Argyle's Baidoo needs time to adapt to English football

BBC News07-03-2025
Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic says Ghana forward Michael Baidoo needs more time to adapt to English football. The 25-year-old signed for a then-club record fee from Swedish side Elfsborg in early January but has struggled to make an impact.Baidoo has yet to score a goal and has not started a game since the 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on 1 February when he was taken off at half-time with the score 0-0.Muslic says fatigue is a factor with Baidoo playing a full season in Sweden - which runs from March to November - before moving to Argyle. "He finished the season over there and joined here. He came here without a break," Muslic said."Imagine you have to play throughout the whole season and you just have to continue another season, that's almost somehow unfair to Michael."He's a very good lad. He tries hard, but he looks just fatigued and he is struggling at the moment."We've tried to give him all the support he needs, but it's not easy for him, and then adapting to Championship, it's physical here."That's a different type of play, a different style of play and he's obviously struggling with everything in a moment."

Top Cardiff City star set to leave imminently as missing team-mate's absence explained

Top Cardiff City star set to leave imminently as missing team-mate's absence explained The latest round-up of Cardiff City transfer news Warm up led by Callum O'Dowda of Cardiff (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency ) Senior Cardiff City star Callum O'Dowda is set to complete a move away to a European club, WalesOnline understands. The Bluebirds winger, who has predominantly played his football at left back in recent times, has been missing from pre-season training this week, prompting many supporters to speculate over the reason why that might be the case. And the Republic of Ireland international will be the first senior, contracted star out the door. ‌ Cardiff allowed nine players to leave earlier this week upon the expiration of their contracts, with Michael Reindorf and Roko Simic also securing loan moves away. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. ‌ The Bluebirds are focussed on trimming down their squad, but are also rightly adamant that they have to make additions in order to address key weaknesses. Left-back now looks a curious position with O'Dowda's exit imminent. They have Joel Bagan, who is now the longest-serving member of this Cardiff senior squad, Ryotaro Tsunoda, who is predominantly a left-footed centre-back, and Luey Giles, a promising if green academy product. Article continues below O'Dowda, 30, signed a new Cardiff deal at the beginning of the year, which sees him contracted to the Bluebirds until 2028 and would see him command a fee should he seal his exit. There were also concerns over two other senior stars who were absent from training this week, however sources claim both Perry Ng and Callum Robinson are actually injured. In the case of Ng, the right-back sustained an injury on the first day of pre-season and is likely to be out for as long as five weeks, which means he will miss the start of the League One season. ‌ Cardiff are already light in that area, however Ronan Kpakio, who was promoted to the Wales senior squad by Craig Bellamy in the most recent camp, will now likely get an opportunity to impress new head coach Brian Barry-Murphy. Robinson, meanwhile, is in the final stages of rehabbing an injury. Last year's player of the season winner missed the final four games of the campaign through injury and is still working his way back to fitness. It is understood the aim is for him to be back with the squad during the pre-season training camp in Spain. Article continues below As for incomings, it is likely Bluebirds fans will have to wait until after Cardiff return from their trip to Spain to see signings made. Some supporters are understandably growing restless over the lack of activity, however the club have held the stance of placing more importance on keeping a core of players who they believe will be central in helping the team achieve promotion back to the Championship. Transfer activity in terms of incomings is expected to pick up towards the end of the month when the squad return from Spain, though. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

Gareth Bale makes £40m takeover offer for Cardiff after breaking silence on bid

Wales legend and five-times Champions League winner Gareth Bale is part of a consortium that is looking to buy Cardiff City after the Bluebirds were relegated from the Championship An official bid has been made for Cardiff City by a consortium fronted by Wales legend Gareth Bale. The Cardiff-native has launched a £40million offer for his hometown club despite Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan indicating he will not sell the club to the former Real Madrid star's group. Bale, 35, is said to be backed by US investors in hoping to acquire the club who were relegated from the Championship to League One at the end of last season. ‌ The side, who were in the Premier League as recently as 2019, failed to maintain their place in the Championship to move into the third tier for the first time in more than 20 years. While that is reported to have prompted a bid, Tan is said to consider it derisory having invested more than £200m into the club. ‌ The £40m offer is likely to see an instant rejection, per the Times. Bale's consortium have already been associated with a failed bid to purchase Plymouth Argyle. The private equity group's bid is not even half of the fee paid for Bale by Real Madrid in 2013. Tan was part of a Malaysian consortium that initially made a £5m investment for 30 per cent of Cardiff City before becoming the majority shareholder and steadily increasing his stake to 98 per cent by 2013. Following a career where he played for Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and LA FC, Bale announced his retirement from professional football following the 2022 World Cup. While famed for his interest in golf, Bale appears happy to return to football in a new capacity. 'We are interested in getting Cardiff,' Bale told Sky Sports last month. 'It's my home club, it's where I grew up and my uncle used to play for them. "To be involved with an ownership group would be a dream come true. It is a club close to my heart and I would love to be able to be a part of growing Cardiff and taking it to the Premier League where it belongs. 'I know how amazing the Welsh fans and Cardiff fans are. It would be amazing to try and do something together. ‌ "We are trying to engage with Cardiff and more news will come out on that in the future, but hopefully we can get something done." Bale was present for the BMW International Open 2025 pro-am at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried earlier this week. After already being part of the fields at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Alfred Dunhill Links, Bale made his third appearance in Munich alongside the likes of Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.
