Boycott Turkey: From JNU to IIT Bombay — Indian universities snap ties with Turkish institutes over support for Pakistan
According to news agency PTI, the institute currently has a faculty exchange programme with some Turkish institutions. IIT Bombay said it is suspending ties 'due to the current geopolitical situation involving Turkey.'
Earlier, IIT Roorkee formally cancelled a memorandum of understanding with Inonu University, Turkey. "The Institute remains committed to fostering global collaborations that reflect its academic priorities and uphold national interest," IIT Roorkee had posted on X.
Private institutes like Chandigarh University have also severed their academic collaborations with 23 Turkish and Azerbaijani universities over support for Pakistan during 'Operation Sindoor', PTI reported.
Lovely Professional University, based in Punjab's Jalandhar, was the first private university in India to terminate its association with institutions in Turkiye and Azerbaijan.
LPU terminated all memorandum of understanding with institutions in Turkiye and Azerbaijan, citing recent geopolitical developments that it deems contrary to India's national interest.
"When our brave armed forces are risking their lives -- whether in covert operations, air defence, or patrolling our borders -- we, as an institution, cannot remain indifferent. LPU's mission has always been aligned with the growth and integrity of India, and we will never associate with any institution that undermines India's sovereignty," LPU Founder Chancellor and Rajya Sabha member Ashok Kumar Mittal was quoted by news agency ANI as saying.
The decision includes the immediate termination of student and faculty exchange programmes, joint research projects, dual degree initiatives and all other forms of academic collaboration with institutions from the two countries.
Other colleges, educational institutions boycotting Turkey, Azerbaijan
The following institutions are among those that have suspended their agreements with Turkey and Azerbaijan:
1. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU): In a statement posted on X, JNU said, "Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Turkiye stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation."
2. Jamia Millia Islamia: Professor Saima Saeed, PRO of Jamia Millia Islamia, told ANI, ' We have suspended all MoUs with institutions affiliated with Turkey. Jamia stands with the nation and the Government of India.'
3. Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad: MANUU, a central university, announced cancelling the arrangement with Yunus Emre Institute, Turkiye for a diploma course, with immediate effect.
4. Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur: CSJMU announced the immediate termination of its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Istanbul University, Turkiye, officials said.
Meanwhile, the University of Delhi said on May 14 that it is reviewing its international academic partnerships. "We are examining all the MoUs, and we will take a decision only after reviewing the agreements," a senior DU official told PTI.
Several Indians claimed to have boycotted Turkish goods and cancelled their trips to the West Asian country. Online travel platforms, such as EaseMyTrip and Ixigo, also issued advisories against visiting these nations.
Several trade bodies have given a call to boycott Turkish products. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) had on Friday announced a complete boycott of trade with Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Meanwhile, Indian universities, including the JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia, have suspended their agreements with the two countries.
The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) announced that it has discontinued the ground-handling services of Turkish company Celebi Airport Services India Private Limited, in compliance with the recent directives of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) with regard to national security.
The developments came against the backdrop of Turkiye backing Pakistan and its condemnation of India's strikes on terror camps in the neighbouring country and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under Operation Sindoor.
Pakistan also used Turkish drones on a large scale during the military conflict with India. Azerbaijan had also actively supported Pakistan in the conflict.

A senior Russian lawmaker has said that Russia has enough nuclear submarines at sea to handle any potential threat from the two US subs ordered into position by President Donald Trump, news agency PTI reported. Viktor Vodolatsky, a member of the Russian Parliament (Duma), told state news agency TASS that there is no need for a response from Russia to Trump's decision. "The number of Russian nuclear submarines in the world's oceans is significantly higher than the American ones, and the subs that US President Donald Trump ordered to be redirected to the appropriate regions have long been under their control,' he said. 'So no response from the Russian Federation to the American leader's statement about the submarines is required." Vodolatsky also said: 'Let the two US subs sail, they have been in the crosshairs for a long time now.' Trump orders US nuclear submarines on alert On Friday, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that he had ordered the movement of two US nuclear submarines to 'appropriate regions'. He said the decision was in response to what he described as 'extremely provocative statements' made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council. In his post, Trump wrote: 'Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev... I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that." Russian minister backs peaceful approach, warns against direct conflict Responding to comments made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a Fox News interview, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed the US position that a direct military clash with Russia must be avoided. 'We wholeheartedly concur with this position. Such shared understanding has been facilitated through constructive Russian-American dialogue,' Lavrov said. 'While Europeans are hysterically pushing for Ukraine's integration into NATO... Marco Rubio recently reaffirmed a responsible stance, explicitly stating that a direct military confrontation between the United States and Russia must be avoided," he said. Trump slams Medvedev, India and Russia In another post on Thursday, Trump attacked both India and Russia, calling them 'dead economies' and suggesting they could 'take their dead economies down together'. He also criticised Medvedev. 'Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way. Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President, to watch his words. He's entering very dangerous territory!' Trump said. In response, Medvedev dismissed Trump's remarks, saying they showed nervousness. 'If some words from the former president of Russia cause such a nervous reaction from the supposedly mighty president of the US, then Russia is doing everything right,' he wrote on Telegram. He also reminded Trump of Russia's Cold War-era nuclear capability, designed to retaliate even if the country's leadership were destroyed in a first strike. Mocking Trump's interest in pop culture, Medvedev added: 'He should remember his favourite films about 'The Walking Dead' and think about how dangerous a 'dead hand' can be, even one that doesn't exist in nature,' ending his post with a laughing emoji. PCB issues ban on ‘Pakistan' name in private cricket after WCL 2025 fiasco: Report
Following the embarrassment faced by the Pakistan Legends side in the World Championship of Legends, the Pakistan Cricket Board has reportedly decided to ban all private cricket leagues from using the country's name, according to a recent report. The decision by the PCB comes shortly after India Champions refused to play with their Pakistani counterparts in the semi-final of the tournament in Birmingham. Prior to the semi-final clash, Indian players like Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh had also opted out of the league stage match against the arch-rivals. The cricketers attributed the decision to the rising geopolitical tensions between the two countries, especially in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing Operation Sindoor launched by the Indian armed forces. With India boycotting the semi-final clash against Pakistan, the neighbours had qualified for the final match. If a report by Telecom Asia Sport is to be believed, the Pakistan Legends side has been allowed to play the final match against South Africa on Saturday, but the PCB has made it clear that no future teams or leagues will be permitted to use the 'Pakistan' name without formal clearance by the cricket board. The decision was reportedly taken by the PCB after an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors after India Champions refused to take the field twice against Pakistan. 'The decision was taken after a detailed discussion in the Board of Directors meeting on Thursday. The high-level authorities felt Indian players refusing to play Pakistan in the WCL's second edition twice was hurtful to the name of the country," quoted a source as saying. 'Going forward, no private organisation will be allowed to use the country's name in any capacity unless the PCB verifies the league's legitimacy and reputation. All violators will face legal action,' it added. Mint could not independently verify the report. After the cancellation of the semi-final match, WCL had issued a statement writing, 'At WCL, we have always believed in the power of sport to inspire and bring about positive change in the world. However, public sentiment must always be respected — after all, everything we do is for our audience,' the WCL statement read. 'We respect the India Champions' decision to withdraw from the semi-finals, and we equally respect the Pakistan Champions' readiness to compete. Taking all factors into consideration, the match between the India Champions and the Pakistan Champions has been called off,' it added.
