Injury mars Roosters' big start to NRLW title defence
The 24-year-old Fiji international scored all three of her tries in the first half off the back of cut-out passes from teammates Jasmin Strange (twice) and halfback Jocelyn Kelleher.
Naividi also led her side in tackle breaks with 10.
But the six tries-to-one win was soured with a serious right elbow injury to NSW Origin winger Jayme Fressard as she was attempting to plant the ball in the north-west corner of Allianz Stadium in the 51st minute of Sunday's match.
"She has a dislocated elbow so it's not looking great for her at the moment. We'll just have to see what happens," coach John Strange said on how long Fressard would be on the sidelines.
Highlights for the Warriors were few on the scoreboard but they showed plenty of spark in attack off the back of halves Emily Curtain and Patricia Maliepo.
A 14-time Zealand Ferns rugby international, Maliepo was on debut and both scored and converted the first Warriors try since 2020, which was the last NRLW season the Auckland club competed.

"I thought we were courageous, determined, full of resolve," Warriors coach Ron Griffith said.
"Seventh-five per cent of our players haven't played NRLW before, we have five rugby union players, we didn't have a trial game, and they just kept turning up for each other."
But it was the four tries in the opening 35 minutes – the other was by Fressard – that had the Warriors chasing hard as they headed to the sheds down 18-6 at halftime.
That task became a little harder early in the second half, when prop and former Newcastle Knight Rima Butler was rewarded for her seven tackle-busts by scoring her first try in Roosters colours (24-6).
A try to Dally M medallist Olivia Kernick in the 53rd minute and there was no coming back.
The Roosters take on a Dragons outfit full of confidence at Jubilee Stadium next week after the Red V's 36-14 win over the Raiders yesterday.
But the Tricolours will still be without their Golden Boot winner Tarryn Aiken (shoulder) who is still three to four weeks away.

Marcus Smart signs with the rival Lakers, Al Horford remains in a holding pattern, and other thoughts on the Celtics
Advertisement Smart agreed to the buyout this past weekend, but his destination surely made Celtics fans cringe. The 2021-22 NBA Defensive Player of the Year has agreed to a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Smart, who was selected by the Celtics with the sixth pick of the 2014 draft, was the first key piece of Boston's swift rebuild. He helped the Celtics to the conference finals five times, along with the 2022 NBA Finals appearance against the Warriors. But after the Celtics lost to the Heat in the Eastern Conference finals in 2023, Smart was traded to the Grizzlies in the three-team deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis, and, eventually an NBA title, to Boston. Advertisement Smart's last two seasons have been slowed by injuries and inconsistent opportunities. He appeared in a total of just 54 games. But he is just 31, and if he is healthy he could become an essential part of a Lakers team looking to make perhaps one final run with LeBron James. The Lakers' backcourt of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves is potent on offense but a liability on defense, and Smart should fortify that group. On Tuesday, Smart was asked what it will be like to face his former team as a member of the rival Lakers. 'I'm expecting a lot of boos,' he said, smiling. 'I'm expecting a lot of hate. And it's OK. I understand it.' Smart becomes the latest longtime Celtics guard to join the Lakers late in his career, following Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley, and Isaiah Thomas. ⋅ All indications are that center-forward Al Horford is in a holding pattern with the Warriors as wing Jonathan Kuminga's situation drags on. Kuminga, 22, is a restricted free agent and has made it clear he is in search of a large contract and larger role. The Warriors tendered Kuminga a $7.9 million qualifying offer that he clearly has no plans to accept. Golden State could work to orchestrate a sign-and-trade with another team to recoup an asset. Regardless, it's unlikely that Horford's future will be determined until that first domino falls. Celtics president of basketball operations ⋅ Drew Nicholas should sound familiar to longtime college basketball diehards. The Celtics' new executive director of player personnel was a guard on Maryland's 2001-02 national championship team that included future NBA players Steve Blake, Juan Dixon, Chris Wilcox, and Lonny Baxter. Nicholas averaged a team-high 17.8 points as a senior the following season. In Boston, he'll help fill the void created by the departures of assistant general manager Austin Ainge and director of scouting Remy Cofield. Advertisement ⋅ The Celtics' sale continues to push forward as scheduled. Look for the NBA's board of governors to approve ⋅ The New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League parted ways with former Celtics big man Tacko Fall. Fall averaged 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds over 18 games with the Breakers last season. ⋅ ⋅ Celtics big man Luka Garza, a Washington, D.C., native, threw out the first pitch prior to the Nationals' home game against the Reds on Wednesday. found a guy (luka garza 6'10 btw) taller than james wood (6'7 btw) to throw the first pitch → — Washington Nationals (@Nationals) Adam Himmelsbach can be reached at

