What The June 28 European Accessibility Act Deadline Means For Brands

In less than a week from now, on June 28, 2025, the requirements of the European Accessibility Act come into force. The intention behind the EAA is to provide fair and equitable access to digital products to the more than 100 million consumers with disabilities living across the European Union.
One of the key things to keep in mind about the EEA is that it doesn't just affect European companies. It applies to any organization from around the world selling into the EU market. It goes beyond standard web accessibility and e-commerce, incorporating areas such as computers and operating systems, smartphones, digital TV services, ATMS, ticketing machines and other digital kiosks within its remit. The legislation requires companies to do more than simply make digital products and content accessible. Instead, it seeks to embed accessibility commitments and best practices at a more fundamental organizational level through requirements like official accessibility statements and providing specialized training to staff.
Non-compliance with the EAA can lead to fines and ultimately the termination of EU market access.
The proximity of the deadline may for some be a cause for panic but cutting through the noise, here are what some digital accessibility specialists are urging organizations to keep in mind with less than a week to go:
It's still not too late to get started
'It's not too late to start addressing accessibility. Starting now is better than not doing anything about EAA compliance,' says Jon Avila, Chief Accessibility Officer at Level Access, one of the leading providers of digital accessibility services in the United States.
Avila continues, 'For organizations just getting started, the most important steps to take now to mitigate risk are demonstrating that you're taking action to make sustained progress, and beginning to put processes in place aligned with EAA requirements. One of the biggest gaps we observe is third-party content. Companies often assume that embedded tools or plugins are outside their responsibility, but under the EAA, they're very much in scope. We recommend that organizations make accessibility a requirement during the procurement process and request documented proof of accessibility (e.g., a completed VPAT report) from vendors prior to making a purchase.'
Eric Portis, a Developer Evangelist at Cloudinary, a software company that helps organizations manage their visual content online, also agrees that it's still not too late to get started with EAA compliance.
'The best time to consider the accessibility of a project was before you shipped it, but the second-best time is today. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are just a big checklist. And while checking every item off the list before June is not a realistic goal for many teams, everyone can start tackling an item or two and begin building momentum towards full compliance. All progress is good progress,' Portis says.
The AI landscape has changed
Back in 2020, when AI website accessibility overlay widgets hit the market, they were met with a degree of skepticism. That's because the marketing claims were bold – buy a software subscription and let AI do its magic in both spotting and fixing accessibility fails, saving you time and money. It quickly became widely accepted that the technology was, in fact, nowhere near ready to entirely replace human oversight for accessibility remediation.
Fast forward five years, and the same remains true but the technology has undoubtedly gotten a lot better meaning that, though AI won't solve all digital accessibility issues, it can now do a lot more of the heavy lifting which genuinely allows teams to focus more precisely on the more nuanced human elements related to user experience.
What this ultimately means for the market was recently brought into sharp relief in a report authored by AAAnow, leading digital compliance benchmarking specialists based in London.
AAAnow's report looked at the websites of organizations comprising The Valuable 500, a collective of some of the most profitable companies on the planet with long-standing pledges to accessibility and inclusion, including the likes of Apple, Google and BP. According to the V500 scorecard, the average member organization manages around 178 websites, each comprising around 211 pages. To remediate accessibility on the average of 85% of pages where it is required would take 3,480 workdays, or 13 full-time staff working for a year (per org). In terms of cost, this equates to $767,000 per company just for initial compliance, let alone maintenance. Scaled across the full Valuable 500, that's over $380 million and 9 years of full-time work at current capacity.
'We argue that only a risk-managed, AI-powered approach can address the scale, cost, and operational complexity. It's not a 'nice-to-have' - it's fundamental,' commented AAAnow CEO Lawrence Shaw in an earlier interview.
Regulation is not something to fear
Instinctively, when any type of new regulation comes into force, particularly one that potentially involves fines and other punitive measures, fear and trepidation tend to be the most common reactions off the bat.
Yet, it can be argued that brands should welcome the new regulations from the EU as they provide clarity and a roadmap into areas of technical compliance that have previously been murky.
