India's May palm oil imports surge 84% m/m to hit six-month high
Higher imports of palm and soyoil by India, the world's biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could support Malaysian palm oil prices and U.S. soyoil futures.
Palm oil imports rose 84 per cent in May from April to stand at 592,888 metric tons, the highest since November 2024, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) said.
India imported an average of more than 750,000 tons of palm oil each month during the marketing year that ended in October 2024, the SEA said.
Imports of soyoil increased 10.4 per cent to 398,585 tons, the highest since January, and sunflower oil imports rose 1.9 per cent to 183,555 tons, it added.
Higher imports of palm oil and soyoil lifted India's total vegetable oil imports in May by 33 per cent from a month before to 1.19 million tons, the highest since December, it said.
Below-average imports from January to April reduced domestic vegetable oil stocks to 1.33 million tons by June 1, the lowest since July 2020, according to SEA data.
Palm oil imports are likely to increase further in June and could rise to about 850,000 tons, as the oil is trading at a discount to soyoil, said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, an edible oil trader.
Soyoil imports
in June will hold steady around 400,000 tons, Patel said.
India buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine.
Vegetable oil imports are expected to pick up in the coming months as this month's duty cut will help boost demand, said a New Delhi-based trader.
India halved the basic import tax on crude edible oils to 10 per cent in a bid to reduce food prices and help the domestic refining industry.

‘Now a household name': Astronomer's new CEO on company being in the ‘spotlight' after Coldplay kiss cam ‘scandal'
Days after the 'kiss cam scandal' from a Coldplay concert went viral, US tech company Astronomer's new interim CEO Pete DeJoy, in his first statement on Monday, said that 'the events of the past few days have received a level of media attention that few companies—let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world—ever encounter'. Even though he would never wish for such an incident to happen 'like this', he added that Astronomer is 'now a household name'. 'The spotlight has been unusual and surreal for our team,' DeJoy said. The New York-based company landed in controversy after two of its employees— Andy Byron, the former CEO of tech firm Astronomer, and Kristin Cabot, the company's Chief People Officer— were found embracing each other in a video relayed on a giant screen during a Coldplay concert held in Boston. 'Over the weekend, I stepped into the role of Interim CEO at Astronomer, a company that I've proudly poured my entire professional life into helping build,' DeJoy said in a post on LinkedIn, a day after former CEO Byron resigned from his position following the controversy. In the viral video clip, two people are seen with their arms wrapped around each other. As soon as the footage of Byron and Cabot was relayed on a giant screen during the concert, they abruptly ducked and hid from the camera. Coldplay Singer Chris Martin is heard saying: 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy.' Further, the new interim CEO said: 'At Astronomer, we have never shied away from challenges; a near-decade of building this business has tested us time and time again, and each time we've emerged stronger. From starting a software company in Cincinnati, Ohio, to keeping the lights on through the collapse of the bank that held all our cash, to scaling from 30 to 300 people during a global pandemic that demanded we do it all without ever being in the same room.' 'I'm stepping into this role with a wholehearted commitment to taking care of our people and delivering for our customers. Astronomer's foundation remains strong, built around the thriving Apache Airflow community. Our opportunity to build a DataOps platform for the age of AI remains massive. And our story is very much still being written,' he added.

