
Rap Battle: How Gilbert O'Sullivan changed hip hop forever
Gilbert O'Sullivan's song 'Alone Again (Naturally)' was released in Ireland and the UK in early 1972.
At the same time, though, on the other side of the Atlantic in New York (and, it should be said, completely disconnected from Gilbert O'Sullivan) there was a new musical movement taking shape.
Eventually developing into what we now know as hip hop, the genre was initially referred to by some as 'disco rap' – which does tell you a lot about its origins. Because much of the scene developed out of DJs taking popular disco and funk records and messing around with them on turntables – slowing them down, speeding them up, looping parts of them, mixing different records together. And, in doing so, they creating something that sounded totally different.
And because disco wasn't very lyrics-heavy, there were also big gaps in these creations, which ended up being filled by the likes of beat boxers and then rappers.
And this all started out as an underground movement – it would be individual DJs crafting these things, often on the fly at block parties and night clubs, and they were constantly developing new sounds and finding new techniques that would give different results.
This scene continues to develop over the course of the 70s and, as mixing and recording technology improves, it allows for the sound to become more elaborate. That means you go from a DJ blending two records together on their turntable to pieces of music that perhaps contain a beat from one song, some strings from another, a hook or a refrain from somewhere else altogether, a small snippet of backing singers from another song – and all looped. And then a rapper adds their original vocals on top of that.
And in a lot of ways you can argue that this practice of taking existing music and re-working it is quite similar, in spirit at least, to the folk tradition that was also thriving in New York at the time. That also saw artists borrowing tunes and even lyrics from traditional and new songs, incorporating them into something new, or putting a twist on them, and making their own song out of it.
But then money comes along, and things start to change...
Yes – because all of this "borrowing" of beats and music is fine when you're talking about what is essentially an informal and fairly niche movement like this. In the early days artists probably didn't even know their music was being used like this and, even if they did, it's not like anyone was making much of a profit off it.
But as hip hop develops into a fully-fledged genre through the 70s and into the 80s, record labels start to take notice, and money starts to be made, things start to change.
For example, The Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight', which came out in 1979, is seen by many to be the first mainstream hit from the genre. But the music from that song is basically two existing tracks mixed together – Chic's 'Good Times' and Love De-Luxe's 'Here Comes That Sound Again'. And The Sugarhill Gang's management initially released the song without crediting anyone else - until Nile Rodgers happened to hear an early version in a nightclub, threatened to sue, and got his name added to the credits.
Though in that case at least the music was actually an interpolation rather than a sample – in other words they recorded new music that sounded the same, rather than just playing the original and rapping over it.
And that idea of copying other people's compositions isn't new – so there was some kind of precedent there for dealing with it when it happens. But in the 70s and even into the 80s, actually sampling from another song is still new, people didn't really know how it should be dealt with.
Because it goes without saying that, if someone copies another song's tune entirely, there's a copyright issue there. But if they take a two second long fragment of a song and loop it – to the point that it's not even recognisable – does that count as copyright infringement too? What if it's one of 20 such samples in a song? What happens then?
So the arrival of sample-heavy hip hop creates this kind of no-man's land where other people's work is being used left, right and centre – entire songs are often built up of existing pieces of music that are cobbled together – but the creators of those pieces aren't getting credited, or compensated in any way.
The Beastie Boy's 1989 album 'Paul's Boutique', for example takes samples from 105 songs – with one track alone having samples from 24 other songs. Most of those were used without permission.
So where does Gilbert O'Sullivan come into this?
In 1990, a rapper called Biz Markie is working on his third studio album – and one of the songs he plans to put on it is called 'Alone Again'.
And in it, he loops the piano part from the intro of the Gilbert O'Sullivan song of a similar name and then, in between rap verses, he sings 'alone again, naturally' in the chorus.
So it's very clear where he got the inspiration for his track from – and, in fairness, his label did write to Gilbert O'Sullivan to ask for his blessing in using the sample from his song.
O'Sullivan told them he wanted to hear the song before he will give it his blessing, so they sent it to him. He then listened to it, decides he doesn't want his sample to be used, and turns down their request.
But despite that Biz Markie decides to leaves the track – and its sample - on the album, which is released in 1991.