In a recent company press release, Amit Borsok, CEO of Italy-based Accessiway, which takes an end-to-end approach to accessibility remediation involving both automation and human testers, said, 'European regulations have shifted the narrative around accessibility from a compliance issue to a strategic investment. Until now, regulatory fragmentation across member states has prevented companies from fully capitalizing on this potential, increasing compliance costs and limiting competitiveness.
'Now, instead of being a hurdle, the new framework provides clarity that encourages companies to invest in accessible technologies and services to expand their market reach. For many organizations, accessibility has evolved from a nice-to-have to a competitive necessity. With regulation now offering predictability and standardization, uncertainty is reduced for investors, and new opportunities for innovation are unlocked.'
Though the word deadline usually implies finality, whether, as an organization, you are right at the start of your digital accessibility journey and anxiously playing catch-up, or significantly further down the line, June 28 will surely be the opening of a new chapter for all involved. The story about to unfold will be one of whether human intention layered onto ever more advanced technology can ultimately help make access to the digital realm an equitable experience for everyone.

Refresco CEO Hans Roelofs will step down in August, concluding an 18-year tenure with the Netherlands-based drinks manufacturer. In a statement issued yesterday (26 June), Refresco, majority-owned by private-equity firm KKR, said it had started a search for a new chief executive. Refresco supervisory board chairman and KKR partner James Cunningham thanked Roelofs for "positioning Refresco for continued success in the years to come as we continue to expand the company's footprint'. Roelofs joined Refresco in 2007 after spells at meat group Dumeco and agri-food business Nutreco. Through M&A and organic growth, Refresco is now a company with operations in 13 countries. The business has 75 manufacturing sites and employs more than 14,000 staff. KKR invested in the group in 2022. Reflecting on his decision to retire, Roelofs said: 'This is the right time for me to step back, confident that the company will continue to grow and thrive on its unique entrepreneurial spirit and the agility of its people.' In 2024, Refresco generated revenue of €5.99bn ($x), up 1% on a year earlier. The volume of drinks sold stood at 13.83bn litres, down from 14.25bn litres in 2023. Some 26% of the company's volumes were carbonated soft drinks, with another 26% generated through water products. Sport and energy drinks accounted for 15%. Earlier this month, Refresco agreed to acquire Norway-based soft-drinks manufacturer Telemark Kildevann (TKV). TKV operates two production facilities in the Norwegian towns of Fyresdal and Aurskog and supplies products to retailers and branded customers in Norway and Sweden. Last year, Refresco snapped up Spanish plant-based beverage maker Frías Nutrición, purchased a production site from German beverage group Berentzen-Gruppe and bought US-based VBC Bottling Company, a fellow contract manufacturer. In May last year, Rotterdam-based Refresco opened its first European plant-based production line in Germany, marking an entry into the oat drinks' market. As part of the deal for the Berentzen-Gruppe facility, Refresco also bought the mineral-water brands Märkisch Kristall and Grüneberg Quelle. Commending Roelofs' leadership, Refresco supervisory board member and PAI managing partner Frédéric Stévenin said: 'Refresco went through a period of unprecedented growth and transformation." Sir Keir Starmer has said he did not get to grips with the growing rebellion over welfare reforms earlier as he was focused on international affairs. He also said he took ownership for his decisions and believed as leader he should 'carry the can' when things do not go well. The Prime Minister said he was occupied with the G7 and Nato summits and the escalating tensions in the Middle East for much of the past two weeks. He said he was 'heavily focused' on what was happening with Nato and the Middle East all weekend and that his 'full attention really bore down' on the welfare bill on Thursday. He defended the eventual U-turn, which came after more than 100 MPs launched a bid to kill the legislation with an amendment. 'Getting it right is more important than ploughing on with a package which doesn't necessarily achieve the desired outcome,' Sir Keir told The Sunday Times. He said all the decisions were his and that 'I take ownership of them'. There have been reports that rebel MPs blamed Sir Keir's chief of staff Morgan McSweeney for the Government's approach. Sir Keir said: 'My rule of leadership is, when things go well you get the plaudits; when things don't go well you carry the can. 'I take responsibility for all the decisions made by this government. I do not talk about staff and I'd much prefer it if everybody else didn't.' Ministers had hoped the reforms would get more people back into work and save up to £5 billion a year, but the concessions made leave Chancellor Rachel Reeves needing to find money elsewhere and point to possible tax rises in the autumn. On Saturday, the Prime Minister told the Welsh Labour conference the 'broken' welfare system must be fixed 'in a Labour way'. He said: 'We cannot take away the safety net that vulnerable people rely on, and we won't, but we also can't let it become a snare for those who can and want to work.' Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch will hit out at Sir Keir as 'incapable of sticking to a decision' after he backed down on his plans. The reforms would only have made 'modest reductions to the ballooning welfare bill', but the Prime Minister was 'too weak to hold the line', the Conservative Party leader is expected to say in a speech next week. The Government's original welfare package had restricted eligibility for Pip, the main disability payment in England, as well as cutting the health-related element of universal credit. Existing recipients were to be given a 13-week phase-out period of financial support in an earlier move that was seen as a bid to head off opposition. Now, the changes to Pip will be implemented in November 2026 and apply to new claimants only, while all existing recipients of the health element of universal credit will have their incomes protected in real terms. The concessions on Pip alone protect some 370,000 people currently receiving the allowance who were set to lose out following reassessment. As a year in office nears, more than half of voters think Labour has underperformed in that time, polling released on Saturday showed. The Opinium survey showed 54% think Labour has done a worse job than expected, while 18% think the party has exceeded expectations.

