spot. Unfortunately, there is no signage at these locations indicating that smoking and littering are offences. Both carry composite fines, but since there are no clear signboards indicating that, many smokers claim ignorance when approached. When I reminded some people that smoking is not allowed, they insisted that they were unaware of the prohibition since they did not see any signboards there. This issue is especially concerning during the evenings, when families and children use the park for exercise and recreation. It is distressing to have to inhale second-hand smoke while trying to enjoy outdoor activities in what should be a smoke-free environment. For the health and well-being of all park users, especially young children playing in the playground, I urge the authorities to consider stronger enforcement measures. These could include more prominent signage, regular patrols, stricter fines, and public education campaigns. I look forward to seeing meaningful action taken towards achieving a healthier and cleaner Singapore.