Maybe he thought that would be the end of it – his 'Alone Again' song follows a very similar template to the big hit on his previous album 'Just a Friend', which was based on a song called 'Got What I Need' by Freddie Scott. Scott wasn't credited on that track and that didn't seem to result in any lawsuits.
But O'Sullivan clearly had a different attitude to Scott - and sues Biz Markie's record label. The court rules in O'Sullivan's favour – saying the unauthorised use of song samples constitutes copyright infringement.
The label is ordered to pay $250,000 – and forced to halt sales of the album, which is obviously costly too.
And what really goes against Biz Markie is the fact that he asked for permission first – and when that wasn't given, he went ahead and used it anyway. So he couldn't really pretend to be ignorant of the need to get the original artist's approval.
He also seemed to get a particularly hardline judge in Kevin Thomas Duffy. He quoted the Bible in his ruling – and even referred the case to the criminal courts, because he saw Markie as a thief... though no criminal case ever took place.
Gilbert O'Sullivan's case wasn't the first attempt by an artist or record label to go the legal route to resolve a row around sampling – there would have been plenty of cases settled out of court, some cases would have been tied up in the courts at the time. But O'Sullivan's is the first one to secure a ruling.
And so it became the industry precedent – and it set the bar for everything that came after it.
So what impact did it have on the music industry?
Well one immediate impact it had was the name of Biz Markie's next album – which he called 'All Samples Cleared'.
But more significantly it really had a chilling effect on the practice of building songs out of countless samples – because suddenly there was a significant price to be paid if you did so without permission. And as it had been officially deemed copyright infringement, the copyright holders would have a right to be compensated for any use, and they have the right to refuse.
If you look at that Beastie Boys album 'Paul's Boutique', with 104 songs sampled – some of those samples were approved but many weren't, and it's estimated that it would have added millions of dollars to the cost of the production if they had to pay for each of them. Realistically, that album never would have been made if the ruling had come a few years earlier.
And you see the style of hip hop production shifting very quickly – from that sample-heavy example of 'Paul's Boutique' in 1989, to a much lighter approach by the likes of Dr Dre with 'The Chronic' in 1992.
He tended to use only a handful of samples, often from artists he knew were okay with their stuff being reworked, and then he'd add in his own instrumentation around that. And that kind of became the new template for hip hop – which continues all the way through to today.
And even though the ruling was made more than 30 years ago, there are other ways that it's continuing to shape the music industry.
How?
Well two consequences – one perhaps intended, the other probably unintended.
The intended one is that we're now seeing more people being given a credit on modern pop and hip hop songs.
Beyoncé got a lot of criticism for the fact that her Renaissance album had a total of 104 writers credited across its 16 tracks... one song in particular, 'Alien Superstar', has 24 writers credited.
And part of that is because Beyoncé collaborates with a lot of writers and artists. But part of it is because she also uses lots of samples in her songs and now, when you use a song sample, the creators of that song get a credit on your song. So you might have cases now where an artist uses three samples in a song, each one from a song with two writers. And that means you have to add six names to your writing credits.
Among the 'Alien Superstar' credits, for example, are Richard and Christopher Fairbrass. Most people won't know who they are – but they probably will know some of their music. Because Richard and Christopher Fairbrass are better known as Right Said Fred, and their song 'I'm Too Sexy' was the inspiration for the chorus of that particular Beyoncé song. So they both got a writing credit (and a few quid too).
The other unintended consequence of the Biz Markie ruling is that pursuing writing credits has kind of become a sub-industry in its own right.
There are now a number of companies who's whole business model is to buy up the rights to the music of niche or obscure, older artists. They then hunt down cases where their songs were sampled without permission, and file lawsuits looking for compensation.
And sometimes the samples are so small, or they've been so heavily reworked, that they're nearly unidentifiable – so they use special software to analyse songs to find potential samples. In other cases it takes them getting the stems from the original recordings so they can listen to the various tracks in isolation and identify what the parts are made from.
And, surprise surprise, Paul's Boutique is one of the albums that's been targeted by these types of companies. And it may not even matter how long ago the sample was used without permission - because as long as new versions and special editions of an album keeps getting released, the statute of limitations on a case keeps getting reset.

