Haj Committee likely to invite applications this month

The circular stated that the Haj application will be made available on the Haj Committee of India's official website (https://www.hajcommittee.gov.in) and the Haj Suvidha App. The invitation for applications is expected only after the announcement of the Haj Policy 2026 by the Union ministry of minority Affairs. The Haj quota will be notified separately in due course, the circular added.

5000 get a second chance in life with SMILE
Indore: Indore, which was selected under the SMILE (Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise) Project last year, has so far recorded the rehabilitation of around 5,000 beggars. So far, Union govt granted funds of Rs 24 lakhs, while the Indore district administration also provided financial assistance of Rs 18.5 lakh to support this initiative that made Indore a beggar-free city. Rupali Jain, who runs an NGO enrolled under the SMILE Project, said that after launching the initiative, around 5,000 beggars were rehabilitated, while 2,578 beggars were provided training in vocational courses. "The funds were used in providing shelters to all those who were found begging and were homeless," she said, adding that an entire infrastructure was created to achieve the desired goal. "We employed a team of rescuers along with those who provide training to the inmates," she said, adding that with the help of the local administration, IMC, and other departments concerned, the plan to make Indore a beggar-free city was very well executed. "Most of the funds granted in this drive were used in transportation, food, hygiene, and other things as part of the shelter and care of the inmates," she said.

After Ramadan, Muharram is one of the most sacred months in Islam and it marks the beginning of the lunar calendar. Being the first month in the Islamic calendar, Muharram is considered the second-holiest month in the Hijri calendar. Muharram is followed by the lunar months of Safar, Rabi-al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada ath-Thaniyah, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Zu al-Qadah (or Dhul Qadah) and Zu al-Hijjah (or Zil Hijjah/Dhul Hijjah). On 10 June 2025, Muharram began for the Muslims globally, and as per details, the 10th day of Muharram is observed as Ashura. This year, the Ashura falls on Sunday, 6 July. According to the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee, as quoted by the Hindustan Times, the crescent Moon was sighted in India on 26 June. So, the first day of Muharram-Ul-Haram began on 27 June and with Ashura falling on Sunday, all public and private sector banks and offices will remain closed on this day. Though this is not confirmed as of yet, states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and West Bengal may announce an official holiday if Muharram is observed on 7 July. This would be done depending on religious and administrative coordination.