Aston Martin sues Italian supplier for freezing deliveries

Aston Martin has sued a key supplier that halted deliveries fearing that the carmaker would not pay its bills. Warwickshire-based Aston Martin has been forced to take legal action against IMR Industries after the Italian manufacturer stopped deliveries of vital components. IMR, which also supplies the likes of Ferrari and Maserati, is understood to have ceased shipments because of concerns that Aston Martin's financial troubles would leave it unable to pay for the parts delivered. A source close to Aston Martin insisted the company always paid its suppliers on time. It comes as Aston Martin, which is overseen by billionaire Lawrence Stroll, battles to stem years of losses and get debts under control. Like other carmakers, the luxury marque has also been buffeted by Donald Trump's tariffs on vehicle imports, which prompted the company to temporarily suspend deliveries to the US this year. IMR is understood to have stopped delivering parts to Aston Martin around a fortnight ago. Production has so far been unaffected by the disruption thanks to sufficient stockpiles. However, Aston Martin has now taken legal action against IMR, filing a lawsuit for breach of contract in the UK's High Court on June 19. An initial hearing was held last Thursday, where the case was adjourned while IMR builds its defence. But a High Court judge issued a temporary injunction ordering IMR Industries to restart deliveries. Aston Martin has received supplies in the days since. The carmaker is now seeking a permanent injunction to force IMR Industries to continue making deliveries for the remaining period of the contract. Aston Martin has enlisted lawyers from City firm Gowling WLG to make its case. A spokesman for Aston Martin said: 'In keeping with Aston Martin policy, we do not comment on ongoing litigation.' IMR Industries and Gowling WLG were contacted for comment. IMR was founded 60 years ago and has two sites based near Milan and Pescara in southern Italy. The manufacturer, which employs around 1,300 staff across six plants, makes exterior parts used on luxury cars as well as interior leather trims. Clients include Bentley, Ferrari, Maserati, BMW and Porsche. Aston Martin has a multi-year contract with IMR to supply components, including both body and interior parts. The clash comes as Aston Martin struggles to find a firm footing for its business. Shares have lost more than 90pc of their value since the company first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2018 and Aston Martin has been through a succession of chief executives, each of whom has struggled to find a path to profitability. Aston Martin issued back-to-back profits last year, blamed on issues with its supply chains and an economic slowdown in China. The company lost £289m last year and saw its debts jump by 43pc to £1.1bn. It has also been severely affected by Mr Trump's 25pc tariffs on all cars and car parts imported into the US. The levies caused Aston Martin to temporarily pause all shipments to America, a key market, for a month. In February, Aston Martin outlined plans to cut 170 jobs in a bid to reduce its costs by £25m a year. It has also outlined plans to sell its stake in the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team for £125m to help reduce its debts. The British carmaker, which was founded in 1913 and is known for its association with James Bond, is aiming to turn around its performance by ironing out issues with production that have dogged the business. Adrian Hallmark, the chief executive who formerly ran Bentley, said this year his focus was on 'operational execution and delivering financial sustainability'.