He brought Gilbert O'Sullivan to Limerick to the Savoy Theatre. I loved his quirky lyrics, and his melodies. He sang in flats rather than in major at times. He's had such great songs – Nothing Rhymed; Clair; Matrimony. Imagine – Alone Again (Naturally) was the second biggest selling single in the United States in 1972. Thin Lizzy Thin Lizzy at Cork City Hall. Picture: Eddie O'Hare When I was about 15, one of the first acts my brother brought to Limerick was Thin Lizzy. They played in St John's Pavilion. I'd never been so excited, but then my mother wouldn't let me go, after my brother had me out on the streets of Limerick selling tickets for the gig on a little tray. He brought them back to Drumkeen Ballroom in Limerick in 1980. There were about 3,500 at it. I went to that gig. I got to meet Phillo and chat to him. It was their last Irish tour. Phillo right up front was so energetic, so powerful, an amazing front man, and the twin guitars, the songs – they were great. Horslips The best gigs from my youth were Horslips playing in Limerick's Savoy with a local band, Reform, in support. Horslips had the stage dark. Johnny Fean would come out. They'd put the lights on him, and when he did that riff for Dearg Doom, the place went mental. When they played concert venues, people would jump up on the seats, or they'd be in the aisles dancing, going mad. Trouble (With a Capital 'T'), with Jim Lockheart playing the pipes, was amazing. The girls loved Charles O'Connor, the band's sex symbol. He used to wear a hairy-chest T-shirt. Early U2 In college, I was a 'humper' for my brothers' gigs in Limerick. For U2's first tour with Out of Control, he had them in the Crescent Theatre in Limerick. It was about 1979. It was their first paying gig in Limerick – after the famous Stella Ballroom competition they won in Limerick. About 90 people turned up and they all ended up on stage with Bono playing air guitars. They were new to me. It was a great night. Peaky Blinders Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders. I love the lads in Birmingham, Peaky Blinders. I could hum the theme tune for it no bother. The acting is fantastic. It takes you right back to that eerie time in England. You really feel like you were there – the intensity of it. It's grim and brutal at times. Some of the scenes would make the hair stand up on the back of your head. It's very good. Yellowstone I've really enjoyed Yellowstone. It's like Dallas without the oil. Kevin Costner is a super actor. There are two prequels to it – they decided to go back in time. One is set in 1883, one in 1923. I've watched them all. One is better than the other. They're superb. Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. I love Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin's work with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He was a champion of bringing traditional music into the classical vein. An amazing man, with his mind, and with the drive he had – he founded, of course, the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at University of Limerick. He was a wonderful composer; people were drawn to his sound. Planxty To this day, I'd list as one of my favourite pieces of music a Planxty piece called Timedance they did for the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest. Bill Whelan and Dónal Lunny composed it specifically for the interval act. I bought two copies of the 12-inch. I play it on Lyric FM from time to time. Bill Whelan I love Bill Whelan's concertos, Linen and Lace. They're superb. Bill can infuse classical symphonic works with traditional Irish music. Hence why someone like, say, Zoë Conway can play Inishlacken with a concert orchestra. I enjoy all of Bill Whelan's works. He's under scored. He's such a talented man. Martin Hayes I love Peggy's Dream by Martin Hayes & The Common Ground Ensemble. There's a lot of nostalgia around Peggy's Dream with the dedication of the album [to his mother and his friend and music partner Dennis Cahill]. The line-up of musicians on it is extraordinary. They're amazing musicians. Bach's Goldberg Variations I love Bach's Goldberg Variations. Different variations of it come out from time to time. The pianist Glenn Gould has done an interpretation of it. The most recent, and one of my favourites, is by an Icelandic pianist, Víkingur Ólafsson. His Goldberg Variations are fantastic. Beethoven Growing up, we had a piano in the house. We all played. My mother had seven kids, my granny and two dogs in the house. You always knew when she needed to take time out because you'd hear Beethoven's Für Elise. It was like a jingle in my head for years. When I hear that now it brings me straight back to my mom. John O'Conor, who I've had perform Beethoven's piano concertos live in the studio, has a lovely version of the Für Elise. 