
Growing Methi To Studying Muscle Cells: Top Biologist Lists Space Experiments
This 14-day mission, a collaboration between ISRO, NASA, and Axiom Space, sees the astronaut conduct seven scientific experiments that could help in future of space biology and sustainability in long-duration missions.
In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, NASA biologist Dr Sharmila Bhattacharya, and a guest speaker at the Ashoka University, shared detailed insights into some of the Indian experiments and their significance. Dr Bhattacharya, who has flown at least nine experiments on the ISS and trained astronauts, including Sunita Williams, expressed her excitement about India's growing role in space science.
Recently, on July 4, ISRO gave an update suggesting that 'Gaganyatri has successfully completed the microgravity experiment involving Tardigrades on board ISS.' In addition, ISRO aims to inspire students and the public by bringing the experience of space closer to Earth through its outreach activities. The microgravity environment provides a great tool to demonstrate scientific principles. During this mission, the Gaganyatri is also conducting science demonstrations on board the ISS, as part of ISRO's planned scientific outreach activity.
Sprouting Indian Nutrition in Space
One of the most anticipated experiments is titled "Sprouts," led by Dr Ravikumar Hosamani, a former postdoctoral fellow in Dr Bhattacharya's lab. This experiment involves sprouting two culturally and nutritionally significant Indian plants-fenugreek (methi) and green gram (moong dal)-in microgravity. These plants were chosen for their high nutritional value and potential health benefits, including support for bone density, cardiovascular health, and immune function.
"These seeds will be sprouted in space, returned to Earth, and analysed for how they responded to the space environment," said Dr Bhattacharya. "This is the first time these specific seeds are being flown, and the data could be invaluable for future space diets."
Although the astronaut won't be consuming the sprouts during the mission, the experiment will assess microbial growth and viability, paving the way for future edible space crops.
Crop Seeds and Space Agriculture
Another experiment, "Crop Seeds on ISS," is being led by Dr Kumaran Sreejalekshmi from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Kerala. This study will expose various Indian crop seeds to the space environment and analyse their germination and growth upon return.
While similar studies have been conducted by NASA, ESA, and China, Dr Bhattacharya emphasised the importance of repeating such experiments with region-specific crops. "The more data we gather, especially with seeds relevant to Indian diets, the better we can prepare for sustainable agriculture in space," she noted.
Cyanobacteria And Microalgae: Life Support And Beyond
Two additional experiments will explore the use of cyanobacteria and microalgae-organisms known for their ability to photosynthesise and produce oxygen. These studies aim to evaluate their potential in environmental control and life support systems (ECLSS) aboard spacecraft.
"Cyanobacteria can help regulate oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, while microalgae could serve as both a food supplement and a source of biofuel," explained Dr Bhattacharya. "Understanding how these organisms behave in space is crucial for long-term missions."
Myogenesis: Studying Muscle Loss in Space
The "Myogenesis" experiment will investigate muscle cell degradation in microgravity. Muscle loss is a well-documented challenge for astronauts, and this study aims to identify biological changes and potential countermeasures.
"In vitro studies allow us to examine cellular responses in detail, which is not always possible with human subjects," said Dr Bhattacharya. "This research could inform exercise routines, dietary supplements, or medications to mitigate muscle loss."
Visual-Motor-Spatial Adaptation
Another experiment will focus on how astronauts' visual and spatial orientation is affected by prolonged exposure to microgravity. Using computer display screens and specialised algorithms, the study will monitor changes in perception and coordination.
"Even though astronauts are highly capable, subtle changes in visual-motor function can occur," said Dr Bhattacharya. "This experiment will help us understand and possibly improve how astronauts interact with digital systems in space."
A Personal Connection to India's Space Journey
Dr Bhattacharya shared a personal anecdote about training Sunita Williams in 2004, long before Williams became a household name in space exploration. "She was in my class of four astronauts, and we spent a month together in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. We've stayed in touch ever since," she said warmly.
Williams, known for her love of Indian food and dubbed the "samosa-eating astronaut," exemplifies the deep cultural and scientific ties between India and NASA.
Building Toward India's Space Future
These experiments are not just isolated studies-they are stepping stones toward India's broader ambitions, including establishing its space station and sending an astronaut to the Moon by 2040, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Doing science in space is not easy," Dr Bhattacharya emphasised. "You need approvals, safety checks, and efficient use of mass, volume, and power. But these baby steps by India are essential. The more data we gather now, the better prepared we'll be for future missions."
She praised the collaborative nature of the Axiom 4 mission, calling it a model for international cooperation. "Science is best done collectively. ISRO's partnership with NASA and Axiom is a great example of how nations can work together to push the boundaries of knowledge."

