SINGAPORE: An ageing workforce will be a key challenge over the next decade, but 'Singapore can prove to be the exception', says Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) president Tan Hee Teck.
In other economies, he noted that ageing populations are often a drag on economic growth.
Singapore has been working on ways to formulate policies that expand job opportunities for senior workers while enhancing workforce flexibility and productivity.
The upcoming Tripartite Workgroup on Senior Employment, for instance, is a timely initiative that will bring the unions, employers and government together to work on solutions that tap the potential and wisdom of senior workers, he said in his May Day message on April 29.
The work group, which will be set up later in 2025, aims to improve the employability of seniors and increase the availability of jobs that better suit their needs.
The work group will start by setting up the Alliance for Action on Empowering Multi-Stage Careers for Mature Workers, which involves engaging employers for ideas and solutions to enhance senior employment.
On the economy, Tan noted that Singapore achieved robust economic growth of 4.4% in 2024, an uptick from the 1.8% expansion in 2023.
'This growth is particularly impressive amidst global economic uncertainties,' he said.
He reiterated SNEF's commitment in being the voice for employers, supporting them in building more progressive workplaces and ensuring workplace fairness in Singapore.
He added that employers who embrace diversity and inclusion benefit from stronger talent attraction and retention. — The Straits Times/ANN

Vietnam Stands At Core Of Evolving ASEAN: Malaysian Ambassador

Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Datuk Tan Yang Thai delivering his speech at the halal seminar in Hanoi on Wednesday. HANOI, July 25 (Bernama-VNA) -- Vietnam continues to hold a central position in an ever-evolving Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Datuk Tan Yang Thai has said. Vietnam News Agency (VNA) in an interview with Tan in conjunction with 30th anniversary of Vietnam's accession to ASEAN, reported Tan highlighted Vietnam's prominent and active contributions to the ASEAN community-building process, especially during the bloc's transformation from a loosely structured regional organisation into a rules-based community. Vietnam made its mark early with the Hanoi Plan of Action (HPA) in 1998, hosting the 6th ASEAN Summit, and leading the bloc's first formal workplan towards the ASEAN Vision 2020, he said. bootstrap slideshow The country, which formally join ASEAN on July 28, 1995, also strongly supported the establishment of key ASEAN mechanisms during this period, such as the ASEAN Plus Three, the East Asia Summit (EAS), and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), expanding the bloc's dialogue partnerships and global reach. He said notably, Vietnam's Chairmanship in 2020, during the peak of COVID-19, demonstrated its strong leadership in crisis diplomacy. For the first time in history, Vietnam hosted the ASEAN Summit virtually, alongside the establishment of the ASEAN COVID-19 Response Fund, and the implementation of coordinated regional recovery measures, demonstrating the bloc's solidarity and flexible response capability. After 30 years, Vietnam has evolved from a new entrant into a credible, constructive, and consensus-building member of ASEAN, the diplomat said, noting that its performance reflects increasing confidence, growing diplomatic weight, and a strong commitment to regional peace, prosperity, and shared identity - well aligned with the goals of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. According to the ambassador, Vietnam has emerged as one of ASEAN's most dynamic economies, making significant contributions to ASEAN's global trade profile and serving as an attractive destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region. Tan also highlighted the fruitful development in Vietnam-Malaysia bilateral relations in recent years, noting the recent upgrade of their ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership marks a timely and historic step.

