Oscar Piastri dominates Miami GP as Lewis Hamilton fumes over Ferrari race management
Piastri, who qualified in fourth on Saturday, gained an advantage when a first-corner tussle between pole-sitter Max Verstappen and Norris had the latter falling down the leaderboard into sixth place. The McLaren driver, who secured his maiden win in Miami last year, unsuccessfully attempted to appeal to the stewards, claiming the four-time world champion pushed him off as Verstappen swept across the start.
'If I don't go for it, people complain. If I go for it, people complain,' Norris said post-race.
However, the 25-year-old British driver clawed his way back towards the top on pure pace. Norris closely follows his teammate and current leader, Piastri, in the World Drivers' Championship standings.
The threat of a rain-soaked race loomed throughout all 57 laps, but the race remained a dry, one-stop feature with a handful of Virtual Safety Car stoppages as a slew of rookies came rolling to a halt.
But it was the two Ferraris who stole the show. Lewis Hamilton, who finished third on Saturday's sprint race, and Charles Leclerc began the race at a disadvantage, with Hamilton failing to make it into the third qualifying session on Saturday for the first time since his switch to Ferrari.
Deemed the strongest driver pairing on the grid at the start of the season, the duo has been undermined by a slow car and messy team dynamics. On Sunday, the true cost of two star drivers was on full display.
Hamilton, who gained two places on his 12th place start, nearly completed a double overtake on both Leclerc and Carlos Sainz on lap 34, but failed to fully get past his teammate. In the laps that followed, Hamilton complained over the radio to the team that he was 'burning up' his tires behind Leclerc and asked, 'You want me to just sit here the whole race?' The former Mercedes driver reminded the pit wall of his self-imposed swap at the Chinese Grand Prix where he encouraged the team to favour Leclerc's faster pace: 'In China, I got out of the way,' Hamilton said. 'Have a tea break while you're at it,' he added.
The seven-time world champion made his feelings clear ahead of eventual team orders to swap: 'This is not good teamwork that's all I'm saying.'
But by lap 41 when Hamilton was ahead, his teammate wasn't happy stuck behind in the other Ferrari 's dirty air. After 10 laps of the Monegasque driver complaining about overheating tyres, the team swapped back — nearly risking Hamilton's demotion as he battled Sainz to the finish line. The new addition to the team, audibly frustrated, said over the radio: 'You want me to let him past as well?' Hamilton finished eighth, just three-tenths of a second ahead of Sainz's Williams.
Both Williams drivers, Sainz and Alex Albon, proved just how well the car is developing on Sunday. Albon, who finished fifth, outperformed both Ferraris and a Mercedes.
Further down the grid, Williams' former fellow group of back-of-the-field teams didn't have as lucky of a race. Oliver Bearman's Haas rolled back into the garage after an engine failure. Teammate Esteban Ocon taught a defensive masterclass, going wheel-to-wheel mid-race with Hamilton, but ultimately fell to 12th.
The 2025 F1 rookies didn't fair much better with Liam Lawson and Jack Doohan both retiring following a turn one collision. Gabriel Bortoleto 's engine failed as well, bringing out a Virtual Safety Car.
Kimi Antonelli, however, continued to show a similar pace as he had throughout the Miami Grand Prix weekend. On Friday, the 18-year-old became the youngest-ever F1 pole-sitter.
Antonelli's team, Mercedes, trails behind McLaren in the constructors' championship standings, followed closely by Red Bull. Piastri leads the drivers' standings by 16 points.

