Irish Examiner4 days ago

A fresh appeal for information has been made over the death of a man in a hit and run in Co Monaghan.
Gardai said Fintan Traynor, 20, had been walking home on a road close to the Irish border in the early hours of June 26 2011 after a night out in Castleblayney when he was struck by a car.
They said it happened on the Lemgare Road, which links the villages of Clontibret and Annyalla with Derrynoose and Keady in Co Armagh, and the driver of the vehicle failed to stop, instead fleeing the scene.

'Did someone confide in you?
'In 14 years loyalties, friendships and relationships change and perhaps now you are in a position to provide the investigation team with the vital information that would locate the vehicle and driver.

Police assessing videos of Kneecap and Bob Vylan's Glastonbury performances

Police are assessing videos of comments made by acts Bob Vylan and Kneecap at Glastonbury to decide whether any offences may have been committed. Rapper Bobby Vylan, of rap punk duo Bob Vylan, led crowds on the festival's West Holts Stage in chants of: 'Free, free Palestine' and: 'Death, death to the IDF', before a member of Irish rap trio Kneecap suggested fans 'start a riot' outside his bandmate's upcoming court appearance. Bob Vylan also displayed pro-Palestinian images (Yui Mok/PA) In a post on social media, Avon and Somerset Police said: 'We are aware of the comments made by acts on the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival this afternoon. 'Video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation.' Bob Vylan performing on the West Holts Stage (Ben Birchall/PA) Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has spoken to the BBC director general about Bob Vylan's performance, a Government spokesperson said. They added: 'We strongly condemn the threatening comments made by Bob Vylan at Glastonbury. 'The Culture Secretary has spoken to the BBC Director General to seek an urgent explanation about what due diligence it carried out ahead of the Bob Vylan performance, and welcomes the decision not to re-broadcast it on BBC iPlayer.' There was a display of pro-Palestinian flags and t-shirts during Kneecap's set (Yui Mok/PA) A BBC spokesperson said: 'Some of the comments made during Bob Vylan's set were deeply offensive. During this live stream on iPlayer, which reflected what was happening on stage, a warning was issued on screen about the very strong and discriminatory language. We have no plans to make the performance available on demand.' Kneecap, who hail from Belfast, have been in the headlines after member Liam Og O hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, was charged with a terror offence. In reference to his bandmate's upcoming court date, Naoise O Caireallain, who performs under the name Moglai Bap, said they would 'start a riot outside the courts', before clarifying: 'No riots just love and support, and support for Palestine.' During the performance Caireallain said: 'The Prime Minister of your country, not mine, said he didn't want us to play, so f*** Keir Starmer.' He also said a 'big thank you to the Eavis family' and said 'they stood strong' amid calls for the organisers to drop them from the line-up. O hAnnaidh, 27, wore a keffiyeh during the set, while member JJ O Dochartaigh, who performs under the name DJ Provai, wore his signature tri-coloured balaclava as well as a T-shirt that said: 'We are all Palestine Action', in reference to the soon-to-be banned campaign group. News broadcasts criticising the hip hop trio played from the sound system before they walked onto the stage were booed by the Glastonbury Festival audience. The trio opened with the song Better Way To Live from their 2024 album Fine Art and also performed tracks including Get Your Brits Out and Hood. Access to the area around the West Holts Stage was closed around 45 minutes before their performance after groups of fans arrived to form a sea of Irish and Palestinian flags. A Bob Vylan member crowd-surfs surrounded by Palestinian flags (Yui Mok/PA) Earlier on Saturday, the BBC confirmed they would not be live-streaming the set but said the performance is likely to be made available on-demand later. O hAnnaidh was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November last year. On June 18, the rapper was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates O Caireallain and O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. He was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing at the same court on August 20.

Man remanded in custody accused of sitting driving theory tests for other people

A MAN HAS been remanded in custody after being charged with conspiring to pose as driving theory test candidates in a learner permit fraud. It follows an investigation by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau, which opened in March 2021 and targeted fraudulently obtained driving permits. Andre Contagariu, 26, with an address at Castlecurragh Park, Dublin 15, was arrested shortly before 7am this morning. The married father of two was then charged with two offences. It is alleged that between 14 September 2018 and 29 June 2021, he conspired with one or more persons to do an act that constitutes serious offences. The first was the unlawful use of a computer within the State by undergoing driver theory tests on behalf of third parties to obtain driver theory test pass certificates. According to the second conspiracy charge, he allegedly carried out deceptions over the same period 'by unlawfully undergoing driver theory tests in the names of third parties to induce the issue of driver theory test pass certificates' to make a gain or cause a loss to another by deception. Advertisement He appeared before Judge John Hughes at Dublin District Court today, where Detective Garda Barry McCormack gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. Judge Hughes heard the man 'made no reply' when charged. Due to the offence category, the High Court must decide if Mr Contagariu can be released on bail. Defence solicitor Sandra Frayne said her client, who did not address the proceedings, was seeking legal aid and had no income. The judge heard that Mr Contagariu was not getting social welfare and was supported by his family. Noting there was no Garda objection, he agreed to grant legal aid. Judge Hughes remanded the accused in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court for directions from the DPP on Thursday, 3 July. His trial venue was not stated; it has yet to be detailed whether the case will be dealt with at the District Court level or be sent to the Circuit Criminal Court, which has greater sentencing powers. The conspiracy allegations are under section 71 of the Theft and Fraud Act, which can, on conviction, carry a maximum 10-year sentence. A man and woman have already been jailed on connected charges.

Woman (50s) convicted after threatening husband and verbally abusing daughter

The woman, aged in her 50s, pleaded guilty to three breaches of a protection order her husband had obtained against her in September 2024. A woman has been convicted and fined for repeatedly breaching a protection order granted in favour of her husband - with a judge warning of the long-term emotional impact on their child. She appeared before Judge Conor Fottrell at the District Court on Wednesday. The woman, aged in her 50s, pleaded guilty to three breaches of a protection order her husband had obtained against her in September 2024. Gardaí told the court that on one occasion in early October, at the family home, the woman shouted abusive language at her husband, calling him 'useless", "gay" and a 'f**kwit" - leaving him in fear. She also directed verbal abuse at their daughter, calling her 'an itinerant', 'fat' and a 'stupid slut' and shouted 'where are your sluts?', which also left the child in fear. File image of an Irish courtroom. News in 90 Seconds - June 28th Further breaches occurred in late September, when she shouted: 'I'll mop the floor with you,' and, in a separate incident, verbally abused her husband in a way that again caused fear. The court heard there was no physical violence and that the woman had voluntarily left the home as a condition of bail. She has no previous convictions. After reading victim impact statements from both the husband and the couple's daughter, Judge Fottrell said the breaches were 'very serious matters' and that the court was 'particularly concerned about the emotional impact on the child". "Not to preach to the defendant,' he said, 'but the effect this has had on the child is very concerning - and that's going to take time to repair.' He noted the victim - her husband, had spoken 'with a heavy heart', and described the accused as 'obviously someone with personal difficulties". Defence counsel, Andrew Forde BL, said the woman had been married to the victim for a long period and was previously the main earner in the household but developed alcohol issues after being made redundant. She is now nine months into recovery and fully engaged with treatment at the Rutland Centre. Judge Fottrell said he was 'not convinced a custodial sentence was appropriate", given the woman's guilty plea, work history and ongoing efforts to address her issues. "I believe she has made efforts to turn things around,' he said. 'But the statement from her child provided to the court today was very concerning. I hope you've learned your lesson in all of this.' He convicted her and imposed a €500 fine, with six months to pay. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.
