
From Scandinavia to the world: NN.07 scales with precision and purpose
2024 was a big year for NN.07. The Danish brand celebrated record financial results, expansion in global markets and increased demand elsewhere. Now, half way into 2025, its team is continuing to grow with intention, taking a thought-out approach as to where they will take their next step.
'The primary thing is that we stay true to our long-term strategy; focus on product, select market expansion and strong partnerships,' Anders Rahr, NN.07's chief executive officer, told FashionUnited in an interview. 'We haven't tried to be everywhere at once. We spent years building this foundation, and in many ways, 2024 was a breakout year. It was a signal of how far we've come.'
Since its founding in 2007, NN.07 has prioritised what it calls a 'focused execution of an international strategy'. As such, the majority of its revenue, which welcomed high double-digit growth last year, now comes from markets outside of its home region of Scandinavia. 'We've shifted from a Nordic mindset to a global mindset, and I think that has actually been key from what products we offer to how we speak as a brand,' Rahr stated. 'That has certainly been a key milestone, as has been strengthening our partnerships with top tier retailers, like Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, Mr. Porter, Harrods and Amsterdam's De Bijenkorf.' Such efforts fell alongside the opening of stores in New York and London in 2024, which were described by Rahr as 'turning points that gave us visibility and credibility'. 'Retail is such a powerful amplifier when it's being done right,' he noted. 'We've learned that e-commerce and retail are now completely connected in the consumer's mind. This further underscores the importance of omnichannel experiences, connecting the brand's digital existence to its physical presence, something NN.07 is continuing to implement into its stores. For Rahr, this recent development reaffirms that retail is not 'old-fashioned' and instead an opportunity to create new connections to the brand, which can be hard to get from just a click.
In the US, this has been particularly important. Customers in the region look for a very high level of proactive communication, with a clientele-focus becoming increasingly important, Rahr noted. Despite being an operationally different market, however, NN.07 has remained consistent in showing up akin to its approach in other markets. This can be seen in the maintaining of control over key elements of design, like fabric, fit and finishes through a centralised development process and trusted network of suppliers, Rahr stated.
This has become more and more important in a business environment tainted by concerns over tariffs, which has rocked the fashion industry since the appointment of President Donald Trump earlier this year. When asked if he sees this impacting NN.07, Rahr reaffirmed the brand's stable outlook: 'When working with commerce or ongoing trade wars, you always have to stay vigilant. I believe that with our business model, we will find solutions long-term, no matter the outcome. We're on a mission to build a global brand, so trading across borders is part of what we do.' Rahr noted that NN.07's business model is scalable, yet retains the ability to ensure a 'sustainable' and measured growth. Looking ahead, with new stores and new markets on the horizon, the company is expecting continued growth in both its top and bottom line in 2025, while remaining aware of evolving tariff disputes. Expansion, however, focuses largely on cities deemed to be 'cultural hotspots', instead of countries as a whole, as building relevance locally is considered by Rahr an imperative part of moving into new markets.
'Our go-to-market strategy is focused on cities instead of countries,' Rahr stated. 'We enter one city at a time, and then we have the right local strategy in regards to connections with retailers, partners and store formats. The regions that we're already in hold plenty of future potential — mainly Europe and the US. Then, of course, further down the line, Asia becomes a natural component for a global brand.'
NN.07 can therefore be anticipated in more 'cultural capitals' in the near future, though which cities currently remain under wraps. 'We're not just chasing growth for its own sake, we're building a brand with meaning. We have momentum, but we're using that momentum to go deeper, not just wider,' Rahr concluded. Long-awaited retail park cafe has arrived but was it worth the wait
It's been quite a wait for coffee fans. Signs have been suggesting Black Sheep Coffee were opening a cafe at Broughton shopping centre for some two years. But on Thursday the chain - with branches around the UK - finally flung open their doors. Judging by the response so far it's clear that it's set to be a success. Franchise owners - and husband and wife team - Haris Mirza and Saba Jamshed will run the cafe - in addition to one they operate in Preston. Hari, 41, told me their Preston one took a year to be as popular as this Flintshire one is now so the future looks positive. Haris said what makes Black Sheep Coffee is different is its Robusta coffee naturally contains twice as much caffeine as normal Arabica coffee beans but in a good way. It's less acidic and it's more chocolatey and nutty so it's got the right notes. "It's what drove me to open this cafe," he says. "I was literally just a customer like anyone else. I would just go and buy a regular mocha and then I just ended up taking on the franchise. "The Robusta coffee beans come from India and the equivalent of the Arabica beans - which is the Blue Volcano which is fruitier - come from Colombia. There are other coffees as well. "There are