Vice President Election race: Poll schedule to be announced soon, preparation of Electoral College completed, says EC

Mint2 days ago
The Election Commission of India said on Thursday, 31 July, that it will soon announce the schedule for the election to the vice president's office.
The poll panel said it has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025.
As per Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the Vice President of India is elected by an Electoral College comprising the elected members of the Rajya Sabha, the nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and the elected members of the Lok Sabha.
The announcement comes after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President on 21 July, opening the contest for his successor.
Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022, and his tenure was till 2027.
Dhankhar's abrupt resignation followed a day of surprising developments in the Rajya Sabha for the government, as an opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma was submitted to him and he mentioned it in the House.
Accordingly, the poll panel said it has already started preparing for the Vice Presidential Elections in 2025 and that the election schedule will follow soon.
'The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in Election Commission of India from the date of notification, which is likely to be announced soon,' the poll panel said.
According to Articles 63 to 71 of the Constitution and the Vice-President (Election) Rules, 1974, a formal election must be held within 60 days of Dhankhar's resignation and before 19 September 2025.
The electorate or the electoral college comprises all members of both Houses of Parliament—elected and nominated—using a proportional representation system via a single transferable vote. The MPs will cast a single transferable vote with a secret ballot.
The electoral college currently has 788 MPs,588 in Lok Sabha and 245 in Rajya Sabha.
The Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in Election Commission of India from the date of notification.
The Election Commission will announce the date of polls. The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance(NDA) has a majority in the electorate, which includes the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Therefore, the probable names will likely be considered in the coming days.

'Hindu Terror, Not Saffron': Chavan's Remark On Malegaon Verdict Draws 'Lame Horse' Dig From BJP In a political bombshell, Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan reacted to the acquittal of all accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast by reigniting the controversial debate around "Hindu terror" and "saffron terror." 'If not saffron, call it Hindu or Sanatani terror,' Chavan said, before clarifying that terrorism has no religion. But his choice of words has ignited a nationwide storm. Chavan accused the BJP-led government and the NIA of weakening the case, asking bluntly, 'If those acquitted didn't do it, then who planted the bomb?' His remarks have given fresh ammunition to both allies and adversaries. Constitution under siege, BJP doing ideological coup to replace republic with theocratic state: Sonia

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday (August 2, 2025) alleged that the Constitution is 'under siege' as the ruling BJP is using its power to dismantle the very framework it long opposed. She alleged that the BJP is seeking to bring an 'ideological coup' by replacing our democratic republic with a theocratic corporate state serving the powerful few. In her special message read out at the day-long national legal conclave on 'Constitutional Challenges - Perspectives and Pathways', Ms. Gandhi said the Congress would oppose every attempt to undermine the Constitution in Parliament, in courts and on the streets, asserting that it is not just a political but an ideological commitment to defend every Indian's dignity. 'Today, the Constitution is under siege. The BJP-RSS, which never fought for freedom or upheld equality, now uses its power to dismantle the very framework it long opposed,' she said. 'Their ideological forebears glorified Manusmriti, rejected the tricolour, and envisioned a Hindu rashtra, where democracy is hollow and discrimination is the law. In power, they've eroded institutions, criminalised dissent, targeted minorities and betrayed Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs and the working poor. 'Now they seek to erase socialism and secularism, pillars of Ambedkar's vision of equal citizenship. This is not reform, but an ideological coup replacing our democratic republic with a theocratic corporate state serving the powerful few,' the former Congress chief alleged. She stressed that India yearns for the inclusive, just and democratic nation envisaged by our freedom fighters and Constitution makers. 'That is what the Congress party stands and fights for. We will oppose every attempt to undermine the Constitution, in Parliament, in courts, and on the streets. This is not just political, it is our ideological commitment to defend every Indian's dignity. I commend Abhishek Manu Singhvi and his team for reigniting this vital conversation. Our mission is clear - to reclaim the republic and protect the rights of each and every person,' she said in her message. Ms. Gandhi said the Constitution is more than a legal charter and claimed that it is the moral foundation of our democracy, built on justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Noting that the Constitution was shaped through the sacrifices and vision of the Indian National Congress, she said even before independence, the Congress imagined a constitution, 'by Indians, for Indians'. From the Nehru Report in 1928 to the demand for a Constituent Assembly in 1934, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru laid the groundwork and B.R. Ambedkar, as chairman of the Drafting Committee, gave form to these ideals. 'He warned that without social and economic justice, political democracy would be just a top dressing,' she said. 'The Congress recognised this and acted on it, expanding rights, strengthening institutions, and upholding dignity and inclusion,' she said.

Even 24 hours after publication of Bihar draft rolls no political party has filed objections: ECI

NEW DELHI: Amid a major political storm over the Election Commission of India's (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls, the poll panel on Saturday said that despite 24 hours having passed since the draft rolls were published, none of the political parties have filed even a single case of claims and objections. Meanwhile, the Commission has approved a substantial hike in the honorarium for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Supervisors, along with newly introduced payouts for senior officials overseeing electoral roll management. In an official statement, the poll panel said, the draft Electoral Rolls of all the 90,712 polling booths of all 243 assembly constituencies have been shared with all the political parties by all 38 DEOs of Bihar on 1 August 2025. It, however, said, 'From 1 August 2025 (3 PM) till 2 August (3 PM), all political parties put together, have filed 'Zero' Claims and Objections for the addition of the names of eligible electors and deletion of the names of ineligible electors.'
