Former NFL Star Loses UFC Fight by Submission, Career in Jeopardy
The UFC's heavyweight division is in a dire state, plagued by a lack of depth, aging veterans, and few rising stars capable of reinvigorating the weight class. Even before Jon Jones' retirement, matchmakers have been struggling to put together compelling matchups in the division, often recycling the same names from the shallow talent pool.

The division's struggles were on full display at UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Teixeira in Nashville, where former NFL defensive end Austen Lane faced off against Petrino in a fight that did little to inspire confidence in the future of the weight class.

Lane, a latecomer to MMA after a journeyman NFL career, was submitted in the first round by Petrino. This latest loss was another unfortunate performance in a UFC run that has yielded just one win in six appearances.
Watch the submission here:
Though he has not lost three consecutive fights, Lane may soon find himself on the chopping block given his record.

A former NFL player, Lane transitioned to MMA in 2017 after retiring from football and entered the UFC through Dana White's Contender Series with hopes of leveraging his athleticism into success. However, his Octagon career has been marked by inconsistency, with a record of one win, four losses, and one "no contest" before he fought Petrino.
Prior to this loss, Lane was KO'd by Mario Pinto in devastating fashion.
His lone UFC victory came against Robelis Despaigne in October 2024, a decision win that showcased his grappling but did little to prove his long-term viability in the promotion.
Against Petrino, Lane was outmatched from the start, succumbing to a rear-naked choke at 4:16 of the first round, a result that further cements his status as a fringe heavyweight.

At 37 years old, Lane's window for a UFC resurgence is closing fast. His athletic background initially generated interest, but his inability to translate that into consistent success has left him vulnerable to release
This loss will likely raise serious questions for the UFC brass about whether they will keep him around much longer.

Todd McShay throws cold water on Colin Cowherd's Browns plan for Arch Manning and Nick Saban, hints another team
Colin Cowherd thinks he knows exactly where Texas Longhorns' quarterback Arch Manning is headed next season. And it's not back to Austin. On The Herd this week, the longtime FOX Sports host boldly predicted that the Texas signal caller will end up with the Cleveland Browns — and that a familiar face could follow him. Cowherd said the 'worst-kept secret in the South' is that the Browns plan to pair Manning with newly retired Alabama coach Nick Saban, banking on ownership ties with the Manning family and Saban's NFL itch to create a blockbuster duo in 2026. The Ringer's Todd McShay said that may not be the case, however. McShay threw cold water on Cowherd's theory and hinted at a very different — and perhaps much more realistic — landing spot for Manning. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp 'Not refuting this as a 'worst-kept secret,'' McShay wrote on X. 'But it's not the only situation to monitor… There's another team with two first-round picks in '26 whose GM's son is a close friend to Arch at Texas. And the HC has a pretty good history with QBs. Just sayin…' That team? The Los Angeles Rams. McShay's post refers to Rams general manager Les Snead and his son, Tate Harver, a long snapper at Texas and reported friend of Manning. The Rams will also have two first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft after trading their 2025 No. 26 pick to the Atlanta Falcons. If Manning enters that draft, L.A. could be perfectly positioned to make a move. There's also a strong coaching connection. Rams head coach Sean McVay and Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian are said to be close — another dot potentially linking Manning to Los Angeles. It helps that the Rams are expected to be in the market for a quarterback soon. With 37-year-old Matthew Stafford possibly retiring at season's end, McShay's post may be signaling more than just speculation. Cowherd's idea of a Saban-Manning NFL pairing might generate headlines, but McShay's insight suggests the next big college-to-pro leap could be happening under the radar — and in Hollywood.
