Carlos Sainz Sr. Confirms He's Not Running To Lead Auto Racing Governing Body

Al Arabiya25-06-2025
Carlos Sainz Sr. has confirmed he won't run for the presidency of the FIA–the governing body for auto racing series like Formula 1.
The 63-year-old Sainz, the father of F1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr., announced Wednesday that his decision followed months spent trying to understand in depth the situation at the FIA, as well as the demands and complexities of the job. 'After a thoughtful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that the present circumstances are not ideal to set the grounds for my candidacy,' the two-time World Rally champion wrote in a statement on Instagram.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem currently has no opposition to his re-election bid ahead of December's vote. Ben Sulayem, elected to the post in 2021, has faced criticism over his management. In April, Robert Reid resigned as FIA deputy president for sport in protest at how the organization is run. Ben Sulayem has also been at odds with F1 drivers over his crackdown on swearing.

Michigan In Discussions To Kick Off 2026 Football Season In Germany

Michigan is having discussions about kicking off the 2026 football season against Western Michigan in Germany. The school announced Friday on social media that it is seeking to play at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on August 29, 2026. It would be the first game the Wolverines would play outside of North America. Athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement this would be a first-of-its-kind opportunity for the Wolverines and their fans. The University of Michigan is one of the few worldwide brands in college athletics and the interest in playing an international game would be unique, Manuel said. This would be a great opportunity to teach Go Blue to a new group of fans in Germany. Home to Eintracht Frankfurt of Bundesliga, the stadium features a retractable roof with a capacity of 55,000. Deutsche Bank Park has hosted five NFL games, including two regular-season games in 2023. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said they're always looking for unique opportunities for their players, noting the program has been to Italy, France, and South Africa over the past decade. The game would require a rescheduling of Michigan's home opener that's currently set for September 5. This game would provide another chance to grow our international fanbase, Moore said.

Swinney to raise Gaza crisis with Trump during landmark Scotland visit

LONDON: Scottish First Minister John Swinney has vowed to raise the 'unimaginable suffering' in Gaza when he meets Donald Trump during the US president's four-day visit to Scotland this weekend. Describing the trip as 'a landmark moment' in US-Scottish relations, Swinney said the visit provides a key platform for Scotland to express its views on pressing global issues. 'As we welcome the president of the United States, Scotland will be showcased on the world stage,' Swinney said. 'This provides Scotland with a platform to make its voice heard on the issues that matter, including war and peace, justice and democracy. 'As first minister, it is my responsibility to advance our interests, raise global and humanitarian issues of significant importance, including the unimaginable suffering we are witnessing in Gaza, and ensure Scotland's voice is heard at the highest levels of government across the world.' Trump said on Friday that he was 'looking forward' to meeting Swinney during the trip. Swinney is facing increasing pressure from within the Scottish National Party to adopt a strong stance on the Gaza conflict. On Wednesday, his predecessor and former First Minister Humza Yousaf and his wife Nadia El-Nakla, who has family in Gaza, issued a direct plea via social media. 'Millions in Gaza are being deliberately starved while Israel withholds food mere kilometres away. Words are not enough,' they wrote. 'Force Israel to open the borders and allow aid to flow in.' El-Nakla, who also convenes the SNP Friends of Palestine group, told The Times that the Trump meeting represented 'a critical opportunity to raise, directly and unequivocally, the ongoing genocide in Gaza.' She said: 'Time is not on the side of the people there. As I speak, my family — like millions of others — is starving. The first minister must demand that Trump use his influence to compel Israel to end the starvation and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.' While highlighting the humanitarian issues at stake, Swinney also noted the wider benefits of the visit in terms of showcasing Scotland's tourism and investment potential. He expressed confidence that planned protests would remain peaceful and respectful. He said he believed demonstrators would 'do Scotland proud' and act 'peacefully and lawfully.' Rallies are being organized by the Stop Trump Coalition in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, with others expected near Turnberry and Menie, where Trump owns resorts. Trump is expected to stay at Turnberry over the weekend before meeting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer there on Monday. He will then travel to Aberdeenshire to mark the opening of a new golf course named after his mother. Although the visit is private, a joint press conference with Trump and Starmer is expected. Police have warned that the scale of the operation could stretch resources, with the Scottish Police Federation stating it may double response times elsewhere.

‘Incredible': Ben Sulayem says F1's future has never looked more exciting

DUBAI: Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, believes the future of Formula 1 has never looked more exciting as the 2025 season heads for this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport With the current season delivering some of the best action seen in recent years, and with plenty more still to come, Ben Sulayem feels the arrival next year of a new team, a new venue and new regulations will reinforce the championship's global appeal. 'As we reach the mid-point of the 2025 calendar, we are already looking towards next season with a great deal of excitement and expectation,' the FIA president said in a press release. 'Our fans have plenty to look forward to, with Cadillac joining the grid as the 11th team, new FIA regulations to improve racing — bringing lighter, more agile cars and sustainable fuel — and the addition of Madrid as a new racing destination. 'The level of competition this year is incredible, with so much top-level talent on display,' he continued. 'And the impact of F1 is also supporting the FIA's goal to increase global participation in motorsport. Talented young drivers, whatever their background, have a real chance, and the next generation of stars is already coming through.' Ben Sulayem also addressed the possibility of a first F1 driver from the Middle East. 'Although the Middle East has yet to produce a Formula 1 driver, that may change as more young prospects emerge from a region eager to make a bigger impact in F1 and global motorsport,' he said. 'F1's popularity has seen remarkable growth across the Arab world, particularly among young people and female fans. In Saudi Arabia, there is a strong focus on engaging youth at every level of the sport — a trend mirrored in Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE,' he continued. 'This inclusive momentum is vital to ensure the long-term growth and sustainability of motorsport throughout the region.'
