India bans imports of certain jute, other items from Bangladesh through land routes
The goods under these curbs include jute products, flax tow and waste, jute and other bast fibres, jute, single flax yarn, single yarn of jute, multiple folded, woven fabrics or flex, and unbleached woven fabrics of jute.
However, imports are allowed only through Nhava Sheva seaport in Maharashtra, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI) India on Friday banned imports of certain jute products and woven fabrics from Bangladesh through all land routes amid strained relations between the two countries.
Such port restrictions will not apply to Bangladeshi goods transiting through India to Nepal and Bhutan, it added.
It further said re-exports of these products from Bangladesh to India through Nepal and Bhutan will not be allowed.
'Import from Bangladesh shall not be allowed from any land port on the India-Bangladesh border. However, it is allowed only through Nhava Sheva seaport,' the DGFT said, adding that 'imports of certain goods from Bangladesh to India are regulated with immediate effect'.
Earlier in April and May, India announced similar curbs on imports from Bangladesh.
On May 17, India imposed port restrictions on the import of certain goods like readymade garments and processed food items, from the neighbouring country.
On April 9, India withdrew the transhipment facility it had granted to Bangladesh for exporting various items to the Middle East, Europe and various other countries except Nepal and Bhutan.
These measures were announced against the backdrop of the controversial statements made by the head of Bangladesh's interim government Muhammad Yunus in China.
The comments did not go down well in New Delhi. It also drew sharp reactions from political leaders in India across party lines.
India-Bangladesh relations have nosedived dramatically after Yunus failed to contain attacks on minorities, especially Hindus.
Bangladesh is a big competitor of India in the textile sector. The India-Bangladesh trade stood at USD 12.9 billion in 2023-24.
In 2024-25, India's exports stood at USD 11.46 billion, while imports were USD 2 billion.
Bangladesh's perceived growing proximity with Pakistan and China and the implications of India's strained ties with its eastern neighbour were also discussed at a parliamentary committee meeting on Friday, according to sources. PTI RR CS BAL BAL

Surat (Gujarat) [India], June 29 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday held a roadshow in Gujarat's Surat, aimed at attracting investments from the western state's industrialists and businesses into his state. Talking to reporters in Surat -- a key industrial hub in Gujarat-- CM Yadav said his state has a lot of potential for investments in various sectors. He also noted that investment proposals worth Rs 15,710 crore were announced today, with approximately 11,500 new employment opportunities. Detox Corporation Private Limited will invest Rs 7,500 crore, while KPI Green Energy Limited will invest Rs 6,500 crore in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said. 'There is a lot of potential in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh has various policies, in addition to the ease of doing business. Today, Madhya Pradesh is standing at a point where from all over the state, as well as from outside the country, entrepreneurs from all sectors are ready to work with us, be it textile, gems, jewellery, chemical, pharma engineering, and all different types of investors,' the chief minister briefed reporters. 'Many other entrepreneurs have expressed their willingness to join Madhya Pradesh. Mumbai now loudspeaker-free after CM intervened, say police
EVEN AS the issue of removal of loudspeakers from mosques by police in the past few weeks led to opposition by some religious organisations, Mumbai Police Saturday said the city is now 'loudspeaker-free'. Officials said that it was Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who held a series of meetings with delegations from the two communities to amicably resolve the issue. Confirming that its personnel successfully completed a comprehensive crackdown on public address systems at all religious structures, Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti on Saturday said that Mumbai is now 'loudspeaker-free from all religious structures'. Earlier this year, the Bombay High Court had directed the government to ensure that action was taken against loudspeaker violations. The police commissioner, refuting claims of selective targeting, made it clear that religious structures of a particular community were not singled out. While the ban on permanent loudspeakers is now in effect, the police commissioner clarified that temporary permissions for the use of loudspeakers will be granted during religious festivals. In the past few days, however, some Muslim organisations had alleged that the police were taking down all loudspeakers irrespective of whether they were violating norms or not. Some delegations had also met senior police officers and also written to CM Fadnavis against it. Sources in the government said that CM Fadnavis held a series of meetings with delegations representing Hindus, Muslims and others to amicably resolve the controversial loudspeaker ban on places of worship'. An official said, 'Fadnavis had made it clear that the state government will strictly adhere to the rules and directives of the High Court. And it would be applicable to all.' He also indicated that the state will not allow any confrontation or law and order issue arising on the subject. 'Therefore, before initiating any action, Fadnavis who also holds the Home portfolio, held detailed discussions with top police officers in order to guide them how to go ahead with the drive,' the official said. Apart from that Fadnavis also spoke to Muslim leaders and impressed upon them the significance of adhering to Court orders on loudspeakers. On June 25, a group of Muslim delegation met Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, complaining that police were removing loudspeakers from mosques in the state. NCP leader Nawab Malik, along with former AIMIM MLA Warris Pathan, his party legislator and daughter Sana Malik, Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi, and others, had called upon Ajit Pawar to raise their concerns. The deputy CM assured them he would look into the matter. At the same time, he also brought to their notice Bombay High Court order, which prescribed permissible decibel limits mandatory for all places of worship. According to the Bombay High Court ruling, the permissible sound level for loudspeakers is 55 decibels during the daytime and 45 decibels at night. In addition, loudspeakers are not permitted between 10 pm and 6 am.