1916 I like the 1916 documentaries RTÉ have done, particularly since the centenary, because my grandfather was very involved in 1916. He was an assistant engineer in the GPO at the time. He worked undercover, in intelligence. He donned the uniform. He was an officer back in 1916. He took the flag off the English Custom House. When Francis Sheehy-Skeffington was murdered, later, he gave the brick that held the bullet encasing in it from the firing squad that killed him, to his widow, Hanna. There are pictures of him with Dev on the back of a motorbike. Joe Duffy told some great stories in his book Children of the Rising: The Untold Story of the Young Lives Lost During Easter 1916. He did a lot of research, and he gave a different perspective on the Rising. He had an interesting take on it, examining kids who were neglected on the streets of Dublin. Night Over Water I'm a big fan of Ken Follett's fiction. His research is very good. He's a bit of espionage, intelligence and crime fiction in his books. I love his book Night Over Water, which is about the flying boat between America and London, which had to stop in Foynes in Limerick. Hence the Foynes Museum. All the big, wealthy American celebrities used to stop at Foynes to get out and get a bit of fresh air, and that, having flown across the Atlantic. He's great stories about it in the book. Rod Stewart suffers awkward moment on Glastonbury stage as guest doesn't appear
Sunday is upon us at Glastonbury after an eventful weekend of music and mayhem. But the drama isn't over, with Glastonbury bosses this morning slamming Bob Vylan's 'Death to IDF' chants on stage, declaring the punk rap duo had "crossed the line". It comes as police confirmed yesterday that they are investigating the footage. Tonight, Rod Stewart is set to perform in the legends spot, with final headliner Olivia Rodrigo bringing an end to the festival. It comes at an awkward time for Rod after fellow singer Kate Nash lashed out at the legend on Saturday evening. He made some surprise comments back in 2023 about retiring, where he said: "I'm not retiring. But I want to move on. I had great success with The Great American Songbook, all-American standards, and I've just done a swing album with Jools Holland, which is going to come out next year, so I want to go in that direction. I just want to leave all the rock 'n' roll stuff behind — for a while, maybe." Nile has worked with many artists over the years and namedropped just a few as he reeled off some of their biggest hits. Diana Ross, David Bowie and Daft Punk were all mentioned as Nile and Chic sang I'm Coming Out and Upside Down. Of course, Nile Rodgers and Chic have opened with their song Le Freak. Even the security are all getting involved, as they dance to the song in their bright blue polo shirts. Nile then segues into Everybody Dance, their 1977 hit. Nile Rodgers and Chic will be next on the Pyramid Stage, with their set beginning in just over 10 minutes time. The group have been performing around the UK as of late and are heading to Glastonbury this afternoon for what promises to be an exciting set ahead! Sir Rod Stewart made sure to roll back the years to his adoring Glastonbury crowd on Sunday, but he had to let his backing singers take over midway through his set Straight after entertaining with his rendition of Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, Rod told the crowd: "The girls are going to do a song for you while I change my shirt." He swiftly made an exit leaving fans surprised. Read more here. Rod was due to finish at 5.15pm but he kept going a little over his time. "We have got to get off the stage soon, we are done," he tells the crowd before singing hit track Sailing. He also thanked all his celebrity guests. After that awkward moment, Lulu has appeared to sing with Rod. The pair headed out to see the crowd as they sang with one another, with Rod even stopping to help Lulu walking down the stairs. They sang Hot Legs together. Rod is now in a green suit as he welcomes Ronnie Wood and Lulu onto the stage. However, things turned a bit awkward when Rod stopped and said 'oh Lulu is coming on in a bit' as Ronnie grabbed his guitar and played for the huge Glastonbury crowd. As Rod promised, Mick arrived on stage for a duet of If You Don't Know Me By Now. Rod and Mick sang the hit song together, with Mick looking very casual in his dark blue t-shirt and light blue washed jeans compared to Rod's bright pink suit. Rod has decided to take a quick break to change his shirt. "The girls are going to do a song for you while a change my shirt," he told fans in the crowd as the band broke into a rendition of Lady Marmalade. Rod soon returned to the stage in a full pink suit. There was an emotional tribute to Christine McVie as Rod projected her face on the big screen at Glastonbury. He also teased there would be special guests on later before revealing that Ronnie Wood, Mick Hucknall & Lulu would be joining him in the final half an hour or so of his set. Rod made a bit of an error with his opening for Maggie May, coming in too early. But that didn't stop fans from singing along to Rod. With the biggest reaction so far, Rod's track Maggie May had the whole of the huge Glastonbury crowd singing along. Rod continued