Phil Collins seen with footballer son in rare appearance after health issues

Metro19-05-2025
Phil Collins has been spotted in a loving family photo with his 20-year-old football star son while facing ongoing health issues.
The legendary Genesis songwriter and drummer, 74, retired from music some time ago after battling severe nerve damage and deteriorating mobility.
He's been unable to play his drums since 2019 and called time on his music career in 2022, instead choosing to prioritise his health and time with his family.
And part of that precious family time has involved the In the Air Tonight singer going to watch his footballer son Mathew in a game over the weekend.
Mathew, 20, who Phil shares with ex-wife Orianne Cevey, plays for WSG Tirol II, which is the youth academy team of Austrian club WSG Tirol.
In a lovely photo, Mathew posed with dad Phil in the stands of the club's stadium, with the younger Collins family member still dressed in his football kit.
Dad Phil opted for a snuggly fleeced jacket and plain black trousers, and was all smiles as he proudly watched his son during WSG Tirol II's 2-1 win over league rivals Fugen.
The caption read, 'Two big wins today!', with Mathew seeing Phil's presence at the game as a big victory amid his superstar dad's chronic health battle.
In the comments, Charlie McDowell -husband of Phil's daughter Lily Collins and the son of actor Malcolm McDowell – said 'Love this so much,' sending love to his brother-in-law and father-in-law.
Surrey-born Emily In Paris star Lily also commented, saying 'I love everything about this,' offering congratulations to Mathew on his big win.
Mathew's brother Nicholas followed his father's footsteps a little more closely by becoming a drummer, eventually playing for Genesis during some live shows.
However, Phil himself is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur and has been following football for some time – he has also made supportive comments about Mathew's career in the past.
Several years ago, he said in a statement: 'Matt loves music, but loves his football even more. He is certain he'll turn professional.'
Mathew began his youth career playing for Astoria Walldorf's under-19s team before joining Hanover 96, who currently play in the second division in Germany.
He signed a contract with WSG Tirol in 2023 and was moved into their academy set-up in order to develop his potential, with a view to one day playing to the first team.
Sunday's game was attended by just 200 people – one of which was Phil – and saw WSG Tirol II stay in third place in their division as the season comes to a close.
WSG Tirol II currently play in the Regionalliga Tirol, which is the fourth tier of Austrian football.
Mathew has scored two goals for his team during this campaign, with his most recent coming in October 2024.
Speaking about Mathew's dad, WSG Tirol II's manager Manuel Ludwiger said: 'We research the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers. It was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son.'
'We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.'
After recovering from hearing loss during the early 2000s, Phil's career got back on track, recording two further solo albums – Testify in 2002, and Going Back in 2010 – and a 2007 Genesis live album. More Trending
However, in 2009, Phil needed surgery on a neck problem that had been plaguing him for some time – sadly, he lost feeling in his fingers and could only play drums if the sticks were taped to his hands.
In 2014, he revealed that an undiagnosed nerve problem had been causing the issues and underwent further operations in 2015 – sadly the procedure still didn't reverse his issues.
Shows in June 2017 were cancelled after Phil slipped over in a hotel room and badly injured himself, with the cause later revealed to be his foot drop, resulting from his 2015 operation.
At that point, he began to use a cane to walk and stayed seated during Genesis shows, eventually retiring from performing a few years later.

My holiday home was trashed when gender reveal party for 8 ‘went viral' & 200 guests turned up… it was out of control

