Palmeiras 1-2 Chelsea: Goalkeeper howler sends Blues into Club World Cup semi-final

Chelsea edged past Palmeiras to reach the Club World Cup semi-finals as Estevao Willian scored against his future club. Cole Palmer put the Blues ahead in the first half with a fine solo effort, holding off two challenges before cooly slotting inside the far post. Advertisement Chelsea could - and perhaps should - have added to their tally before the break, with Liam Delap and Marc Cucurella missing good chances after being set up by the impressive Pedro Neto. Delap struggled to assert himself against the Palmeiras, and his frustrations boiled over in the form of multiple first-half fouls, and then a booking - which rules him out of the semi-final. And that wastefulness was punished by Estevao, who beat Robert Sanchez from the tightest of angles soon after the restart. Taking the ball inside the area, the teenager took two touches and unleashed a shot inside the near post, which flew into the top of the net. Advertisement The game really opened up thereafter, with Joao Pedro thrown on for his debut by replacing the ineffective Delap, and Arsenal target Noni Madueke producing far more than the quiet Christopher Nkunku. Both Pedro and Madueke were denied by Weverton, before Malo Gusto's cross-cum-shot was turned into his own net by the Palmeiras goalkeeper seven minutes from time. There was still time for Levi Colwill to pick up a booking, and thus rule himself out of the semi-final and hand Enzo Maresca another selection headache, after Reece James was a late withdrawal from the starting line-up with an injury. Chelsea will face Fluminense on Tuesday.

Chelsea future looking good in 'strange, post-reality world'

Why was Palmeiras youngster Estevao Willian trying so hard for his side against Chelsea this weekend when he is set to become a Blues player after this tournament? The answer is that he is a good pro who will do the right thing and has the right shouldn't even be a question. Every player should always give everything to the team currently employing him, even up until the last moment of the last game. Any player who doesn't has his moral compass badly out of go marching on to the semi-finals with £60m signing Joao Pedro sitting on the bench. Liam Delap and Estevao, who cost another £60m, are waiting in the wings. Jamie Gittens - a snip at £48m from Borussia Dortmund - is also ready to join the far, so Chelsea. But on the same day this week, they were also fined £27m by Uefa for breaching spending of other clubs will be flabbergasted Chelsea can continually keep splashing the cash when they have demonstrably broken the financial rules and bent a few others wildly out of we are in a strange, post-reality world. Getting multi-million pound fines is not considered problematic for the club or for the integrity of the clubs who sweetly and somewhat naively played within the rules must feel stupid as the Blues cruise to the latter stages of the Club World Cup after qualifying for the Champions League last season, particularly when they consider all the massive financial rewards they will doubtless sell some of their multitude of excess players to get money in the short term. Noni Madueke looks a likely now, however, it feels uncomfortable and indeed again, I will admit to selfishly really looking forward to a club I favour being a joy to watch next season with the quality they will have on show... how fickle we fans up to read more from Pat Nevin in his Football Extra newsletter

Estevao Willian snubs Chelsea offer and reveals what Cole Palmer told him after netting against the Blues in Club World Cup quarter-final

Incoming Chelsea wonderkid Estevao Willian turned down an offer to continue his Club World Cup journey with his new club after his current side were dumped out of the competition by his future one. The 18-year-old, who netted for Palmeiras in their 2-1 last-eight defeat, will complete his move to the Blues later this month. The meeting of the two sides put the teenager in a unique win-win situation, a reality quickly manifested in the offer from Cole Palmer to link up with the Blues squad as they made their way to New York for their semi-final clash against Fluminense. But after enlisting the help of fellow new recruit Dario Essugo, whose linguistic skills deciphered the Mancunian accent Palmer's English invitation was delivered in, Estevao declined and insisted that he needed to say a proper goodbye to his soon-to-be former colleagues. 'I had to ask Essugo what Cole had said to me,' said Estevao. 'He laughed a bit before translating, telling me "Cole said he's excited for you and want you to come with us after the game".' 'I wanted to stay some more time with my team pals,' he added. 'I came here with them. And I should go back to Brazil with them. My heart is broken because only we know how hard we worked. 'But I leave with pride. And I am happy to have a giant club as Chelsea opening its doors to me. 'I just wanted to show my new fans in England who I am. That it is all. I hope to learn. I am sure I come to London to evolve, and to make history there too.' After Saturday's match, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca spoke glowingly of the winger, teasing an 'important' role for him. 'You can see he is a huge talent,' Maresca said post-match. 'You can see he is a fantastic player. The only thing now is when you come from South America or another part of the world to Europe you need to adapt. 'We are going to help him to adapt and first of all to enjoy football. We don't have any doubt, as he is so good, that he is going to be an important player for Chelsea.' Palmer made a point of embracing Estevao and swapping shirts with him after the final whistle, despite the language barrier. 'I told Estevao we are excited for you to join but he didn't understand a single word I said,' Palmer said. Chelsea struck a deal to sign the prodigy last year but he stayed in Brazil for one more season, and his talents were on show as he was named the player of the match against his future employers. He will shortly join up with their first-team squad. Estevao was, however, visibly emotional after bringing the curtain down on his time at the club which first thrust him into the spotlight.