Low water pressure issues unacceptable, says Penang MCA

GEORGE TOWN: Penang MCA has urged the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) to resolve the persistent low water pressure issues affecting thousands of residents in South Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai and parts of the island. Its state liaison committee chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said the continued disruptions, especially during peak hours, are completely unacceptable and highlight inefficiencies in PBAPP's operations. "Despite implementing a major water tariff hike, PBAPP has failed to deliver service quality that justifies such a drastic increase. "Tariff hikes should come with improvements, not deteriorations in service," he said in a statement on Friday (July 25). Tan, who is MCA vice-president, said instead, consumers, especially those living in higher-ground areas like Taman Cendana and Juru, are now forced to endure low water pressure and even dry taps for hours. He said what's even more glaring is the fact that PBAPP's holding company, PBA Holdings Bhd (PBAHB), recorded a substantial pre-tax profit of RM68.4mil in 2023, marking a 107.3% increase from RM32.998mil in 2022. He said this begs the question that if profits have more than doubled, why are Penangites still facing basic water supply issues? Tan said this situation could not come at a worse time. "With news reports that over 100,000 domestic and foreign Catholic pilgrims and tourists expected to arrive at the Minor Basilica of St Anne in Bukit Mertajam for St Anne's Feast Day, and many of them travelling to the island for sightseeing and leisure, Penang is at risk of giving a poor impression to both local and international visitors, besides the inconvenience of low water pressure where water usage is very essential," he said. Tan said this does not just affect the image of the state, and will directly impacts the tourism industry, small businesses, and state's economy. He urged PBAPP to provide immediate, transparent updates and timelines on remedial actions. "Penangites and visitors to Penang deserve a water management system that is resilient, forward-looking, and capable of coping with growing demand—not one that collapses under seasonal pressure or rapid development," he said. He said that mere acknowledgements and long-term promises are no longer enough. He added PBAPP must prioritise consumers over profit margins and take full accountability for its underperformance. Earlier today, PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan said the corporation has implemented immediate measures to reduce disruptions and low water pressure during peak hours in several areas across the state, particularly in South Seberang Perai amid the current hot weather. He also said that the company's move to optimise its pipeline system, including valve adjustments to channel more water to affected areas, has helped shorten the duration of interruptions. Currently, consumers experience low water pressure during the peak hours between 6pm and 11pm, but efforts are ongoing to reduce the disruption to just two to three hours daily. Among affected areas are Sungai Bakap, Nibong Tebal, Jawi, Simpang Ampat, Bukit Tambun, and Batu Kawan. Other impacted locations are Bukit Penara and Balik Pulau in the Southwest District, as well as several parts of Seberang Perai Tengah.

Intel shares slide on quarterly loss, foundry business exit risk

FILE PHOTO: A smartphone with a displayed Intel logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/ File Photo (Reuters) -Intel shares fell 5% in premarket trading on Friday after the chipmaker forecast steeper-than-expected quarterly losses and warned of a potential exit from its foundry business despite new CEO Lip-Bu Tan's turnaround plans. Tan on Thursday hinted at departing from ex-CEO Pat Gelsinger's core strategy, warning that without demand-backed investment, Intel risks exiting the foundry business, jeopardizing $100 billion in assets and increasing its reliance on TSMC. As part of its foundry business reform, the company may reserve the advanced 18A manufacturing process for its products and proceed with 14A only if a major external partner commits, Tan stated in a post-conference call. "Intel Foundry is a big story, and currently people are questioning how successful 18A is. A failure in 18A would be a broken story," said Hendi Susanto, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds. Intel also halted or scrapped several fab projects in the U.S. and Europe, citing financial discipline. Once a leader in American chipmaking, Intel has lost ground after years of strategic missteps, lagging far behind rivals Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices. The company's stock has gained 12.8% so far this year, while Nvidia and AMD have jumped about 30% and 34%, respectively. Since taking the helm in March, Tan has divested businesses, laid off employees and redirected resources as part of his strategic reset to revive the embattled chipmaker. "There are no more blank checks," Tan wrote in a memo to employees on Thursday, announcing further job cuts as Intel aims to reduce its workforce by 22% to 75,000 by year-end. "I don't think he's scaling back… I think they're maybe redirecting. I would prefer them to build it out, but only if they have customer commitments," said Ryuta Makino, analyst at Gabelli Funds, who's also an Intel shareholder. Intel trades at a 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio of 42.55 versus 33.90 for Nvidia and 32.12 for AMD.