Liverpool have spent nearly £300m after an incredible summer of big spending as the Reds look to make Alexander Isak their next lucrative addition - despite criticism of the club's tight purse-strings in recent years Liverpool boss Arne Slot has made his stance clear on the club's spending policy, claiming the club "never hesitate" to splash the cash despite accusations that owners FSG have been frugal with their money since taking over the club. The Reds are having a huge summer of spending as they approach £300million following massive buys, the latest being £79m on Hugo Ekitike, who joined after Liverpool shelled out a British record fee of £116.5m on Bayer Leverksen playmaker Florian Wirtz. Those two deals alone show that FSG and the newly minted Premier League champions mean business this summer. Liverpool have also brought full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez through the door- and there could be yet another big-money transfer amid reports that they are willing to go all out for the £150m-rated Alexander Isak. It seemed Liverpool had signed Ekitike instead of Isak after being informed Newcastle would not sell their star striker. But with the player informing his club that he wants to explore his options this summer, a mega-money transfer could yet happen. This bumper spending spree marks a major change in direction for FSG, who still cannot be accused of failing to bring big names to Anfield considering the lucrative signings of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson in the past. There is a real opportunity for Liverpool to build on their Premier League title triumph and create a dynasty in the top flight, even though they only needed just one new signing to pip their rivals to the crown last year. But Slot, speaking before Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia, said their summer splurge shows they will spent money when the opportunity is there. 'I always say, another thing about Liverpool is that if we see a chance in the market, we never hesitate to bring someone in,' the Dutchman said. "In the end it's about quality and we have already made some very good signings. In terms of quality, we are already in the right place. I think this club has always worked like this. We do spend, but if we spend, then we always need to recoup some money. 'It's what we already started last summer when we only brought in Federico Chiesa, but we sold three or four players, which meant a big profit. So if you balance things out, we've spent, for sure, but we've also recouped money.' The summer before last, Liverpool chiefs committed around £150m on four signings - Dominik Szoboszlai (£60m), Alexis Mac Allister (£35m), Ryan Gravenberch (£34m) and Wataru Endo (£17), three of which have transformed the team. In the 2022-23 campaign they splashed out around £85m on Darwin Nunez while Cody Gakpo arrived in January for roughly £35m, while Luis Diaz and Ibrahima Konate were the only major arrivals the season prior. None of those campaigns have compared to the huge spending power Liverpool have shown off this summer - evidence that FSG chiefs are ready to back Slot after their superb title win and help him win even more silverware. Liverpool fans have protested against their American owners - led by John W. Henry - in the past - staging a demonstration during a Champions League tie against Atalanta following ticket price hikes. The previous year fans flew a banner over Anfield during a clash against Tottenham which read "FSG out" over a lack of investment when they were managed by Jurgen Klopp. For now, Liverpool fans will have little to complain about, especially if their pursuit of Isak proves to be successful. Hamilton Accies boss says quitting has 'never crossed my mind' amid chaos off the pitch
John Rankin is preparing his side for Saturday's League One opener after a summer of turmoil Hamilton boss John Rankin insists he has never considered walking away from Accies amid months of turmoil off the pitch. Just in the past few months, Rankin has had to keep his players focused on football while the club was hit with blow after blow due to the actions of the Hamilton hierarchy. Having been hit with a 15-point deduction by the SPFL due to the club being found guilty of multiple rule breaches, including remuneration defaults with six players, the club was relegated from the Championship as a result. Days later, the club then announced they were leaving their hometown after a fallout with the owners of New Douglas Park, upping sticks for Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld. Even that wasn't straightforward, with the club left sweating on their lease being approved as the SPFL demanded alterations to the lease and North Lanarkshire Council insisted on a year's rent upfront for it to go ahead. And in the last week, the club has been hammered by the SPFL again with a season-long transfer embargo, imposed due to the club failing to fulfil its tax obligations to HMRC. That has left Rankin with one arm tied behind his back before the league season has even kicked-off, and he will now be forced to field youngsters to get a team on the pitch. Many could forgive Rankin for feeling enough is enough, but asked if he had thought about quitting, he told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "The last couple of months have been quite a turbulent time, there's always been something going on. "You feel like you've picked yourself up to go again and then you get your feet swiped away from you again. "But it has never crossed my mind [to leave]. "The thing that motivates me and keeps the rest of the staff going are these players. Working away with them every day, we see how much they are putting in. "So seeing their commitment and desire, playing through the pain barrier, giving it blood, sweat and tears to try and achieve their goals in their career, it speaks volumes for them." Accies are still aiming to bounce straight back to the Championship and Rankin hopes his threadbare squad can find a way to use their plight as fuel to fire them to promotion. He added: "This season is going to be a big challenge, but in my full career at the club it has been a challenge. "We are not going to shirk away from a challenge now because we can't bring in players and make the squad as big as we would hope for. "It brings everybody closer together and we need to have a strong mentality to get through games. "There's an extra six games this season because of the way the [Challenge] cup is this season as well. "So the hard part is trying to judge how to let the players recover and keep them as fresh as possible, but we are fortunate that we've got sports scientists to look at the data on that. "Players are going to have to keep churning out performances. There's a lot to think about over the last week for them and it has been a lot of work, but we have to make sure we get players in prime condition.