so many options to customise - different syrups like hazelnut. caramel....., and whipped cream." Haris says it's a friendly place where staff including him and his wife chat to customers. Customers order at the front, pay at the next counter and collect at the far end. The orders are made on one of three touch screens, much like in McDonald's or M&S cafes. There are lots of bagels, sandwiches and croissants and the like. The meal deals looked good. I went for a Chicken & chorizo farmhouse sandwich, flapjack (in a plastic wrapping) and cappuccino. The drink is from their "Blue Volcano" range and I went for added caramel. It's quite strong and rich and exactly what it's difficult to make at home. There were many Matcha drinks too. Matcha means finely-ground powder of green tea which can be added to milk, water or another drink. While here I had one with lemonade. It tastes rather like Lilt or 7UP, from back in the day, without the fizziness. And while it looks somewhat unappetising it tastes sweetish and light, and with some ice, it was a refreshing pick me up on a warm and muggy day. The Chicken & chorizo sandwich was on fresh bread and with a cottage cheese filling. That made it lovely and moist and it was delicious. I would have preferred the flapjack not to be in wrapping and to be a bigger square on a plate from the counter. But it was soft and fruity and a lovely snack. The decor was unpretentious, like the Black Sheep Coffee cafe I'd been to in Cardiff. This one has exposed, ventilation ducts, faux distressed plank flooring, breeze blocks and corrugated metal on one wall. They give it an industrial look. The grey artwork personalises this branch. Striking images of two racehorses presumably hurtling around the Roodee circuit (Chester Racecourse) and Roman Chester city walls are a nice choice. It's the first Black Sheep Coffee branch in North Wales - between Clogau and Lush at Broughton retail park. And with a relatively captive audience it should do well. Wall Street rocked by heavyweight slugfest as investment titan lays down massive bet against $100bn company
Two billionaire Wall Street titans have gone to war over the rise of Bitcoin in the financial markets. The ongoing clash between cryptocurrency investor Michael Saylor and renowned financial skeptic James Chanos has sent shockwaves through the stock market. Saylor, the executive chairman of MicroStrategy, has built what he refers to as a 'treasury' of the cryptocurrency by amassing a huge stockpile of more than 500,000 Bitcoins over the past five years, reports the Washington Post. The investor has made billions out of the move as his company bought the currency through issuing stock and bonds, and he has seen his fortune skyrocket since President Trump was elected. Trump was once a crypto skeptic, but he has since become a keen supporter of the financial tool, even launching his own cryptocurrency, $TRUMP coin, in January. In May, Trump Media & Technology Group echoed Saylor's tactics by announcing it would raise $2.5 billion to build its own 'Bitcoin treasury.' Stocks in Saylor's company have risen an astronomic 1,500 percent since 2020, and his 'treasury' of Bitcoin is currently valued at almost double that of Bitcoin itself. The massive surge in price could have an impact on wallets across the country, as MicroStrategy is expected to join the S&P 500 - and many 401ks - at some point this year. But Chanos, a legendary Wall Street player known for betting against other companies, has gambled against Saylor's investments in a feud that could crater the stock market. Chanos announced at the Sohn Investment Conference in May that he was 'selling MicroStrategy stock and buying Bitcoin,' alleging in a subsequent CNBC interview that Saylor's 'treasury' is 'ridiculously' overvalued so he was shorting his firm. Chanos described his play of buying Bitcoin and shorting Saylor's company as the equivalent of buying something for $1 and selling it for $2.50. Jim Osman, founder of financial analysis firm Edge, told the Washington Post that the battle between the two titans has gripped traders on Wall Street, and is seen by many as a litmus test for the strength of the cryptocurrency industry at large. 'It's a poker game with very high stakes,' he said. 'One man has put everything on Bitcoin, predicting that it's the future of money. And the other man is saying it's all smoke and mirrors and that he is blinding you with science.' Osman said the clash comes down to one fundamental question: 'Do you want to bet on a dream, or do you want to bet against it?' Saylor's stockpile of over 500,000 Bitcoin is valued at around $59 billion. Chanos has long been a skeptic of cryptocurrency, and in 2018 he described it as a 'libertarian fantasy' to Cointelegraph. He has doubted the stability of Bitcoin because it is not backed by any major currency, and has labelled it 'the dark side of finance' due to its links to illegal activities. When Chanos laid down his gamble against Saylor in May, he said MicroStrategy's approach to cryptocurrency could lead other, less stable firms to follow suit, and ultimately lose money if he is correct. He said his trade is 'a good barometer of not only just the arbitrage itself, but I think of retail speculation', per Cointelegraph. Earlier this month, the feud between the two billionaires escalated as Saylor criticized Chanos on Bloomberg TV, warning that 'if our stock rallies up, he's going to get liquidated and wiped out.' The next day, Bloomberg showed Saylor's warning to Chanos, to which he responded: 'I always love it when management says: 'He just doesn't understand our business.' 'Michael Saylor is a wonderful salesman, but that's what he is: He's a salesman. … I call it financial gibberish.'
