Complaints to NI health trusts grow by 75% over five-year period, report reveals

The number of grievances submitted to Health and Social Care Trusts jumped from 5,005 in 2020/21 to 8,805 in 2024/25.
The details are outlined alongside statistics published today by the Department of Health which reveal that all six trusts have experienced a rise in the number of complaints.
It also includes information on complaints against Family Practitioner Services in NI for the year ending March 31, 2025, broken down by the programme of care (POC), category, subject and specialty of the issue raised.
Over a quarter (2,406) of complaints involved the Belfast Trust, with 2,178 complaints made to the South Eastern Trust and another 1,634 to the Western Trust.
A total of 1,180 issues were reported to the Southern Trust, while the Northern Trust received 1,092 complaints.
The NI Air Ambulance received 315 complaints, while 745 grievances related to general medicine and another 550 pertained to children and young people services.
The highest percentage of complaint issues (14.1%) received in 2024/25 related to the 'accident and emergency' specialty (1,243).
Over half (4,718) of all complaints received during 2024/25 fell under the bracket of 'acute POC' issues, accounting for one in seven of all grievances against the Belfast Trust.
The number of complaints about acute care has rose from 2,695 in 2020/21 to 4,718 last year.
Complaint issues relating to Family Practitioner Services increased from 173 in 2020/21 to 272 in 2024/25.
The median age of the patient or client raising complaints was 46 years.
The statistics reveal that 59% of complainants were female and 41% were male.
Health trusts issued substantive responses to more than two-fifths (2,455) of complaints within 20 working days.
On a more positive note, the health trusts received 42,312 compliments in the same 12-month period.
Just over 49% of them related to 'quality of treatment and care', with just over 25% pertaining to 'staff attitude and behaviour'.
Almost 11% were from people impressed by the 'information and communication' within the health service. Nearly 3% related to the 'environment' and almost 12% fell under the bracket of 'other' subjects.
It comes a month after the Belfast Trust appointed Jennifer Welsh as its new chief executive following the sacking of its chairman, Ciaran Mulgrew, by the Health Minister.
Mike Nesbitt decided that a change of leadership was needed in order to mark a fresh start for the trust following a series of scandals.
Health was marked as a priority in Stormont's Programme for Government due to NI having 'the longest hospital waiting times in the UK, with people struggling to get the treatment they need'.
'In recent years, pressure has increased due to both a rise in demand but also the impact of the pandemic on the Health and Social Care system,' it states.
'These have combined, adding to the backlog of patients awaiting care.'

The Canary Islands have issued an alert saying eight people have been struck down by food poisoning in the popular Spanish holiday destination A beloved holiday hotspot for British travellers has been struck by a severe health scare, prompting authorities to issue an urgent warning. ‌ The Canary Islands have raised the alarm after eight individuals were affected by the outbreak. ‌ Officials from the Canary Islands Government's Department of Health have released a statement confirming that both the La Palma Health Area Directorate and the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) Directorate-General for Public Health are "investigating a case of food poisoning on the island that has so far affected eight people". ‌ The food-related illness, triggered by eating fish bought from unofficial suppliers outside regular distribution networks, has impacted eight individuals, with one person requiring hospital treatment at the University Hospital of La Palma. Public health chiefs have launched their emergency procedures, begun the necessary epidemiological investigation, and are maintaining surveillance for any additional cases that might emerge, reports the Liverpool Echo. Both the La Palma Health Area Directorate and the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) Directorate General of Public Health, operating under the Department of Health, are conducting the inquiry. ‌ The initial cases of this food-borne disease were identified on Tuesday July 22, just two hours following consumption of the tainted product. Those affected received medical attention at the Emergency Service of the Los Llanos de Aridane Health Centre, where staff immediately implemented food poisoning protocols upon suspicion of contamination. Tests conducted identified histamine contamination as the likely cause of the poisoning. ‌ Common symptoms of this type of poisoning include a burning or itching sensation in the tongue and throat, a peppery taste in the mouth, facial and neck redness and swelling, hot flushes, hives on the palms, face, head and ears, headaches and dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Officials have urged holidaymakers to verify the source of fish before consuming it. The Canary Islands are a part of Spain. ‌ In 2023, Spain reported 35 outbreaks of histamine poisoning affecting 275 individuals, with one major incident involving 154 patients. Typically, symptoms appear within an hour of consumption. Histamine production is often linked to improper food handling, particularly incorrect storage temperatures. Once formed, histamine cannot be eradicated by standard cooking or freezing temperatures.

East Kilbride MSP praises Scottish Government for delivering more NHS appointments

East Kilbride's MSP has praised the Scottish Government for delivering more NHS appointments. ‌ In May, the First Minister committed in his Programme for Government to delivering 150,000 additional NHS appointments and procedures. ‌ Now, more than 210,000 appointments will be delivered in total, backed by £110 million of Scottish Government funding. ‌ This extra boost to the NHS will see the Scottish Government reduce waiting times and backlogs for key services, including for cancer, dermatology and diagnostic services like imaging. This announcement will mean it is easier for people across Scotland to see a doctor and receive the treatment they need more quickly. ‌ Collette Stevenson MSP said: 'Scotland's NHS is a valued public resource that people across East Kilbride rely on. 'Despite challenges in recent years, from the impact of Covid to recruitment challenges because of Brexit, the SNP government is investing record sums in getting Scotland's NHS back on track. 'First Minister John Swinney promised to deliver 150,000 extra appointments in Scotland's NHS. ‌ 'The SNP Government is not just delivering on its promise - but will exceed it, delivering more than 210,000 appointments and procedures across Scotland this year. This will make a huge difference for people receiving treatment from NHS Lanarkshire. 'I want to pay tribute to NHS staff in East Kilbride, whose hard work and commitment to the service of their communities makes this vital progress possible.' An extra £4 million of funding has been allocated towards dermatology - taking the overall total that ministers are providing as part of efforts to cut waiting lists to £110 million. ‌ The cash should allow 4,100 more dermatology outpatient appointments to be carried out this year than there were last year. The announcement comes as First Minister John Swinney and his Health Secretary Neil Gray continued to focus on cutting the longest waits for treatment. The Scottish Government hopes these efforts will mean 213,000 more NHS appointments are carried out this year than there were in 2024-25. ‌ The health service is expected to deliver 195,000 scans in 2025-26, along with 88,000 new outpatient appointments and 31,000 inpatient or day case procedures. The increases come as the Government continues its efforts to tackle waiting times for treatment after backlogs increased during the Covid pandemic. Mr Gray declared: 'Reducing long waits in the NHS is one of the biggest priorities for the First Minister and the Scottish Government. ‌ 'Our record investment in the NHS this year is allowing us to target specific areas that are experiencing long waits, reducing backlogs and getting people the appointments and treatments they need as quickly as possible.' The Health Secretary continued: 'I am pleased to confirm that we expect the additional funding committed to reduce waiting times to result in more than 300,000 appointments and procedures this year. 'My thanks go out to all the hard-working NHS teams for their continued efforts. ‌ 'I am announcing an additional £4 million specifically for dermatology.
