Palmeiras 1-2 Chelsea: Goalkeeper howler sends Blues into Club World Cup semi-final

Yahoo10-07-2025
Chelsea edged past Palmeiras to reach the Club World Cup semi-finals as Estevao Willian scored against his future club.
Cole Palmer put the Blues ahead in the first half with a fine solo effort, holding off two challenges before cooly slotting inside the far post.

Chelsea could - and perhaps should - have added to their tally before the break, with Liam Delap and Marc Cucurella missing good chances after being set up by the impressive Pedro Neto.
Delap struggled to assert himself against the Palmeiras, and his frustrations boiled over in the form of multiple first-half fouls, and then a booking - which rules him out of the semi-final.
And that wastefulness was punished by Estevao, who beat Robert Sanchez from the tightest of angles soon after the restart.
Taking the ball inside the area, the teenager took two touches and unleashed a shot inside the near post, which flew into the top of the net.

The game really opened up thereafter, with Joao Pedro thrown on for his debut by replacing the ineffective Delap, and Arsenal target Noni Madueke producing far more than the quiet Christopher Nkunku.
Both Pedro and Madueke were denied by Weverton, before Malo Gusto's cross-cum-shot was turned into his own net by the Palmeiras goalkeeper seven minutes from time.
There was still time for Levi Colwill to pick up a booking, and thus rule himself out of the semi-final and hand Enzo Maresca another selection headache, after Reece James was a late withdrawal from the starting line-up with an injury.
Chelsea will face Fluminense on Tuesday.

Chelsea set price tag over £30m for in-demand midfielder

Chelsea will demand a fee in excess of £30m for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, following a formal approach from Fulham. Dewsbury-Hall is attracting interest from several Premier League teams after struggling for a regular role at Chelsea. West Ham enquired into the 26-year-old's availability earlier in the window, while Everton are also monitoring his situation. Fulham have now formalised their interest with an approach to sign Dewsbury-Hall. Chelsea are not actively looking to sell the midfielder but will consider bids for the right price. Journalist Ben Jacobs has said the West Londoners are seeking a profit on the £30m paid to sign Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City last summer. The midfielder reunited with former Foxes manager Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge but has been unable to earn a regular role. He featured for just 259 minutes in the Premier League last season, making just two appearances from the start. Dewsbury-Hall has previously impressed under Maresca at Leicester. He scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists as Leicester won the Championship title in 2023/24. Read – See more – Follow The Football Faithful on Social Media:

How does Madueke's new homegrown status affect Arsenal?

Arsenal's homegrown situation has changed with the news that Noni Madueke is now considered a homegrown player by the Premier League. Photo via Arsenal summer signing Noni Madueke was listed as a non-homegrown player in Chelsea's Premier League squad last season, which was believed to be because his time with Tottenham Hotspur's academy was when he was still just a schoolboy – leaving at 16 years old. Yet the Premier League rules don't specifically give a lower age limit to obtain homegrown status, and The Athletic confirm that the player has now been reclassified as homegrown. The change was actually made earlier this year, before the end of the 2024/25 campaign, with Chelsea or Madueke's camp presumably pushing for it. Arsenal will just reap the benefits. But whilst it's nice that Madueke is homegrown from a Premier League perspective, UEFA rules require that you spend three seasons with an English or Welsh club specifically between the ages of 15 and 21. So Madueke still won't count as homegrown in European competition. Though the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri remain too young to need including on the senior squad list. In the Premier League, Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri can be named on the unlimited u21 list. In UEFA competitions, they can be included on 'List B', which is the u21 list equivalent. The same is true for Cristhian Mosquera, who is young enough to be left off the Premier League senior list this season. But again, UEFA's rules are different, and Mosquera can't be included on their u21 list as he's been at the club for less than two years. He'll have to be named as a senior player. As you can see above, Arsenal have 24 senior players from the Premier League's point of view, just 15 of whom are non-homegrown. So there's space for the imminent addition of Viktor Gyokeres without causing any issue. Arsenal's Champions League squad Arsenal sign Cristhian Mosquera (via Arrizabalaga, Kepa Calafiori, Riccardo Havertz, Kai Hein, Karl* Jesus, Gabriel Kiwior, Jakub Madueke, Noni Magalhães, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel* Merino, Mikel Mosquera, Cristhian Nelson, Reiss* Norgaard, Christian Odegaard, Martin Raya, David* Rice, Declan* Saka, Bukayo* Saliba, William* Sambi Lokonga, Albert Timber, Jurrien Trossard, Leandro Vieira, Fabio White, Benjamin* Zinchenko, Oleksandr Zubimendi, Martin *Homegrown The situation is trickier here. As mentioned above, Mosquera has to be included as a senior player, and Madueke is not homegrown from UEFA's perspective. So adding Gyokeres will put Arsenal at 26 players for a 25-man squad, and 18 non-homegrown players with a limit of 17. A non-homegrown player has to go. If the Gunners want to sign homegrown Eberechi Eze as well, they'd then have to sell or loan a second player, though it wouldn't matter if that player was homegrown or not. There are clearly some candidates for a sale or loan, notably the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Reiss Nelson, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Fabio Vieira, and Oleksandr Zinchenko. But there hasn't been significant progress on any of those fronts just yet.

Chelsea spree set to continue as talks advance for midfielder

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Xavi Simons with talks for the RB Leipzig midfielder at an advanced stage. Enzo Maresca's side are set to take their spending this summer north of £250m with the arrival of the Netherlands international. Simons will become the latest attacking addition for the Blues, following the arrivals of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens during the current window. Fabrizio Romano is reporting that negotiations with Leipzig are at an advanced stage. Talks have also progressed positively regarding personal terms. Leipzig are understood to be seeking a fee of around €70m (£61.1m) for the 22-year-old, who impressed individually despite a difficult 2024/25 campaign for the German side. Simons scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in 25 Bundesliga starts last season. The previous year saw Simons included in the division's Team of the Year. Leipzig are prepared to sanction his sale after missing out on European football for next season. Read – See more – Follow The Football Faithful on Social Media:
