Heartbreaking weekend ahead for Jota families

Extra.iea day ago
The funerals of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva will begin tomorrow afternoon in Portugal, just a day after both men died in a road smash in Northwestern Spain.
Its believed the brothers were on their way to catch a ferry from Santander to the UK after Diogo Jota had been advised by doctors not to fly, following recent lung surgery.
The wake for the Liverpool and Portugal ace and his younger brother, will take place in São Cosme Chapel about half an hour from their home city of Porto, where Diogo Jota married his childhood sweetheart Rute, just a fortnight ago. The wake will begin at 3pm and its expected thousands of fans and proud residents of Porto and beyond, will turn out to show their respects to the families of the two men.
The funeral mass will then take place on Saturday morning at 10am at the Catholic church next door, the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar.
This afternoon, hearses were spotted arriving at a funeral home in the Spanish town of Puebla de Sanabria, in northwestern Spain, where the bodies of 28 year old Diogo Jota and André Silva Jota, who was 26 were taken after the horror crash. Its believed the freak accident happened when a tyre on Jotas Green Lamborghini Huracan blew out while he was overtaking another vehicle on the A-52 near Zamora, just ten miles from the Portuguese border. Liverpool are due to start pre-season training on Monday, and Jota was heading back to the UK by road and ferry, with his brother, due to concerns about flying so soon after lung surgery.
Like Jota, André Silva was also an academy graduate of FC Porto, impressing coaches during his time with the reserve side before making his debut with the first team in 2015 and then going on to play for Frankfurt, Milan and RB Leipzig in 2021. He was currently signed to the Portuguese side FC Penafiel.
André Silva was also just recently married to his long time sweetheart Maria Rodriguez.

She made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, and also featured at the 2021 Games in Tokyo, where injury also hampered her preparations. Mageean was crowned 2022 Athletics Ireland Athlete of the Year, and took the Middle Distance honour in 2024.
