PETALING JAYA: Due to overwhelming public interest for the upcoming Asean Summit in October, the National Art Gallery has decided to extend the 'A Gift from Asean Exhibition' until Dec 31.
'Launched on Feb 17, the exhibition features 33 unique artworks presented to Malaysia by Asean members and Asean+6 nations such as South Korea, Japan, China and India, between 1960 and 2009,' said the National Visual Arts Development Board in a statement yesterday.
It said the exhibition was initially scheduled to end on July 31.
'This initiative reflects Malaysia's commitment to making art and culture a core pillar in strengthening regional ties and promoting art as an effective medium of cultural diplomacy.
'These works reflect strong diplomatic relations and a shared cultural heritage through diverse visual art expressions.
'This exhibition supports Asean 2025 aspirations to promote unity in diversity by using visual arts as a catalyst for knowledge sharing,' the statement said.
It also said artworks by prominent artists included those from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, China and India.
According to the website of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia, the artworks on display 'clearly show that while art from this region has many different styles and histories, these differences are also somehow linked, and influences are still present and even blend with the modern art being created in the region today'.
The public is invited to visit the exhibition, which is open daily from 9am to 5pm at the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur.

#SHOWBIZ: Asean countries form joint film production network

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to lead efforts to develop the Southeast Asian film industry through the inaugural Asean Film and TV Summit, which was launched yesterday. Deputy Communications Minister, Teo Nie Ching, said that the summit's primary objective is to build collaborative productions among filmmakers from Asean countries. "This three-day summit aims for the establishment of co-productions amongst filmmakers from Asean, a region with a large market and an estimated population of 600 million," she said. "We will discuss filmmaking ideas, innovations, and infrastructure to boost the film industries of Asean countries." Teo was speaking at the summit's opening ceremony, held at GSC MyTown Mall in Cheras. The event is being held in conjunction with the 8th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) and is supported by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), the Asian Film Alliance Network (AFAN), and the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM). Teo expressed confidence that the summit would lead to the creation of an action plan to strengthen film collaborations between Asean countries. "Although Malaysia has signed co-production agreements with several countries, we do not yet have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Asean level," she said. The launch was also attended by MIFFest founder Joanne Goh, Finas Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, AFAN Secretary-General Lorna Tee, and MBM Vice President Dhanesh Basil. Azmir stated that the event aims to create various new projects through training and collaboration, providing an opportunity for local stories to penetrate the international market. "I hope we all take the opportunity to explore new ideas, get to know new collaborators, and engage in discussions. This event is an opportunity for us to collectively shape the future of ASEAN cinema," he said.