to thank fans for coming to his set and said he was really enjoying himself. He told fans: "There's been a lot of the Middle East recently quite rightly so. I want to draw your attention to Ukraine," before performing Love Train. He regularly pays tribute to Ukraine in his sets. The star - who has housed refugees from the country in the UK - usually dedicates his 1991 anti-war song Rhythm of My Heart to Ukraine but chose a different song today. After finishing his first song, Rod told the crowd that music brings us together. "Enjoy yourselves ladies and gentlemen, music brings us together, " he told the huge crowd. Yes, really! Rod Stewart has arrived on stage to huge cheers from the packed out crowd at the Pyramid Stage. He opened his set with Tonight I'm Yours. Rod wore a black jacket emblazoned with gold for his headline set as women danced in the background with red sequin dresses. Sir Rod Stewart will soon be gracing the Pyramid Stage. The Foundations hitmaker, who was headlining the Left Field tent at Glastonbury Festival on Saturday night, appeared to slam Harry Potter author Rowling on stage. She told the audience: "The loudest feminist voice in the UK is currently transphobic and that is something that I take very f****** personally, as a feminist and a feminist with trans friends in my life, trans people that I love and that are very important to me. "Dismantling systems of oppression lies at the very core of feminism, so transphobia is not f****** feminist. And just because you're a f******* millionaire and a f****** bully with an army of trolls on the f****** internet. "I don't give a f*** mate. I don't give a s*** about the hundreds, if not thousands of comments, that I've been receiving from trolls since I penned my essay, released it into a song. It's called Germ." Laying into music bosses next - and Denise Welch, who was at the festival supporting her son Matty Healy's band The 1975 - Kate continued: "The music industry doesn't know what to do with me. They tried to get rid of me, but they didn't. There is a record executive sweating their t*** off with Matt Healy's mum. "They're scared of me. I like that. But I was made of mother f****** Bricks. But they didn't believe me. I even gave them a second warning a few years later when I told them 'Do not underestimate the girl'. Is it my fault they didn't believe me? "I'm not going to give my third warning. It's too late for that. I'm taking my bricks and I'm throwing them through the f****** window.' Launching into her song D***head, she said: "F*** Rod Stewart. This one [Why You Being A D****head For] goes out to Keir Starmer, JK Rowling, Rod Stewart and Nigel f****** Farage.' Last week Rod announced his support for Farage in an interview with the Times. The Libertines were struck with technical issues this afternoon on the Pyramid set, sparking frustration from upset fans. For the first five minutes of the set, festival goers were treated to blank screens, meaning that most of the crowd were unable to see anything. A source told the Mirror: "It was so annoying - the screen was completely black for the first two songs so we couldn't see anything! They sounded really good though." Glastonbury bosses have issued guidance to festival goers on the likely busiest crowds today. Rod Stewart's Pyramid set at 5.45pm and Maccabees' Park performance at 10.15pm are cited as the most likely to attract big audiences. While other potentially busy shows today include Sub Focus at IICON (12.30am) and Marc Rebillet at Shangri-La Stage at 2am. The festival has warned that late-night areas will be popular again tonight, with organisers set to divert crowds at times to clear space. At tented venues, festival goers should expect a one in, one out policy. Loose Women star Penny Lancaster appeared to be having a ball ahead of Rod Stewart's Glastonbury set this eveninng. The 54-year-old happily mingled with friends as she took photos with fans dressed up as her husband with his iconic hairdo. She was later spotted with pal Davina McCall, who stood out in an eye-catching red dress next to husband Michael Douglas. Over the course of two and a half hours, the crowds at Bob Vylan and Kneecap's performances became a snarling cess-pit of hate, the Mirror's Tom Bryant recalls after Saturday's chaos. Glastonbury bosses had warned that morning that they may have to close off access to the West Holts area because of over-crowding. But as soon as Bob Vylan's set began, it became obvious that his act was exactly the aperitif that the febrile crowd craved. But given the levels of controversy it could easily have been the main course. 'We are live on the BBC, so we have to be careful what we say,' said Vylan. But being careful was not on the agenda as he began a spine-tingling chant calling for the murder of the Israel Defence Force. The face of the old lady next to me is contorted with rage as she chants along. Vylan then launches into a rant decrying the music industry figures who had written to Glastonbury bosses calling for Kneecap to be banned including his former 'bald headed c***' of a boss. 