The quadrivalent recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV4) demonstrated non-inferior immune responses in children and adolescents aged 9-17 years compared with adults aged 18-49 years, with the safety profile comparable between both age groups, providing a suitable alternative to egg-based formulations for children.
METHODOLOGY:
Researchers conducted a phase 3, non-randomised, immunobridging study during the 2022-2023 northern hemisphere influenza season to evaluate whether immune responses to RIV4 in children (aged 9-17 years) were non-inferior to those in adults (aged 18-49 years).
They enrolled 648 children and adolescents (mean age, 13 years; 52% boys) and 660 adults (mean age, 34.3 years; 40% men).
All participants received a single intramuscular dose of RIV4 (45 μg haemagglutinin of each of A/H1N1, A/H3N2, B/Victoria, and B/Yamagata strains) and were monitored for 6 months on days 9, 29, and 181.
The endpoint was measured using haemagglutination inhibition (HAI) titre ratios and the difference in seroconversion rates at day 29 post-vaccination.
Non-inferiority was established if the lower limit of the 95% CI exceeded 0.667 for geometric mean titre ratios and −10% or above for seroconversion, for each of the four strains.
TAKEAWAY:
At day 29, the ratio of geometric mean HAI titres between children and adolescents and adult groups was well above the prespecified non-inferiority margin for A/H1N1 (2.0; 95% CI, 1.7-2.3), H3N2 (3.3; 95% CI, 2.8-3.9), B/Victoria (1.6; 95% CI, 1.4-1.8), and B/Yamagata (1.2; 95% CI, 1.1-1.4) strains.
Similarly, the difference in seroconversion rates between the two groups was also above the prespecified non-inferiority margin for all the four strains.
The safety profile of RIV4 was comparable between the two groups; however, solicited reactions within 7 days post-vaccination were less common in children and adolescents than in adults.
None of the serious and medically attended adverse events were related to the vaccine, and no deaths or adverse events of special interest were reported in either group.
IN PRACTICE:
"Having multiple influenza vaccine options is crucial to successfully combating influenza, and these options need to be available for children. Prioritising children in influenza vaccine studies is an important step in combating the global burden of influenza," the authors of a commentary wrote.

LIMITATIONS:
This study did not investigate immune responses in children younger than 9 years. The evaluation was limited to just one influenza season, and no clinical testing for influenza disease or infection was conducted, potentially accounting for some of the increased antibody responses observed.

Over two years, Rebecca Atkins filed more than 250 job applications, and felt like every one was going into a gaping chasm -- one opened by the highest unemployment rate for recent college graduates in the United States in more than a decade. "It was extremely dispiriting," said the 25-year-old, who graduated in 2022 with a degree in law and justice from a university in the US capital Washington. "I was convinced that I was a terrible person, and terrible at working." At 5.8 percent, unemployment for young, recent graduates from US universities is higher than it has been since November 2013, excluding 15 months in the Covid pandemic, according to official data. Moreover, it has also remained stubbornly higher than overall unemployment -- an extremely unusual situation, analysts say. And while overall US unemployment has stabilized between around 3.5 and 4 percent post-pandemic, unemployment for recent college graduates is only trending higher. The labor market for new grads has weakened consistently since 2022, with new hiring down 16 percent in 2025, year-over-year, according to payroll firm Gusto. Analysts say the trend is likely a result of cyclical post-pandemic hiring slowdowns -- particularly in new-grad-heavy sectors like technology, finance, and business information -- and overall economic uncertainty in the tumultuous early days of the Trump administration. That is scant consolation to the droves of young people -- often saddled with huge amounts of student debt -- on the hunt for their first full-time job. "All of the jobs that I wanted, I didn't have the requirements for -- often entry-level jobs would require you to have four or five years of experience," said Atkins, who bounced between part-time roles and working in restaurants for years. - 'Extremely high uncertainty' - "It is definitely an outlier," said Matthew Martin, senior US economist at Oxford Economics. "You'd expect that the white collar positions would not be as exposed to cyclical downturns (as other jobs)." Job openings for professional and business services have declined by more than 40 percent since 2021, according to research authored by Martin, with tech sector jobs disproportionately impacted. "Part of that is a slower pace of hiring as they right-size after they hired at very high rates in 2022, but at the same time the sheer volume of decline also points to the impact of AI," he told AFP, signaling the potential of artificial intelligence technology to eliminate some entry-level roles. Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, said slowing tech sector hiring as companies focus on holding on to their talent "disproportionately" affects recent graduates. The hiring slowdown is also a result of US President Donald Trump's far-reaching policy swings since taking office in January, said Daco. "The experience of extremely high uncertainty when it comes to the administration's trade, tax or other policies has caused many firms to potentially slow down or freeze their hiring." He cautioned, however, against jumping to the conclusion that AI had already begun to eliminate entry-level roles, pointing to a so-far limited uptake of the technology by most sectors. "The reality is that a lot of firms are still in the early stages of adoption of these new technologies, and I think it would be a bit premature to assume that we've reached a level of use... that would have a visible macro impact." - 'Constantly working' - The United States is perhaps the most expensive country in the world for a university education, with an average cost of $27,673 per year for an undergraduate degree, according to official data. In 2020, 36.3 percent of US undergraduates took on federal student loans to help meet those spiraling costs, the data shows, with the Education Data Initiative putting average student loan debt for graduating students at $29,550. Even without student loan debt, however, the weakening job market can leave some recent graduates feeling like they are stretched thin. Katie Bremer, 25, graduated from American University with a dual-degree in Environmental Science and Public Health in 2021. It took her more than a year to find a full-time job -- one not in her field -- and even then, she had to supplement her income by babysitting. "I felt like I was constantly working," she told AFP. "It seems overwhelming, looking at the costs, to try and make your salary stretch all the way to cover all the milestones you're supposed to reach in young adulthood." There is little hope on the immediate horizon, with analysts warning that it will likely take some time for the labor market to resolve itself, with part of that adjustment likely seeing students picking different majors. "It's likely to get worse before it gets better," said Martin. Looking at her peers, many of whom are saddled with huge debt and struggled to find work, Bremer says she worries for their collective long-term future. Getting up from the dining table with haste may be the key to managing one's blood sugar, a new study finds. People often experience glucose spikes after eating, particularly when consuming foods high in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice and grains. It's become a known health hack that going on a post-meal walk can help curb sugary spikes caused by such foods. But a study published on Scientific Reports on Wednesday took things even further. The researchers looked into the intricacies of the post-meal walk, particularly with how immediate one has to start walking to receive the most health benefits. The study analyzed a group of 12 people to compare the difference between going on a 10-minute walk right after glucose intake and going on a 30-minute walk a half hour after glucose intake. The findings showed that both methods significantly reduced average blood glucose levels compared to remaining at rest after a meal. However, the 10-minute walk was deemed to be "uniquely effective" at minimizing the peak glucose levels for each individual compared to the delayed 30-minute walk. Participants also rated the 10-minute walk as "significantly easier" than the longer one despite having to start the former with a fuller stomach. It doesn't take a scientist to figure out that last part. Getting a walk in earlier can yield even better results in terms of blood sugar maintenance than putting off a stroll just a little longer. The study suggests that not even tripling the walk duration would give you the same level of benefit. Researchers unveil world's first soft probe for non-destructive micro-LED testing

