Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced that it would reduce its global workforce by approximately two per cent, a move that will affect over 12,000 employees, primarily at the middle and senior levels, over the next year. Tata Consultancy Services, one of India's biggest IT companies, has decided to axe 2 per cent of its global workforce, impacting about 12,000 jobs in the financial year 2025-26, the company announced on Sunday.
This marks one of the biggest workforce shakeups in the company's history. Those affected include a large number of mid-to-senior-level professionals, although some junior-level staff have also been impacted, especially those who have been on the bench for an extended period.

TCS chief executive officer and managing director K Krithivasan called the decision a hard but necessary reckoning.
The development has left many wondering, why is the IT behemoth known for its stability among most Indians, suddenly letting go of thousands? Is this just about performance, or is the rise of artificial intelligence playing a role? Here's what we know.
Why is TCS firing 12,000 employees?
According to Reuters, TCS, the most profitable company in the Tata Group, is going through a major restructuring phase as it expands into new markets, adopts fresh technologies, and leans into AI integration.
As part of this shift, around 12,200 employees will lose their jobs, even as the company insists it's doing everything possible to minimise disruption.
'This transition is being planned with due care to ensure there is no impact on service delivery to our clients,' the company said, reports Reuters.
The layoffs won't be geography or domain-specific and will be concluded over the next three quarters of FY26.
Earlier this month, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Milind Lakkad stated in a company call that the workforce stood at 6,13,069 by the end of the first quarter.
'Net attrition during the quarter was over 5,000 employees. We have honoured all the job offers, and we'll do so for the rest of the year. Lateral hiring will be recalibrated based on the demand outlook,' he was quoted as saying in The Indian Express report.

Lakkad also mentioned that TCS plans to keep investing in its business to stay in sync with the fast-evolving needs of its clients.
Is AI the reason behind TCS's job cuts?
In an exclusive conversation with Moneycontrol, TCS CEO K Krithivasan explained that the job cuts are not driven by artificial intelligence efficiency gains but are actually a part of a larger vision that aims to make the company 'more agile and future-ready'.
'It is not because that we need less people. We will continue to look for high (quality) talent, acquiring talent, training talent. That continues to happen. This is more about where there is a feasibility of deployment,' he said.

TCS has already trained over 550,000 employees in basic AI skills and around 100,000 in advanced AI, hoping to prepare its workforce for the next tech wave.
However, not all employees, especially those in senior positions, have been able to transition smoothly into new-age roles. The challenges are particularly stark for those accustomed to older project models.

'When we did programs in the old waterfall method, we had multiple leadership teams. That's changing,' Krithivasan noted.
Despite this, experts suggest that AI and automation are silently reshaping the job market in IT. Roles like manual testing are increasingly being replaced by AI, and those who struggle to keep up with the pace of technological change are the ones most at risk.
And this trend isn't unique to TCS. For the past couple of years, major tech companies have been slashing roles and leaning into automation. Earlier, Silicon Valley giant Microsoft said that roughly 30 per cent of the code is now AI-generated.
What will TCS offer the affected employees?
TCS has said the layoffs won't happen abruptly. Instead, the company plans to carry them out in a phased and considerate manner, ensuring those impacted are given a chance at redeployment within the company before any final decisions are made.
'It will be coming through the year. We won't do it in a hurry. We will first talk to the people that could be impacted. We will provide them an opportunity. When we are not able to provide the opportunity, then we will do what we need to do,' Krithivasan told Moneycontrol.

For those who do end up leaving, TCS has promised to support them through a structured exit process. The company said it will follow its standard HR policies, which include notice-period pay, extended insurance coverage, severance benefits, outplacement support, and access to counselling services. 'We will do it in a very, very compassionate way,' Krithivasan added.
While the company hasn't shared specific dates, the entire process is expected to roll out over the course of FY26.

New labour laws in Saudi Arabia are big news for migrant workers as..., especially good for Indians due to...

