Students protest against ‘flaws' in GCAS intake process

Time of India23-06-2025
Ahmedabad: In the undergraduate admission process, 1,32,019 offers were issued after five rounds. As of June 23, only 43,164 students confirmed their admissions — about 32.70% of the total.
The low confirmation rate reflects the dissatisfaction among students.
In postgraduate admissions, 31,299 students out of 45,341 verified applicants in the first phase. Of these, 18,904 confirmed their admissions, marking a confirmation rate of 41.69%.
Amid the ongoing admission process through the Gujarat Centralized Admission System (GCAS), students and political activists staged a protest on Monday at the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG) in Ahmedabad.
The protest, led by NSUI members, was in response to widespread issues in the GCAS admission process. Protesters demanded that the govt immediately introduce an alternative admission system due to multiple irregularities.
Police later detained several demonstrators.
The core issues raised include errors in merit lists due to students mistakenly entering incorrect marks or board details. Activists claimed that in earlier systems, such details were auto-fetched from board records, minimising errors.
Now, students entering Gujarat Board instead of CBSE — or vice versa — face last-minute rejections due to institutional seat limitations. In some cases, students who input wrong marks are assigned top colleges, only to later be disqualified when the errors are discovered.
"Students have been allocated 8–10 colleges, none of which align with their preferences, leading many to not confirm admissions. Meanwhile, deserving students are being denied seats in those very same colleges. This mismatch has caused widespread confusion and frustration," said a student leader.

Police use water cannon to disperse Cong, NSUI workers march to Vidhan Sabha

'We had put up barricades at the Raja Pul crossing noticing that a procession was on its way. Some of the processionists tried to cross the barricades and in the ensuing scuffle, a few police personnel sustained minor injuries. Finally, we had to use water cannons to disperse them. A few have also been detained and an FIR is being lodged', SP, Patna Central, Diksha, told PTI. The procession commenced from the historical Sadaqat Ashram, the BPCC headquarters, and was stopped at the Raja Pul crossing, barely half a kilometre away, to prevent entry into 'restricted area', a police officer said. Patna, Jul 24 (PTI) Police on Thursday used water cannons to disperse leaders and workers of the Congress, and its students' wing NSUI, who were staging a 'Vidhan Sabha march' to highlight issues including the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Earlier, state Congress president Rajesh Kumar, who is also a sitting MLA, had spoken to journalists, while marching out of Sadaqat Ashram. He said, 'We are opposing SIR from the House to the streets (sadan se sadak tak). The day before yesterday, the Election Commission wrongly struck off the names of 35 lakh voters. As of now, 98 lakh voters cannot find their names in the electoral rolls. As suspected, the exercise is turning out to be a move to wrongfully disenfranchise people in order to benefit the BJP-led NDA'. He added, 'Besides, there are a number of issues relating to the youth which the NSUI wishes to highlight. These include joblessness, which has been leading to migration on a large scale, and question paper leaks during competitive examinations. We wish to draw the attention of the government to all such issues through the Vidhan Sabha march'. The Congress is the second largest constituent of the INDIA bloc in Bihar, after the RJD, with 19 members in the 243-strong state assembly. The opposition coalition here also includes three Left parties, CPI(ML) Liberation, CPI(M) and CPI. PTI PKD NAC RG This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. NSUI activists clash with police on DAVV campus

Indore: Eleven National Students Union of India (NSUI) activists were arrested and released on bail on Wednesday after a protest led by them on Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) campus turned chaotic. NSUI had launched the protest as part of its planned agitation, raising concerns ranging from poor evaluation practices to a host of unresolved student-related issues. The protest began around 1pm on DAVV's administrative campus at RNT Marg, where over 150 NSUI activists were stopped at barricaded main entrance. As the activists tried to breach the barricades and force their way on the university's premises, a scuffle broke out with police. The police said that barricades were placed as a precaution. Protesters were expected to maintain distance, but they began pushing forward and climbing on them. "To maintain law and order, the crowd was dispersed, and 11 people were arrested under Section 170 of BNS. All were later released on bail," ACP Tushar Singh told TOI. The way the administration has treated us is nothing short of dictatorship. We are being treated like criminals or terrorists. But we will not back down — we will continue our fight." DAVV officials stated that NSUI had not given any official intimation about the protest. "We came to know about the protest through social media. The university was not informed in advance and we are not even aware of their specific demands," said DAVV registrar Prajwal Khare.

NSUI's statewide protest rally begins from Jodhpur

1 2 Jaipur: NSUI started a statewide Chatra Chetna Yatra from Jodhpur Tuesday, demanding student union elections be reinstated in the state. As part of the campaign, students protested outside the district collectorate in Jodhpur and submitted a memorandum regarding their demands. The protest rally, led by aspiring student leaders Mahendra Chaudhary and Abhishek Chaudhary, would cover districts from Jodhpur to Jaipur and culminate at Rajasthan University around Aug15, where a mega protest will be held. As part of the rally, NSUI students will visit nine major universities and govt college campuses in the state to raise awareness about student union elections among students who have taken admission this year. "The first step of politics is the student union, and those students who want to try their future in politics can enter the field through student body polls. This opportunity should not be taken away from students," said Abhishek Chaudhary. TNN