Microsoft server hack hit about 100 organizations, researchers say
A sweeping cyber espionage operation targeting Microsoft server software compromised about 100 organizations as of the weekend, two of the organizations that helped uncover the campaign said on Monday. Microsoft on Saturday issued an alert about 'active attacks' on self-hosted SharePoint servers, which are widely used by organizations to share documents and collaborate within organizations. SharePoint instances run off of Microsoft servers were unaffected. Dubbed a 'zero-day' because it leverages a previously undisclosed digital weakness, the hacks allow spies to penetrate vulnerable servers and potentially drop a backdoor to secure continuous access to victim organizations. Vaisha Bernard, the chief hacker at Eye Security, a Netherlands-based cybersecurity firm, which discovered the hacking campaign targeting one of its clients on Friday, said that an internet scan carried out with the Shadowserver Foundation had uncovered nearly 100 victims altogether – and that was before the technique behind the hack was widely known. 'It's unambiguous,' Bernard said. 'Who knows what other adversaries have done since to place other backdoors.' He declined to identify the affected organizations, saying that the relevant national authorities had been notified. The Shadowserver Foundation confirmed the 100 figure. It said most of those affected were in the United States and Germany, and the victims included government organizations. Another researcher said that, so far, the spying appeared to be the work of a single hacker or set of hackers. 'It's possible that this will quickly change,' said Rafe Pilling, director of Threat Intelligence at Sophos, a British cybersecurity firm. Microsoft said it had 'provided security updates and encourages customers to install them,' a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement. It was not clear who was behind the ongoing hack, but Alphabet's Google, which has visibility into wide swaths of internet traffic, said it tied at least some of the hacks to a 'China-nexus threat actor.' The Chinese Embassy in Washington didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment; Beijing routinely denies carrying out hacking operations. The FBI said on Sunday it was aware of the attacks and was working closely with its federal and private-sector partners, but offered no other details. Britain's National Cyber Security Center said in a statement that it was aware of 'a limited number' of targets in the United Kingdom. A researcher tracking the campaign said that the campaign appeared initially aimed at a narrow set of government-related organizations. The pool of potential targets remains vast. According to data from Shodan, a search engine that helps to identify internet-linked equipment, over 8,000 servers online could theoretically have already been compromised by hackers. Shadowserver put the number at a little more than 9,000, while cautioning that the figure was a minimum. Those servers include major industrial firms, banks, auditors, healthcare companies, and several U.S. state-level and international government entities. 'The SharePoint incident appears to have created a broad level of compromise across a range of servers globally,' said Daniel Card of British cybersecurity consultancy PwnDefend. 'Taking an assumed breach approach is wise, and it's also important to understand that just applying the patch isn't all that is required here.'

C K Venkataraman, managing director of Titan, said, 'After successfully establishing Tanishq in the GCC countries and the USA, our ambition for a global jewellery play is moving to the next stage. With the Damas acquisition, Titan Company is stepping out from its diaspora focus into other nationalities and ethnicities.' 'Damas is a prestigious brand revered in the GCC markets for its product innovation, quality and customer experience. The brand's rich legacy and strong presence in the GCC region align perfectly with our vision to deliver exceptional value to customers through iconic, consumer-focused businesses. The acquisition not only creates a significant new global opportunity for Titan, but also enhances Titan"s overall position in the jewellery market in the GCC countries and brings in multiple synergy benefits in talent, retail networks and supply chain. We are happy to welcome Damas into the Titan family. We look forward to building on Damas' rich heritage while driving the brand's sustainable growth journey together with Mannai Corporation," Venkataraman added. As part of the transaction, Titan Holdings will acquire the 67 per cent shareholding, subject to the fulfillment of conditions precedent outlined in the agreement, along with necessary regulatory approvals in applicable jurisdictions. 'The valuation for acquisition of 67 per cent of the target entity for the Proposed Transaction is arrived at on the basis of an Enterprise Value (EV) of AED 1,038 million. The net consideration would be subject to customary adjustments for debt/cash/ other adjustments,' Titan said, in a statement. Additionally, after December 31, 2029, Mannai will have the right to sell, and Titan Holdings will have the right to acquire the remaining 33 per cent stake in Damas LLC. This future transaction will be governed by terms and conditions set forth in the definitive agreement. Kuwaij and Bahrain. The region is exhibiting robust economic growth creating a demand for differentiated, high quality offerings rooted in Arabian aesthetic and appealing to sophisticated clientele seeking unique, culturally resonant designs,' Titan added. JM Financial on Titan-Damas Deal Analysts at JM Financial noted that Titan's acquisition of a 67 per cent stake in Damas LLC marks a major strategic move, granting the company access to the Damas jewellery business (excluding the Graff Monobrand franchise). The deal values Damas at an enterprise value of AED 1,038 million, or 0.7x EV/sales for CY24. The brokerage highlighted several positives from the transaction. It positions Titan among the top 3-4 players in the world's fourth-largest jewellery market, provides access to 146 premium retail locations in the UAE, and presents an opportunity to boost profitability in the GCC region through synergies across talent, retail networks, and supply chains. JM Financial, however, is not incorporating the acquisition into its financial estimates yet, pending more granular details such as profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow data. However, the brokerage maintains a 'Buy' rating on Titan with a target price of ₹3,725, valuing it at 57x Mar'27 EPS. Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley reportedly has maintained its 'Overweight' stance on Titan, with a target price of ₹3,876 per share.