Carlton determined to send Docherty off a winner
Carlton coach Michael Voss is hoping Sam Docherty's "powerful legacy" can inspire the Blues in their beloved former captain's 184th and final AFL game. While Carlton's finals hopes are over, they will be desperate to upset Hawthorn at the MCG on Thursday night and send Docherty off a winner. Star defender Jacob Weitering, a close friend of Docherty, will also be celebrated when he lines up for his 200th game. It's a special one tomorrow you at the 'G 💫 — Carlton FC (@CarltonFC) July 23, 2025 Docherty has defied major adversity in his life to be an integral part of Carlton's past decade, also becoming one of the most popular and respected players in the AFL. Voss has a special bond with the 31-year-old, having drafted him at the end of 2011 to become his first AFL coach at Brisbane. Docherty had three coaches at Carlton - Mick Malthouse, Brendon Bolton and David Teague - before he was reunited with Voss in late 2021 as he was battling testicular cancer for a second time. "Reconnecting with him ... he was white and bald and dealing with a really big life challenge," Voss said of Docherty's chemotherapy. "Telling me he was going to play round one three months later, which I was more than happy to agree with but silently thinking 'no chance', but he did it." Docherty's remarkable return for round one of the 2022 season, just nine months after starting chemotherapy, will go down as the defining moment of his career and one of the most inspiring in the AFL this century. "Every time he set himself with that task, he's been able to do it," Voss said. "There's some sort of resolve in there that not many have, and he's been able to dig deep a lot of times and find something extra. "(The round one game against Richmond) it felt like one of the rare times the whole stadium comes together as one and it didn't matter who you barracked for, it was about that moment and that person. "You don't get too many times in football and your career when you experience that, but that felt like a real powerful moment when he kicked that goal, and I think we were all standing up and barracking at that time." "'Crip'. I'm sorry we don't get to share that moment together... I love ya."When breaking the news to the team, Sam Docherty had this emotional message for great mate Patrick Cripps... yep 🥺Full version to come. #ThankYouDoc — Carlton FC (@CarltonFC) July 22, 2025 Calling Docherty's Tuesday announcement "one of the better retirement speeches I've heard", Voss described him as "stubborn, resolute, confident". "He won't end on the success that he so dearly wants for this club, that we all want," Voss said. "He should know he leaves with a pretty powerful legacy that we get to build off the back of. "It's pretty significant to be able to see what his journey was at the start." In a boost for Carlton, star forward Harry McKay will return to face the Hawks after missing the past eight weeks with a knee injury. But Voss confirmed star midfielder Sam Walsh will struggle to play again this season as he recovers from a foot injury.

Nebraska women's basketball alum Isabella Bourne shines in Asia Cup play
Nebraska women's basketball alum Isabella Bourne was a key piece in helping the Australian national team capture the FIBA Asia Cup title earlier this week. Bourne tallied eight points and three rebounds in the championship game, putting the final stamp on what was an impressive stretch of play. All told, she averaged 6.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal per game during the tournament. Australia required a 5-0 record in the process. She was able to do it all for the Opals on Sunday. She had to three-point shots and was perfect from the free throw line. She had two assists, one steal, and a blocked shot in just over 11 minutes of play. This should come as no surprise to Huskers fans, as she displayed that type of consistency while in Lincoln. She scored 1,221 points during her tenure with the program and served as a three-time co-captain. She also proved to be effective on the boards, snagging 648 rebounds in four seasons.