India has to triple its satellites in orbit in next three years: ISRO chief
Hyderabad: ISRO Chairman V Narayanan on Friday said that India has to nearly triple its number of satellites in space, from the current 55, within the next three years. Delivering 'The GP Birla Memorial Lecture on Indian Space Programme - Accomplishments, Challenges and Future Perspectives', Narayanan said by 2040 India would be on par with any other nation in terms of space technology, application area, and infrastructure. He also said as many as 12 launch vehicle missions are planned by the ISRO this year. The upcoming mission, NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) is scheduled to be launched by India's GSLV F16 on July 30. "Now we are working on building our own space station. We are going to have our own Chandrayan landing. Right now, 55 satellites are in orbit serving the common man in this country. And in another three years, this number has to become almost three times. The requirement is huge. The demand is so much that we have to build satellites. We are working towards that," he said. Later, talking to reporters, he said that in 2035 India will build a full space station, and the first module will be placed in orbit in 2028. Narayanan said, as far as space sector reforms are concerned, a lot of work is going on, and earlier, ISRO's model of work used to be service-oriented, but now it wants to grab business opportunities. He said after the success of Chandrayaan-3, Japan wanted to collaborate with India, and as a result, ISRO and JAXA, the Japanese space agency, decided to work towards the Chandrayaan-5/LUPEX mission. "We are building the satellite together, and the launch will be done by Japan. Chandrayaan-3's lander mass was 1,600 kg and this will be 6,600 kg. We are working on that and you will hear great news in another two years," he said. Narayanan stated that ISRO is in the process of launching a 6,500 kg communication satellite of the USA into orbit using Indian rockets, in another three months. He further said the centre gave its approval for setting up a third launch pad at Sriharikota with a budget of about Rs 4,000 crore. According to him, the ISRO expects the Gaganyaan mission to launch Indian astronauts into space only in the first quarter of 2027. ISRO has placed 433 satellites belonging to 34 countries which do not have space technology into orbit using Indian rockets. In the last ten years the total number of satellites launched by ISRO stands at 518, he added. Narayanan, Chairman of ISRO and Secretary of the Department of Space received the prestigious G P Birla Memorial Award.

NISAR is the first-of-its-kind joint Earth observation satellite by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It is scheduled to launch into space at 5:40 p.m. on July 30 from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The ISRO has already shared a YouTube link where the launch will be live-streamed. The live streaming will begin at 5:10 p.m. NASA says it is the "most advanced Earth-observing radar satellite we've ever launched." What is NISAR? Why is it important for India? And how will it help? Here's all you need to know about the ISRO-NASA joint satellite. ISRO's GSLV-F16 – an Indian rocket – will launch NISAR, the first joint Earth observation satellite by ISRO and NASA, from Sriharikota on July 30. NISAR is short for 'NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar'. It is a unique earth observation satellite. It will observe earth with a swath of 242 km and high spatial resolution, using SweepSAR technology for the first time. The NISAR mission will have a minimum mission lifetime of three years. "It's the most advanced radar satellite ISRO and NASA have ever launched," NASA said. This powerful satellite will track changes on land and ice, from areas at risk for landslides and earthquakes to shifting glaciers and ice sheets. It will track the movement of land and ice surfaces down to a fraction of an inch, giving us key data on earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers, and more. The satellite will further monitor soil moisture, crop growth, and drought effects to help farmers make informed decisions all season long. NISAR will scan the entire globe twice every 12 days, providing high-resolution, all-weather, day-and-night data, "sampling Earth on average every 6 days for a baseline 3-year mission." Most areas will be imaged four-six times per month, with exact repeat of the orbits at 12-day intervals. It can detect even subtle changes in Earth's surface, such as ground deformation, ice sheet shifts, and vegetation dynamics. "The mission will also support many critical applications, including sea ice monitoring, ship detection, storm tracking, soil moisture changes, mapping and monitoring of surface water resources and disaster response," the space agencies said. One of the goals of the mission is to "increase the utility, accessibility and discoverability of NISAR data by a broad community." NISAR's data can help people worldwide better manage natural resources and hazards. The mission will offer help in areas such as agriculture, preparation for, and response to disasters like hurricanes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. It will also provide information for scientists to better understand the effects and pace of climate change. "It will empower scientists, researchers and policy makers with vital incites," ISRO said. The NISAR mission will also add to "our understanding of our planet's hard outer layer, called its crust," NASA explained. "As the mission continues for years, the data will allow for better understanding of the causes and consequences of land surface changes, increasing our ability to manage resources and prepare for and cope with global change," NASA said. Besides, this mission symbolises a leap towards sustainable living and informed disaster resilience. "NISAR is not just a satellite, it's a symbol of global unity, scientific excellence and hope. It promises to safeguard out future by helping humanity live more wisely with nature," the space agencies said. The satellite mission also marks a new chapter in the growing collaboration between the two space agencies -- ISRO and NASA. NISAR uses a sophisticated information-processing technique known as synthetic aperture radar to produce extremely high-resolution images, NASA explains. The radar penetrates clouds and darkness, allowing NISAR to collect data day and night in any weather. Over the course of multiple orbits, the radar images will allow users to track changes in croplands and hazard sites, as well as to monitor ongoing crises such as volcanic eruptions. "The images will be detailed enough to show local changes and broad enough to measure regional trends," NASA said. NISAR has two radar instruments — an S-band system provided by ISRO and an L-band system provided by NASA — to provide high-resolution data to "help decision-makers, communities, and scientists monitor major infrastructure, agricultural fields, and movement of land and ice surfaces," NASA said. 1. First dual-band radar satellite: NISAR is the first satellite mission to collect radar data in two microwave bandwidth regions, called the L-band and the S-band, to measure changes of Earth's surface, including movements as small as centimeter. 2. First GSLV to SSO: It will be the first time that GSLV-F16 will inject a satellite into a 743 km Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) with an inclination of 98.40 3. First ISRO-NASA EO mission: This is the first space collaboration between NASA and ISRO for an Earth Observation (EO) satellite mission. 4. World's most expensive satellite: NISAR, weighing 2392 kg, has a price tag of $1.5 billion, making it the most expensive Earth observation satellite to date, the Indian express reported. 5. Data storage and distribution: The radars will generate about 80 terabytes of data products per day over the course of NISAR's prime mission. That's roughly enough data to fill about 150 512-gigabyte hard drives each day. The information will be processed, stored, and distributed via the cloud — and accessible to all. NASA informed that all NISAR science data will be freely available and open to the public. NASA has chosen the Alaska Satellite Facility Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) to host the mission's data and products.