New Delhi: The Saudi Arabian government has come up with new labour laws for workers. In this, workers have been given two months to resign, change jobs or leave the country. It has been reported on Saudi Arabia's Qiva platform that a grace period of 60 days has been made mandatory before declaring an employee 'absent from work' after the contract ends. This change in rules will directly affect foreign workers. Indians will be especially affected in this because a large part of the foreigners working in Saudi Arabia are Indian workers. In such a situation, it is important for Indians to know these rules. What do the new rules say? The Qiva platform of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development of Saudi Arabia now gives 60 days' grace before declaring an employee absent from work. This means that employers can no longer mark employees absent from work immediately after the contract expires. They will have to wait at least 60 days, provided the employee's residence permit remains valid. During this period, disconnected employees can re-contract with their current employer, move to a new employer or leave Saudi Arabia. Failure to take action within 60 days will automatically remove their name from the employer's records. From which date have the new rules been implemented? The Qiva labour platform has made these significant changes to employment-contract rules from July 31, 2025, the Saudi Gazette reported. It said the new rule gives employees time to legalise their status and employers time for due process. This helps stabilise changes in the labour market and reduces the risk of a sudden loss of legal residency. An employer can report an employee as absent only if the employee has no active contract and the iqama is valid for at least 60 days. During this time, a disconnected employee will have the option to re-contract with the same employer, move to another job through Qiva, or leave Saudi Arabia within a 60-day window. If no action is taken within this period, i.e. 60 days, the employee will be considered absent and removed from the employer's records. Information about this will be given to the Ministry of Human Resources and Home Affairs. Even after this, employees can access salary and service certificates to verify their previous or current roles.

Grok Imagine goes live on Elon Musk's X platform

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has officially rolled out Grok Imagine, a text-to-video generation tool integrated within the X platform (formerly Twitter). The feature, which was previously being tested with a limited group of users, is now more widely accessible. According to Musk, users can update their X app and request access to the waitlist by navigating to the 'Grok' section in settings and selecting 'Imagine.' 'Grok Imagine is still in early beta, so will improve almost every day,' Musk wrote in a post on X, adding that real-time improvements are expected as the model scales. Grok Imagine allows users to generate videos and still images from text prompts, with videos of up to six minutes in duration. In addition, it can animate static images into moving visuals with synchronized sound, offering creators a more seamless workflow without needing external tools or software. Early users have compared the feature to Twitter's Vine, the once-popular short-form video app that was discontinued in 2017. However, Grok Imagine appears to be aimed at much broader use cases—including entertainment, education, and meme culture—leveraging generative AI for creative expression. The feature is available both via the standalone Grok app and within the main X platform. According to a post by the official Grok handle, full public rollout is expected in phases beginning October 2025. The launch follows xAI's recent disclosure that it is also working on a kid-friendly version of its Grok chatbot, suggesting the company is eyeing wider demographic adoption as it refines its AI capabilities. Meanwhile, xAI is in the process of preparing a fresh funding round, which could value the company between $170 billion and $200 billion, according to a July 12 Reuters report. The company expects to generate over $13 billion in annual earnings by 2029, as per financial projections shared by Morgan Stanley and reported by Bloomberg in June. With Grok Imagine now live, Musk appears to be positioning X as not just a social media platform but an AI-powered content engine, blending user-generated media with proprietary infrastructure and models built by xAI.

Indian Gamers Are No Longer Just Students: Study Finds Surge in Women and Working Professionals

Bengaluru: A new nationwide study released by Indian electronics brand Kreo has revealed a major shift in the country's gaming landscape, with more than 35% of gamers now comprising working professionals, including engineers, entrepreneurs, creators, and marketers. Women above 35 are emerging as one of the fastest-growing gamer demographics, the study notes. Titled 'How India Games', the report draws on responses from over 5,900 gamers across the country, providing one of the most detailed portraits of the Indian gaming community to date. It comes amid rapid growth in the sector — a recent WinZO–IEIC report projected India's gaming market to more than double to $9.1 billion by 2029. Among the key insights: India's gaming population is growing at an annual rate of 16%. While 94% of gamers are still men, women above the age of 35 are entering the space in large numbers. 73% of female gamers admitted to concealing their gender online, citing experiences of harassment — yet many are leading and building new communities. Mobile phones remain the dominant gaming device for 88% of players, even among multi-platform users. Over half of all gamers express an active interest in creating content or joining the esports industry, suggesting growing ambitions around gaming careers. Interestingly, while most Indian parents still consider gaming a 'waste of time,' around 10% have begun playing alongside their children, suggesting a generational softening of attitudes. 'Gaming was an escape for me growing up,' said Ishan Sukul, Co-founder and CEO of Kreo. 'Today, it's how millions of Indians connect and express themselves. Through this report, we wanted to understand gaming not just as a hobby, but as a response to deeper cultural shifts — including loneliness and mental health.' (eom)