'Name him, name him,' menacingly chant the crowd back. The BBC has addressed airing the moment performer Bobby Vylan, of punk rap dup Bob Vylan, chanted "Death to the IDF" to a crowd at Glastonbury on Saturday. The scenes aired live on BBCiPlayer, leaving many viewers upset over the footage as Health Secretary Wes Streeting branded it "appalling". A BBC spokesperson has since responded to the incident in a statement. They told the Mirror: 'Some of the comments made during Bob Vylan's set were deeply offensive. During this live stream on iPlayer, which reflected what was happening on stage, a warning was issued on screen about the very strong and discriminatory language. We have no plans to make the performance available on demand.' Glastonbury Festival said it is 'appalled' by the actions of rap punk duo Bob Vylan on stage on Saturday, saying it "crossed a line". It comes as footage of the set is assessed by police. Performer Bobby Vylan led crowds on the festival's West Holts Stage in chants of 'Death, death to the IDF' on Saturday, before a member of Irish rap trio Kneecap suggested fans 'start a riot' at his bandmate's forthcoming court appearance. A joint Instagram post from Glastonbury and Emily Eavis said: 'As a festival, we stand against all forms of war and terrorism. 'We will always believe in – and actively campaign for – hope, unity, peace and love. 'With almost 4,000 performances at Glastonbury 2025, there will inevitably be artists and speakers appearing on our stages whose views we do not share, and a performer's presence here should never be seen as a tacit endorsement of their opinions and beliefs. 'However, we are appalled by the statements made from the West Holts stage by Bob Vylan yesterday. 'Their chants very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the Festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.' Olivia Rodrigo has blasted trolls as she gets ready to send out Glastonbury with a bang this evening as they final headlining act. Asked about how some of her exes and other pals have reacted to being mentioned in her songs, she said: 'Most people have been pretty cool. I just feel like that's a personal thing. It's just like this person to person one on one things. 'Songs are just songs. Lots of the times I write something and it's kind of like an amalgamation of lots of different people. Or I write a lot of songs that are of fantasy sometimes too. 'It's important for me to kind of keep my personal life private. I think I will dive as deep as I can into my songs, but I kind of just don't love talking about it. 'That's the boundary for me. It helps me feel healthy and good about my job and my privacy. The Israeli embassy has spoken out about chants of "death to the IDF" at Glastonbury, saying that it is "deeply disturbed" by the scenes. Police are investigating the incident after a member of Bob Vylan was seen shouting out the phrase to the crowd, with videos of the moment circulating on the internet. They had been performing on stage ahead of Irish act Kneecap, whose member Mo Chara as recently in court after brandishing a Hezbolla flag on stage during a gig. A statement from the embassy read: "The Embassy of Israel in the United Kingdom is deeply disturbed by the inflammatory and hateful rhetoric expressed on stage at the Glastonbury Festival." They continued to say that such slogans "advocate for the dismantling of the State of Israel", adding: "When such messages are delivered before tens of thousands of festivalgoers and met with applause, it raises serious concerns about the normalisation of extremist language and the glorification of violence." Though it is possible to drive, you are encouraged to use public transport to get to and from Malahide Castle. Allow yourself plenty of extra travel time, as traffic delays and congestion are inevitable. Bus: Dublin Bus is running a concert express to the venue. It also operates services to Malahide village from the city centre. Dublin Bus routes 42, 42d and 142 go to Malahide village. The H2 and 42 routes connect with Malahide, while the 102 provides a direct route from Dublin Airport. Marathon Coaches are offering private, direct return buses to the concert from Northwall Quay Bus Stop 7623. Irish Concert Travel offer a similar service from the likes of Donegal Town, Sligo, Longford, Ballina, Castlebar, Roscommon and Galway. Train/Dart: Malahide train station is about a 15-minute walk from the concert venue and connects to city centre dart locations including Grand Canal Dock, Pearse, Tara Street and Connolly. Additional capacity and services will operate after the Malahide concert. The Dart often runs extra services for concerts in Malahide, with the last train leaving the station sometime between 11.30pm and midnight. Car: There is limited parking at Malahide Castle, but it is possible to drive to and from gigs. You are recommended to book parking by downloading the Evntz app and clicking 'parking' on the page for Duran Duran.
