Health Canada has issued a recall notice for more than 260,000 above-ground swimming pools sold in Canada since the early 2000s after nine kids drowned in the United States.

Another five million pools are under a recall advisory in the U.S.

The notices cover a range of Bestway, Intex Recreation and Polygroup pools sold by major retailers as far back as 2002.

Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission say the pools have compression straps running along the outside of the product that 'may create a foothold' for small children and allow them to access the water unattended.

That can pose a serious drowning risk, the regulators warn, and they're asking consumers to contact the companies for a repair.

To date, the CPSC believes nine children across the U.S. have drowned after gaining access to these now-recalled pools in this way.

Those deaths occurred between 2007 and 2022, involving children between the ages of 22 months and three years old.

Health Canada said in its recall that the pool companies have not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
Consumers in possession of these pools are urged to immediately contact Bestway, Intex and/or Polygroup to receive the free repair kit — which will consist of a rope to replace the compression strap.

Owners of these pools should otherwise ensure that small children cannot access the pool without supervision, regulators note — and could alternatively drain the pool until the repair is made.
Article content
All of the pools being recalled are 48 inches or taller — and can be identified by brand and model names listed on both the CPSC and Health Canada's recall notices.

Sales of the pools ranged by model and location, but date as far back to 2002 and as recently as 2025.

Two of the four Atlantic provinces have measles outbreaks

A dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination awaits the next patient during a vaccine clinic at Southwestern Public Health in St. Thomas, Ont., on March 4. THE CANADIAN PRESS/ Geoff Robins FREDERICTON — Two of the four Atlantic provinces are dealing with active measles outbreaks. Nova Scotia health officials say there are 30 cases in the province's northern zone, while New Brunswick's online dashboard says there are 15 confirmed infections in the south-central region. Earlier this year, Prince Edward Island reported four cases — two in April and two in June. Newfoundland and Labrador has not reported measles infections in 2025. On Thursday, Nova Scotia health officials said the northern zone outbreak involves communities with low measles vaccination rates, but didn't give details. Scientists say a 95 per cent vaccination rate — with two doses of vaccine — is needed in a population to prevent the disease from spreading. Dogs, crews and helicopters being deployed to find missing B.C. hiker in Banff park

Chad Singer, of Radium, went missing in Marvel Pass on July 23, 2025 The search continues for a B.C. paramedic who has been missing since Wednesday while on a hike and was last seen in Banff National Park. Chad Singer, 42, of Radium, B.C., started his hike near the Aurora Creek trail, east of Radium Hot Springs. RCMP say he was last seen that afternoon in Marvel Pass in the national park. Police say the trail system can connect to trails near Marvel Lake and the trail network between Sunshine Mountain, Banff and Mount Shark in Kananaskis. RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Gina Slaney says the Parks Canada Banff Field Unit is managing the search, which includes ground search teams, a helicopter visual thermal search and the Parks Canada canine team. She says the RCMP is also sending in its own dogs to help find Singer. 'At approximately 2 p.m. on the 23rd he separated from his friend as he wished to continue a climb that his friend didn't want to attempt,' Slaney said. 'He did not return to the trailhead and was reported as missing.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 25, 2025. Bill Graveland, The Canadian Press