The scenes were described as something out of 'Project X' RENT RAMPAGE My holiday home was trashed when gender reveal party for 8 'went viral' & 200 guests turned up… it was out of control AN Airbnb host was left fuming after a gender reveal party went viral and his holiday home ending up being trashed. The party descended into 'absolute chaos' and 'mayhem' as up to 200 youngsters showed up despite an initial booking of eight. 8 Hundreds of revellers 'hijacked' a luxury house often hired by Airbnb users with just eight on the booking Credit: SWNS 8 Crowds gather on cul-de-sac in Norden, Greater Manchester in June after a gender reveal party descended into chaos Credit: SWNS 8 Matt Genesis, 33, is a director of the company which owns the property and was shocked at the scenes Credit: SWNS Police were called to a usually quiet cul-de-sac in the Norden area of Rochdale, Manchester, to break up the massive crowd last Friday. Residents of Falcon Close said crowds of youngsters gathered on the street, and it took officers in Tactical Aid Unit vans around two hours to clear them out. One shocking image showed the scale of the gathering, amid speculation that word of the party spread on social media. More than 150 people had filled the street and parked over locals' driveways with "minibus after minibus" arriving every 15 minutes. Read More in UK News 'WORST OF HUMANITY' I stared into eyes of 7/7 bomber & saw moment he blew himself up Now, Airbnb host Matt Genesis has claimed that he was tricked after agreeing to rent his home out to a group of eight people who booked it via Instagram for a gender reveal. But the rental turned into a 'Project X' style disaster with hundreds of party-goers flooding to the venue causing chaos and £2,000 worth of damage. The 33-year-old was alerted to the chaos at his £635,000 home by frightened neighbours on June 25. Mr Genesis said: "Whilst we were there, minibus after minibus was turning up - I'd say one every 15 minutes, a minibus full of six to eight people walking in. "It was out of control - police turned up. We called them, obviously neighbours had called them. It was out of our control. "Even the guy who booked it, it was out of his control on his behalf - he said he didn't expect anywhere near the amount of people, but it's been passed around group and groups." My gender reveal was totally ruined by the Card Factory - I found out it the worst way ever we were having a boy and left disappointed He said the operation had been "calculated" - with guests disabling the home's security systems. Mr Genesis tried to log-in into the property's external security cameras only to discover they had been disconnected at the £450 a night rental. He added: "It was very much "Project X".' The disaster caused thousands of pounds worth of damage, with furniture broken and lamps seen smashed on the floor. The property, which previously underwent a £200,000 renovation and includes a hot tub and pool tables, took three staff 12 hours to clean following the party. But despite the major damage, Mr Genesis says that the only money received in return is the £450 per night charge, plus a £250 damage deposit. The property is regularly rented out via Airbnb but on this occasion was booked via Instagram. 8 The luxury guest house costs £450 a night Credit: SWNS 8 Crowds gather on cul-de-sac in Norden with neighbours shocked Credit: SWNS 8 A broken lamp left at the Airbnb Credit: SWNS Mr Genesis said: "It was so structured, before we emptied the house out the people who were there said "where do we go?". "It hit us - we seem like the bad guys, but at the same time it did ultimately hit us as well in the pocket." Neighbours peering through their windows at the time were stunned to see the commotion. Locals in the quiet village described an "out of control" night. "They looked in their 20s to me," one resident of Falcon Close said previously. He added: "It was their presence that became quite threatening really. "It was absolute mayhem." "It was very, very scary when I looked out of the window last night," another local said the morning after the chaos. 8 Police arrived and shut down the chaotic affair Credit: SWNS

The German winger will bring his time at Parkhead to a close after an 18-month spell. RB Leipzig, a club where Kuhn spent time as a youth player, had been interested in signing him too but the player has decided on the switch to Italy. The £17m fee represents a massive profit for the Hoops. Advertisement They paid just £3m to sign him from Rapid Vienna back in January 2024. While Celtic will be netting a hefty profit themselves, the Austrian club are also set to benefit. According to Austrian outlet Laola1, Rapid stand to land €1.6m from the deal, which works out at just shy of £1.4m. The transactions between Celtic and Rapid might not stop there, however. Advertisement SunSport exclusively revealed last night how the Hoops are eyeing a swoop for Isak Jansson. The Swedish winger was signed by Rapid as a direct replacement for Kuhn when he joined Celtic. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up And now the Hoops could make that exact same move. We understand the £3m-rated star is on Celtic's radar, with Lazio, Fiorentina and Paris FC also interested. Celtic told Isak Jansson transfer rules as Rapid Vienna reveal the bid that has already been rejected

The Swede is seen as a successor for Nicolas Kuhn with the winger set to join Como Celtic are keen on adding Rapid Vienna winger Isak Jansson this summer as a replacement for Nicolas Kuhn. The Scottish Premiership champions may have to spend big to bring the winger to Celtic Park after Rapid Vienna sports director Markus Katzer lifted the lid on bids that have already been turf out. ‌ Kuhn's exit is set to bank £17.2million for Celtic when he joins Como just 18 months after he left the Austrian Bundesliga side for Glasgow's east end - with Brendan Rodgers keen to see the money reinvested in the squad. ‌ The Hoops are looking to replicate the success of the £3million recruit by returning to Vienna with Jansson on the shopping list. The 23-year-old joined the club for £200,000 from Spanish Second Division side Cartagena last summer to full the gap left by Kuhn. And Katzer has revealed why they chose Jansson as a direct replacement for the German wide man - and interest that has already been turned down during his short time at the club. He said last month: "We needed a replacement for Nicolas Kuhn after he signed for Celtic. "We asked our manager what type of player he was looking for in particular and he told us he wanted someone who could beat a man, one-on-one. ‌ "We did a wide data search across our target markets and in terms of dribbling and taking on players, Jansson appeared in the top three. "We looked at a lot of his videos and he was exactly what we wanted. "Usually, we would watch a player live, but with the timescale and the closing of the transfer window, we had no time and had to trust the data. ‌ "The risk was relatively low because we also know that in eight to nine out of ten cases, the impressions from video scouting are confirmed during live scouting. "And with Jansson, it wasn't a risk at all because we first agreed on a free loan first and then a small transfer fee of £200,000. "One week after we exercised the purchase option in the season, we had an offer of more than £1 million on the table. ‌ "He will clearly be transferred for many times what we paid for him. He has been an amazing success for us."
