Trump Calls India, Russia "Dead Economies" Tariff Standoff
In response, Trump lashed out on Truth Social media early Thursday morning, labeling India a 'dead economy' and claiming the U.S. does 'very little business' with the country.
'I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care,' Trump wrote on his social media platform.
He continued, 'We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World,' adding, 'Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President, to watch his words. He's entering very dangerous territory!'
On Wednesday morning, Trump fired off another Truth Social post about India, indicating New Delhi faces 25% tariff plus penalties starting on Friday. He criticized India's close ties to Moscow during the Ukraine war, describing them as 'not good,' and emphasized that the U.S. has done relatively little business with India.
It remains unclear whether U.S. and Indian trade negotiators can reach a deal before the deadline. However, Trump's comments on Truth Social suggest the talks are not going well.
A statement from the Indian government yesterday pointed out that a trade deal with the U.S. must be 'mutually beneficial' and protect its farmers and small businesses.
According to analysts at Mumbai-headquartered Axis Bank, 25% tariffs on Indian goods would have a $10 billion impact on exporters.
Société Générale analyst Kunal Kundu said the tariffs could 'dampen domestic sentiment' and 'expectation of maintaining a relative tariff advantage over competitors in labour-intensive exports has been undermined.' He noted that 'disadvantage is not excessively severe.'
'Trump's causing a lot of trouble for Modi,' said Derek Grossman, a former U.S. intelligence official who is now a professor of international relations at the University of Southern California, who Bloomberg quoted.
'A lot of damage has been done today, more than at any time I can remember,' Grossman added. 'I'm not saying that the relationship is going to collapse or anything like that. It'll persist, but I feel like India will be far more circumspect in dealing with America from this point forward.'
So much for all those signs of progress in April when Vice President JD Vance visited India. Vance at the time called a US-India relationship a 'win-win partnership' and sought stronger ties with New Delhi in energy and defense trade.
Important to note: India and Russia are part of the BRICS system, challenging the US status quo.

Trump says to name new economics data official
US President Donald Trump said yesterday that he would pick an 'exceptional replacement' to his labor statistics chief -- after ordering her dismissal as a new report showed weakness in the US jobs market. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated -- without immediately providing evidence -- that an employment report released last Friday 'was rigged.' He alleged that the official had manipulated data to diminish his administration's economic accomplishments. Shortly afterwards, Trump ordered the removal of Erika McEntarfer, the department's commissioner of labor statistics. Trump told reporters Sunday: 'We had no confidence. I mean the numbers were ridiculous.' Trump added that the same official, just before the 2024 election, 'came out with these phenomenal numbers on (Joe) Biden's economy.' He claimed those job numbers were 'a scam.' The United States added 73,000 jobs last month, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent, the Department of Labor reported. Hiring numbers for May were revised down from 144,000 to 19,000. The figure for June was shifted from 147,000 to 14,000. This was notably lower than job creation levels in recent years. During the pandemic, the economy lost jobs. The employment data points to challenges in the labor market as companies took a cautious approach in hiring and investment while grappling with Trump's sweeping -- and rapidl y changing -- tariffs this year.

Bolsonaro Placed Under House Arrest
Late Monday there's been more escalation in the Trump-Brazil standoff over the legal fate of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The country's top justices have ordered him to be put under house arrest. The Supreme Court, which is still in the process of ruling on the Bolsonaro case – as he's accused of an alleged coup attempt against his leftist rival President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – has now said he has defied a court order banning Bolsonaro from social media. They say he's attacking the nation's institutions while still on trial, and after he's already wearing a ankle monitoring has faced US sanctions (targeting among others Bolsonaro's main rival and man driving what Trump has called a 'witch hunt' – Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes) as well as the highest tariff rates in the world. Moraes himself issued the house arrest order, despite now being specifically targeted by the Trump administration. 'Moraes said Bolsonaro had violated precautionary measures imposed by the court restricting the former president's social media usage and political messaging,' according to Al Jazeera. Moraes has said that Bolsonaro, who was president of the country between 2019 and 2022, has spread messages with 'a clear content of encouragement and instigation to attacks against the Supreme Court and a blatant support for foreign intervention in the Brazilian Judiciary.' Trump's recent heightened intervention has added fuel to the fire, and the standoff has intensified, with the Lula government so far having refused to bend the knee. Bolsonaro's family members have also been very vocal, often acting as 'messenger' – for example hailing Trump's punitive actions targeting the Supreme Court and Lula officials. Netanyahu Reportedly Opted For Permanent Military Occupation
Israel's Channel 12 broadcaster is reporting that the Israeli government has made the decision to occupy the Gaza Strip on a permanent basis.
