Karnataka High Court directs State government to submit Commission report on Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede

The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday directed the State government to submit in sealed cover the report of the John Michael Cunha Commission of Inquiry on the incident of stampede that occurred outside M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on June 4. A Division Bench comprising Justice Jayant Banerji and Justice Umesh M. Adiga issued the direction on a petition filed by DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt. Ltd., which has challenged the legality of the procedure adopted by the Commission in conducting the inquiry. Request by government Meanwhile, Senior Advocate B.K. Sampath Kumar, appearing for DNA Networks, told the bench that the function to facilitate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team on the steps of Vidhana Soudha on June 4 was also arranged by DNA Networks on the request made by the State government. It may be noted that DNA is the event manager for the Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd., which owns RCB cricket team. The petitioner-company has questioned the legality of the Commission's report while alleging that the Commission had violated the principles of natural justice and contrary to the provisions of the Commissions of Inquiry (COI), 1952, as no opportunity to cross-examine the witnesses was given to DNA Networks. Reputation impacted Mr. Kumar also contended that the reputation of the company has been severely affected due to the continued publication of the Commission's report in all forms of media, as it appears that the media has all the details of the Commission's report, even though the petitioner-company was not given a copy despite multiple requests. Meanwhile, the State Advocate-General Shashi Kiran Shetty argued that DNA Network will have to approach the civil court against the media publications on the commission's report, while stating that the Government has nothing to do with publications in the media citing the Commission's report. DNA Network, in its petition, has claimed that the report of the Commission was leaked to the media but not given to the company, while pointing out that even the applications filed by it under the RTI Act have also been rejected.

UP: Man gets life imprisonment for murder within five months in Bulandshahr

Bulandshahr, Aug 5 (PTI) A court in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of a 23-year-old helmet vendor, delivering the verdict within just four months and 20 days of the crime. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge-3, Varun Mohit Nigam also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the accused, the lawyer said. According to Additional Public Prosecutor (Criminal) Vijay Kumar Sharma, the incident involved Akash and Rahul, both residents of Nagla Roomi village in the Khurja Nagar police station limits. The two worked together selling helmets in Delhi. A dispute between them led to animosity, with Rahul allegedly harbouring a grudge against Akash. On the evening of March 15, Rahul allegedly called Akash to meet him at Shahpur Morh and took him on a motorcycle ride towards Gothni village. Akash's cousin Amit witnessed the two leaving together. Later that night, in a forested area near Gothni, Rahul fatally struck Akash on the head with a sharp weapon, the lawyer said. The case was tried over the past four months and the court pronounced the sentence on Tuesday, convicting Rahul of murder and sentencing him to life imprisonment along with a Rs 25,000 fine, he added. Trial ends in ‘12 working days', man gets life for friend's murder

Meerut: A court in Bulandshahr on Tuesday convicted a 25-year-old man and sentenced him to life in jail for killing his friend on March 15 this year. The trial - under UP Police's 'Operation Conviction' initiative - began on July 16 and was completed in just 12 working days. Akash Kumar, 23, from Khurja, Bulandshahr, used to work with his friend Rahul Kumar, 25, and sold helmets in Delhi. It is alleged that Akash used to often mock Rahul's struggling financial situation. Things turned ugly in Holi when both returned home. Rahul had invited Akash for drinks in an empty farm in Gothni village. "An argument broke out between the two, and in a fit of rage, Rahul struck Akash's head and face with a sharp, heavy object before fleeing. His body was found the next morning," said ADGC Vijay Sharma. The ADGC added an FIR was registered under BNS section 103 (1) (murder) on March 16, and nine witnesses were produced in the court of ADJ-III Varun Mohit Nigam. Police arrested Rahul soon after the incident, and the weapon used in the murder was also found. "Considering the heinous nature of the crime, the court rejected the convicted man's plea for mercy, and sent him to prison for life, along with imposing a fine of Rs 25,000 on him," said Sharma. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo SSP Dinesh Kumar told TOI: "The judgment was part of 'Operation Conviction', an initiative by UP Police aimed at expediting convictions of crimes against women, children and heinous criminal elements. Detailed evidence was produced and the trial was expedited so that the accused could be convicted without delay." "Coordination between IOs, prosecution and judicial staff were key in the case. Bulandshahr has topped in UP in the ranking for June for the most number of convictions in a month. However, this is the first conviction under the new BNS Act in Bulandshahr district," Kumar added.
