KFSHRC Successfully Performs Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty on Kidney Transplant Recipient
According to a press release from KFSHRC, this procedure represents a major advancement in delivering safe and effective treatment options for transplant recipients, with the goal of improving graft longevity and enhancing overall quality of life.
ESG
Unlike traditional surgical sleeve gastrectomy, ESG is a minimally invasive, incision-free procedure. It is performed by inserting an endoscope through the mouth to suture the stomach from the inside, thereby reducing its volume. This method is particularly beneficial for transplant patients, as it minimizes surgical risks while supporting weight loss and improved metabolic health.
The primary objective of the procedure was to combat obesity and related metabolic disorders—key factors that can adversely affect kidney transplant outcomes, heighten cardiovascular risk, and reduce long-term patient survival.
Moreover, the ESG was carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Ehab Abufarhaneh, Consultant in Adult Transplant Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
KFSHRC continues to be recognized for its excellence in healthcare. It has been ranked the top academic medical center in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally among the world's 250 leading Academic Medical Centers for the third consecutive year. It also holds the title of the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, according to the 2025 Brand Finance rankings. Furthermore, KFSHRC was named among the World's Best Smart Hospitals for 2025 by Newsweek magazine.

Saudi Arabia to host 8th Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh in October
RIYADH: The eighth annual Global Health Exhibition will take place from Oct. 27 to 30 at the Riyadh Exhibition and Convention Center, the Ministry of Health said on Thursday. The aim of the event, the theme for which is 'Invest in Health,' is to help accelerate the transformation of the Kingdom's healthcare sector in line with the goals of the Vision 2030 plan for national development and diversification, the Saudi Press Agency reported, while strengthening Saudi Arabia's position as a global hub for health innovation and investment. The four-day exhibition will give health sector leaders, investors and innovators from around the world the chance to explore partnership and investment opportunities, and showcase the latest advances in healthcare technology, including developments in telemedicine, digital health and preventative care. Organizers hope this year's event will further boost momentum in the rapidly evolving Saudi health sector, building on the success of last year's exhibition that attracted more than 100,000 visitors from 80 countries, who signed deals worth more than SR50 billion ($13.3 billion). The event also reflects the Kingdom's growing influence on the global health stage, according to organizers. Recent Saudi initiatives such as the National Biotechnology Strategy and the hosting of high-profile international gatherings — including the Fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance in November 2024, and the upcoming 2nd annual CPHI Middle East pharmaceutical expo scheduled for December — highlight the nation's commitment to shaping the future of healthcare, they said. The exhibition aims to serve as a key platform for fostering collaborations and driving investment in technologies and initiatives that support healthier, more sustainable communities across the region and beyond, the organizers added.

Rare kidney operation performed at King Faisal Specialist Hospital
RIYADH: King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh recently performed a rare Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty on a patient who had previously undergone a kidney transplant. In a statement, KFSHRC said the operation was considered 'the first of its kind in the region.' It required 'meticulous management of immunosuppressive medications and the prevention of any complications that could jeopardize the transplanted organ. 'This procedure marks a significant advancement in providing safe treatment solutions for transplant recipients, to improve their graft survival and quality of life.' The ESG procedure differs from surgical sleeve gastrectomy in that it requires no abdominal incisions, which is important for transplant patients. Instead, it uses an endoscope inserted through the mouth to suture the stomach internally, effectively reducing its volume and enabling the patient to lose weight and improve overall health. The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team of experts led by Dr. Ehab Abufarhaneh, consultant in adult transplant gastroenterology and hepatology. The team included gastroenterologists, various transplant surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff. In the statement, the hospital said it was 'adopting innovative techniques tailored to the unique needs of transplant patients and developing treatment protocols that address post-transplant challenges.' The facility 'reinforces its position as a regional referral hub for cases beyond the scope of conventional treatment pathways,' and as a leading healthcare provider in the region. It was fulfilling its vision of being the optimal choice for patients supported by an integrated ecosystem of education, research, and clinical excellence that aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, the hospital stated. The hospital has been ranked by Brand Financing 2025 as first in the Middle East and North Africa, and 15th globally on the list of the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers for the third consecutive year. Additionally, it was included in the World's Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine.
