Green Falcons ready to soar against Arkadag

Arab Times08-04-2025
KUWAIT CITY, April 8: Al-Arabi will take on Turkmenistan's Arkadag at 7:00 pm today at Jaber Al-Mubarak Stadium in the first leg of the AFC Challenge League semi-finals.
The second semi-final match will take place tomorrow (Thursday), featuring Cambodia's Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng against Indonesia's Madura United.
This will be the second meeting between Al-Arabi and Arkadag. The Green Falcons previously edged Arkadag 3-2 during the group stage, which they hosted last October. That victory helped Al-Arabi qualify as the best second-placed team before progressing past Oman's Al-Seeb in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win in the first leg and a 2-2 draw in the return leg.
Al-Arabi has intensified its preparations for this key fixture with a focused training camp. The team aims to secure a strong result at home ahead of the second leg next Wednesday.
The match also comes amid a dip in domestic form. Recent 1-1 draws against Al-Salmiya and Al-Fahaheel saw the Green Falcons slip to second place in the Zain Premier League standings—four points behind leaders Kuwait Club, with only four rounds left to play.
Head coach Nasser Al-Shatti underlined the importance of the continental tournament, saying, 'The AFC Challenge League is one of our primary goals this season.'
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Al-Shatti stressed the need for his players to show resilience and recover from recent league results. He voiced full confidence in his squad, especially goalkeeper Suleiman Abdul Ghafoor, stating, 'His performance remains a cornerstone of the team's strength.'
On the other side, Arkadag's Coach, Ahmed Alaa, expressed ambitions for a strong away result, but acknowledged the quality of his opponent. 'Al-Arabi is not an easy team. The semi-final is a different scenario than the group stage, and we've made adjustments to our squad accordingly.'
The Asian Football Confederation has assigned a South Korean refereeing crew to officiate the match. Choi Hyun-jae will serve as the head referee, assisted by Chun Jin-hee and Bang Gi-wol, while Chae Sang-hyup will act as the fourth official.

Kuwait volleyball team ends West Asia campaign in fifth place

MANAMA, July 26: Kuwait's national volleyball team wrapped up its campaign at the inaugural West Asia Championship by securing fifth place, following a commanding 3-0 win over the UAE in the fifth-place playoff match. The sets ended 25-17, 30-28, and 25-17 in favor of Al-Azraq. In another placement match, Jordan defeated Lebanon 3-0 to take seventh place. Kuwait had a challenging start to the tournament, opening with a 0-3 loss to Oman — a result that had a lasting impact on its progression. Despite bouncing back with a 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia and a close 2-3 loss to Qatar, Kuwait finished fourth in Group B. This set up a quarterfinal clash with Group A winner Bahrain, which ended in a 0-3 defeat. However, Al-Azraq responded strongly in the classification stage, defeating both Jordan and the UAE to claim fifth place overall. Player Abdulnasser Al-Enezi expressed mixed feelings after the final match. While pleased with the team's win over the UAE, he voiced disappointment at missing out on the semifinals. 'Fifth place wasn't our ambition — we were aiming for a spot in the final four,' he said. 'Arriving just one day before the start of the tournament affected our performance against Oman, and that impacted our path in the competition.' Al-Enezi added that the team includes several promising young players and stressed the importance of continued support and development to help them reach their full potential.

Ahmad Hayel joins Al-Arabi camp in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, July 26: Al-Arabi has officially kicked off its overseas training camp in Abu Dhabi, UAE, ahead of a crucial phase in its season preparations. The camp, which runs until August 8, includes two friendly fixtures—against Hatta on July 31 and Baniyas in early August. Jordanian assistant coach Ahmad Hayel and Ugandan defender Kenneth Semakula joined the squad earlier this week to reinforce the technical and player lineup. Following the conclusion of the Abu Dhabi camp, Al-Arabi will travel to the Maldives on August 8 to face Maziya Sports Club in a decisive AFC Challenge Cup playoff match scheduled for August 12 at 3:00 PM (local time) at the National Football Stadium. The winner will advance to the group stage of the competition. This camp represents the second stage of Al-Arabi's preseason program, after launching the first phase of training last week under Portuguese head coach Marco Alves, with the majority of players present. Al-Arabi has secured four new foreign signings: French-Guinean Hassimi Fadiga, Ugandan Kenneth Semakula, and Nigerian duo Ayano Iwala and Christopher John. The club is also in talks to finalize the fifth foreign player spot. Additionally, local talents Hamad Al-Harbi and Aziz Nassari have joined the squad. Club media coordinator Mishaal Al-Abkal confirmed that all logistical arrangements are progressing smoothly. He noted that the team has been holding daily training sessions, with morning workouts indoors and evening sessions on an outdoor pitch. Al-Abkal added that the team is awaiting the arrival of a new striker in the coming days, as agreed upon by the club's foreign player recruitment committee.

Shabib Al-Khaldi cleared to rejoin training after doping ban reduced

KUWAIT CITY, July 24: The Kuwait Anti-Doping Agency has reduced the suspension of Kazma and Kuwait national team player Shabib Al-Khaldi, allowing him to resume training with his club starting August 25. Initially banned for two years starting February 26, 2024, the sanction was imposed after Al-Khaldi refused to undergo a doping test during the Super Cup final between Kazma and Kuwait Club in January. The Arab Club delegation departed today for the UAE to begin their second phase of preseason training, which runs until August 8. The camp includes two friendly matches against Hatta and Baniyas before the team travels to the Maldives for a crucial AFC Challenge League playoff against Maziya Sports Club on August 12. The team is led by Portuguese coach Marco Alves and recently completed its first training phase last week, with most players in attendance. Arabi has bolstered its squad with two new foreign signings—French-Guinean midfielder Hassimi Fadiga and Ugandan striker Kenneth Semakula—joining existing Nigerian imports Ayano Iwuala and Christopher John. The club is also negotiating to sign a fifth foreign player. Local additions include Hamed Al-Harbi and Aziz Nassari. Assistant coaches Ahmad Hael and Kenneth Semakula are expected to join the camp today or tomorrow. Meanwhile, sources suggest that former Kuwait Club midfielder Talal Al-Fadhel is close to joining Arabi after his release from the club. According to Iraqi media reports, Qadsiya's Rashid Al-Dossari and Arabi's Bandar Al-Salama have drawn interest from multiple Iraqi clubs for potential transfers in the upcoming season. Preseason training kicks off tomorrow for Salmiya, Fahaheel, and Nasr as they prepare for the new 2024-2025 Zain Premier League season, which begins on September 12. Other teams, including Arabi, Qadisiya, Kuwait Club, Kazma, and Yarmouk, have already started training earlier this month.