It took scientists just 0.9 megapascals of pressure to pierce a problem holding back the next wave of display technology. At Tianjin University, researchers have unveiled a groundbreaking method to test micro-LED wafers without causing damage, solving a challenge that has long stymied the high-end display industry. Micro-LEDs promise ultra-bright, energy-efficient screens for everything from high-end TVs to flexible wearables. Their superior brightness, contrast, and durability make them highly attractive for both consumer electronics and industrial applications. But for these advantages to translate into commercial success, manufacturers must achieve extremely high yields during wafer fabrication. Even the slightest defect in the tiny LED structures can compromise performance, drive up costs, and delay production timelines, making rigorous quality testing an essential part of the process. However, testing these delicate micro-LED wafers poses a serious engineering challenge. Traditional contact-based inspection methods often require probes to physically touch the wafer surface, which can easily scratch or damage the fragile structures. On the other hand, non-contact alternatives, such as optical testing or infrared imaging, frequently struggle with precision and tend to miss subtle defects. This creates a bottleneck in scaling up micro-LED production, where ensuring accuracy without compromising the wafer's integrity remains a difficult balance to strike. Now, a team of researchers led by Professor Huang Xian from the School of Precision Instrument and Opto-electronics Engineering, Tianjin University, has changed the game by developing a pioneering non-destructive testing technology for micro-LED wafers, offering a much-needed solution to a long-standing industry challenge. The team has developed a new soft-touch testing system that uses a flexible 3D probe array capable of adapting to the wafer's microscopic surface, while applying a pressure as low as 0.9 MPa, comparable to the softness of a gentle breath. 'The contact pressure exerted by our flexible probes is just one ten-thousandth that of conventional rigid probes,' Huang explained. 'This not only preserves the wafer surface but also significantly extends the probe's service life. Even after one million contact cycles, the probes retain their original condition.' To complement the soft-contact test, the research team also developed a custom measurement system that integrates with the flexible probes. Together, they enable high-throughput electrical testing crucial for ensuring wafer quality during the mass production of micro-LED. The breakthrough comes at a pivotal time. As companies race to bring micro-LED displays to market, the need for scalable, low-cost, and non-destructive testing solutions has never been greater. 'This breakthrough establishes a new foundation in the field,' said Huang. 'It closes a major technical gap in micro-LED electroluminescence testing and pays the way for broader applications in advanced wafer inspection and biophotonics.' Commercialization is already underway at the Tiankai Higher Education Innovation Park in Tianjin. If successful, the technology could supercharge the micro-LED industry and expand the reach of flexible electronics far beyond displays, into everything from sensors to medical devices. The study has been published in the journal Nature Electronics.
