Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projections after 1 week of training camp
The Arizona Cardinals began training camp this week and the battle for the 53-man roster has commenced. There have been highlights and injuries. Cornerback Star Thomas is out for the season with an ACL tear. Rookie defensive lineman Walter Nolen has a calf injury that could keep him out of all of camp. Veteran defensive lineman Bilal Nichols still hasn't recovered from the neck injury he suffered in Week 6.
With a couple of practices in the books, this is our first attempt to predict the 53-man roster, based on what we know.
Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projection after first week of training camp
This is easy. Murray and Brissett are locks. Clayton Tune's best chance is for the practice squad. The Cardinals have not had more than two quarterbacks on the active roster since Jonathan Gannon became head coach.
This room feels set as well. While many would like to see Michael Carter push for a spot, he isn't going to beat out Benson for the primary back to Conner, he isn't going to beat out Demercado for the third-down role with special teams and isn't going to beat out Dallas for the kick return/special teams ace role.
Fehoko is an intriguing option with length and speed, but he doesn't offer much on special teams. $1 million of his salary is guaranteed. One of these guys will be inactive on game days.
Josiah Deguara is an intriguing option because of his special teams play, but he would have to be the No. 3 tight end on the roster to be worth keeping because the Cardinals never have four tight ends active in a game, and what is the point of a special teams ace that isn't active?
The numbers will be tough here. The top six are locks. Beachum is the backup swing tackle. Gaines will be the backup center and then Leverett can play all over the line. Conner is developmental. Could they keep 10? That could include second-year tackle Christian Jones, rookie tackle Josh Fryar or veteran Royce Newman.
Nolen doesn't make the roster because I predict he will start the season on PUP and will be out at least four weeks. If he is going to miss all of camp, he probably will not have enough reps to be ready for the season. His roster spot will be a future problem, when it would make more sense to cut Collier, who has $750,000 in guaranteed salary. That will have been paid out in the first seven weeks.
Also, I am also predicting that Nichols' neck injury will keep him from playing. That makes six players for six spots easy.
Xavier Thomas gets bumped from the roster. Ojulari is on PUP still recovering from his torn ACL, so that will be something to watch.
Four of these five slots feel like easy choices. Do they keep four or five? Walker gives them special teams play.
Thomas' injury makes the starting lineup easy, but the two backup spots will be between Clark, Burke (a rookie) and 2024 third-round pick Elijah Jones. Jones gets bumped.
Blount beats out rookie Kitan Crawford.
These are set.

Cameron Brink returns but Aces end Sparks' winning streak
Thirteen months after tearing her ACL, Sparks forward Cameron Brink made her season debut, stepping onto the court at the 2:39 mark in the first quarter. Brink looked comfortable despite the long layoff, jumping into the midseason contest intensity with confidence. She was active and competitive throughout, playing 13 minutes and 55 seconds during her return. 'We're thrilled to have her back, and I'm incredibly proud of her,' Sparks coach Lynn Roberts said. 'She's on a minutes restriction. … I told her that she needs to enjoy the moment. … It's a hard injury to come back from mentally and physically, and she's done it with a smile on her face.' But the night marked the end of the WNBA's longest active winning streak, as the Sparks fell 89-74 to the Las Vegas Aces Tuesday night at Arena. The Sparks (11‑15) trailed by double digits for most of the game and couldn't recover against the surging Aces (14‑13), who extended their lead to as much as 21 points. In the third season matchup between the two teams, the Sparks came out a bit hesitant, while the Aces were the aggressors from the tip. 'That was the worst shooting we've had all season,' Roberts said. 'We've got to be able to defend. It's knowing personnel, it's knowing tendency, it's staying locked into the game plan even when they score the first eight points.' The Aces leaned on strong starts from Jackie Young and A'ja Wilson, who combined for 34 points in the first half alone. Wilson finished with 34 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, while Young recorded a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Dearica Hamby remained a bright spot for the Sparks, contributing 15 points and six rebounds. Hamby was named WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week after leading the Sparks to three wins, including a road victory over the defending champion New York Liberty on Saturday. Kelsey Plum added 22 points, five rebounds, and eight assists in the loss. Brink added five points, four rebounds, one block and one steal in 14 minutes of play. 'I was really proud of her,' Plum said of Brink. 'I told her after the game, 'It's very impressive to come in, make the impact that you did.' ... I think she's gonna continue to just help us a ton.' The Sparks, who had been rolling offensively, were startled by their difficulty scoring. 'We have been so used to making shots and so I think it caught us off guard a little bit,' Roberts said. The Sparks will look to regroup before playing the Storm in Seattle Friday night.

Sports Fans Celebrating Cameron Brink's Highly-Anticipated WNBA Return
Sports Fans Celebrating Cameron Brink's Highly-Anticipated WNBA Return originally appeared on The Spun. It's been a long road back for WNBA star Cameron Brink but she's finally been given the green light to return to the floor following last year's season-ending ACL and meniscus tear. 13 months after her promising rookie year ended prematurely, the 6-foot-4 LA Sparks forward has officially been listed as active by the team. Clearing the decks for Brink to make her 2025 debut in tonight's game vs. Las Vegas. The former No. 2 pick was averaging 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.3 blocks per game before suffering the injury on June 18. And in the 15 contests she was able to play in she had already proved to be a strong defensive force in the middle of the paint. "Cameron Brink returns tonight 👏" the WNBA posted. Fans were happy to have her back on X. "Let's go Cam!!! 💪🏻💪🏻" Lindsey Vonn replied. "Can't wait to watch 🙌🏼" a user exclaimed. "I'm ready to watch her dominate," a fan said. "Sparks have a full, complete, and healthy roster! That's all that matters! Please don't put too much pressure on Cam~ just happy she's well enough to hit the court!" another person commented. "We will be watching," another user stated. "welcome back Cam!!!" "My favorite player is back!" another fan shared. "Let's go!" Brink will more than likely be on a minutes restriction for the foreseeable future but says she can't wait to be back out there with her ladies. "It means the world," Brink told sports reporter John W. Davis yesterday. "I'm just very excited, very humbled by this experience. It's no easy thing to come back from. Just really excited." The Sparks are currently 11-14 and just 1.5 games out of the fourth seed in the West. Adding Brink to the mix should only help LA's chances; but it's understandably going to take some time for her to get back to the play we've become accustomed to since her days at Fans Celebrating Cameron Brink's Highly-Anticipated WNBA Return first appeared on The Spun on Jul 30, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 30, 2025, where it first appeared.
